I hadn’t seen Disney’s animated superhero movie Big Hero 6 until this past weekend. By pure coincidence, I ran across a LEGO version of protagonist Hiro Hamada’s workshop by Jonas just as I was watching the movie. While I could argue that the scene might be more lively with a Hiro minifig or a brick-built Baymax, the absence of characters doesn’t detract from the amazing detail Jonas has worked into the setting — especially those drawers built from 1×2 bricks and bucket handles.
The long-rumored 75827 Ghostbusters Firehouse Headquarters is finally unveiled this morning. Oddly, LEGO has chosen to release the first photographs of the set picturing it in front of the actual firehouse used in the film, instead of the usual polished press photos. There’s no accompanying press release as yet, but we do know the set will contain 4,634 pieces and nine minifigures: Peter Venkman, Raymond Stantz, Egon Spengler, Winston Zeddemore, Janine Melnitz, Dana Barrett, Louis Tully, Zombie Driver and the Library Ghost. It will also include Slimer and pink and blue ghosts. The set will be available for purchase in January for $349.99 USD.
Update: It is now listed on LEGO.com, though not yet available to purchase.

I was thinking when I blogged Chris McVeigh’s self-portrait the other day that it would be great if more builders took up that unique but flexible style of LEGO art. Paddy Bricksplitter accepted my unstated challenge and used nothing but LEGO in shades of black and white to build this wonderful portrait of Sir Charlie Chaplin, the wonderful Little Tramp from The Gold Rush (1923), Modern Times (1936), and one of my all-time favorite movies, The Great Dictator (1940).
As you probably know, today, the 21st of October 2015, is the day that the DeLorean Time Machine from the 1985 blockbuster Back To the Future travelled to.
Back in 1985, the makers of the movie imagined a rather cool-looking future in which we’d have flying cars, self-drying clothing, hovering skateboards and lots of fax machines, among other things. The hoverboard may be on its way, but fashion fortunately went in another direction and there are no flying cars either or at least none that work reliably. Instead we have smart-phones and social media.
We also have LEGO parts that I certainly couldn’t have imagined back in the eighties, as well as lots of different third-party accessories. Brian Williams (BMW Indy) has put some of these to very good use on his version of the Time Machine, with parts with a matte metal finish as well as lots of LED lighting and “glow” wire. He first posted pictures of this beauty a few months ago, but now seemed a particularly fitting day to bring it to your attention.
Movie-centric builder SPARKART! has put together a pretty thorough LEGO history of the Batmobile, from 1966 to the present day. The mandatory tumblers are in there of course. But being an old fart, my favorite has to be the original TV version! I like the scale chosen for these, and also the inclusion of matching figurines. (Hey LEGO company, *this* is what that exclusive Comic Con batmobile set should have looked like!)
This deceptively simple pile o’ figs is clearly a recreation of the Jerusalem scene from World War Z. But builder LEGO Will actually meant it as comment on shopping mania around the new Star Wars merch. However, I think it may become relevant again next week as LEGO fans clamor to pick up their WALL-E and Dimensions sets!
We might be looking at a new LEGO meme here, folks…

Ok there are probably a dozen directions the title of this post could have gone (let your imagination run wild). And there are probably a dozen ways builder Sad Brick (why so sad?) could have portrayed the brilliant gag of using Imperial Stormtrooper helmets as urinals in a Rebel Alliance base. But I’m glad he went for this very stylish – almost palatial – design.
Given the old joke that we never see people in science fiction going to the bathroom, I think this is the sort of thing that would work great as an easter egg in some future LEGO Star Wars video game!
The LEGO version of Pixar’s Tinny by Koen may just be one of the cutest one man bands ever. It doesn’t take many pieces to capture the adorable expression on the marching man’s face, giving it a simple evocativeness that’s straight out of the Pixar short which inspired it. My favorite detail is the ski used a nifty feather on the shako.
I’m not sure whether these remind me more of our wildly popular microfighter contest, or are meant to foreshadow LEGO’s much anticipated Dimensions product line (JUST ONE MORE WEEK FOLKS). But French builder Eric Druon has assembled this adorable armada of TV and movie inspired miniature road vehicles, in a strict 4-stud-wide format.
Eric has even made instructions available for anyone who wants to build their own copies. And for the record, this is actually *not* the most builds that we’ve ever featured in a single post – but it’s close!
It’s just over three months to the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and the new LEGO sets are hardly the only things generating excitement. Like many of us, Burglarhobbit has been poring over every new frame of footage that the Empire has been doling out to loyal Star Wars fans. The result is this fantastically detailed diorama depicting the making of The Force Awakens, complete with a prop and costume shop, green screen, and cockpit on a motion base.

From the builder: “I built this one for a mixed theme contest. Initially I wanted to use Jar Jar for the scarecrow (the only reason this build exists). But then I figured it would be out of place among Original Trilogy characters and replaced him with Han. The fun part is that this build was born from the idea of using Jar Jar as the brainless scarecrow and he didn’t even make the final cut; a fitting fate for such a wonderful character I suppose.”
