Contests and build challenges are often a great way to get creative juices flowing. Check out our coverage of new contests here, and congratulate the winners of contests that have finished.

This is the house that Alanboar built

This week Hong Kong hosted its gigantic annual fan convention Ani-Com, an event that makes San Diego Comic Con look like a book club meeting at a Starbucks. Local builder Alanboar Cheung was a finalist in the show’s LEGO building contest, with this delightful and very stylish “Dream House”:

This thing is packed to overflowing with awesome details – the closeups are definitely worth a look.

This event always produces some stellar MOCs, but information is a bit hard to come by. We’ll show you more of them as they come across our radars.

Announcing winners of the TBB Server Downtime Contest [News]

Back in March, we had a bit of a frustrating time here at The Brothers Brick, with several days of intermittent server downtime due to a software configuration issue. To have a little fun, I kicked off a brief contest. We got a number of great entries from TBB fans, which you can see in the photo pool on Flickr. Unfortunately, I became gravely ill just as the contest was ending, and I’ve been struggling to catch up ever since — focusing first on my day job (no, TBB is not actually my day job), and only then on LEGO and TBB.

With thanks to all our incredibly patient readers and contest participants (and yes, I do have a few words for the impatient and self-entitled after the jump), I’m pleased to finally share the winners of the contest categories.

TBB is Down Again!

As a techie, it was hard not to love these colorful, accurate server racks by Leopold Mao. The plumes of smoke, mice gnawing the cables, and distraught sysadmin, combined with the trans-clear bricks inside the servers, are all excellent touches. This is my pick for the top category. Congratulations, Leopold!

We hope our readers don’t encounter this iconic webpage error too often. Blake Foster wins this category with this simple but brilliant idea — a double-sided 1×2 plate! If only…

A Lemur Did It!

Our Lemur has gone AWOL recently, but he was a frenzy of activity back in March, and some of us suspect he may have had a little something to do with the downtime. Our winning entry in this category was drawn by Sayre Blake, who illustrated an amusing scene of A. Lemur eating mangoes & PBJ while swooshing a LEGO spaceship.

Guilty A. Lemur

We actually had a number of excellent entries in this category, so in addition to the three main prizes, I’d like to extend Honorable Mentions (with a small LEGO set as a prize) to “Server Error 223 – Hungry Lemur” by IamKritch and “A. Lemur is having some trouble pulling up TBB…” by Ashton6460.

Server Error 223 - Hungry Lemur A. Lemur is having some trouble pulling up TBB...

If you’re a winner, contact me on Flickr and I’ll get your contact information to send out your prize!

Yup, I have a rant. But I’ll spare most of you and save it for after the jump…

Announcing the BRICKNADO² contest winners!

By now, viewers on the “Feast Coast” are already chomping through the premiere of SyFy’s new action mystery sci-fi horror romantic comedy thriller cameo-tastic travesty SHARKNADO 3. And while those of you further West warm up your chainsaws, it’s time for us to spill the beans guts and reveal the winners of the Brothers Brick BRICKNADO² building contest.

You were all great sports Andrew Avila, The Capitan, Chelsea Collings, jwarner1718, DaDudeDownDaStreet, Liwnik, DarthDee, Krzysztof Pusz, W. Navarre, Laurie Swicegood, Daniel Fortine, and Obby and Steve Guiness. Thanks to everybody for playing! And finally thanks to Arthur Gugick for the use of his inspirational White House model in our contest poster.

Well there it is, our dumbest idea since the last one. And now it is over.

Let us never speak of this again…

BRICKNADO² contest ends soon!

Don’t be fooled by all this Pluto flyby nonsense – NASA is just trying to distract you from the fact that our BRICKNADO² building contest ends in one week! Hell yes, that’s just one week to craft your glorious LEGO tribute to the third (and hopefully silliest) installment of the Sharknado movie series.

Need inspiration? Then check out the Sharknado 3 trailer. Or pore over the entries from last year’s contest. Better still, pore over our prizes, each of which features at least one LEGO shark:

1st place: 60014 Coast Guard Patrol
2nd place: 60093 Deep Sea Helicopter
3rd place: 60092 Deep Sea Submarine

And that’s not all… Each winner will also receive a trophy in the form of a Sharnado pop vinyl:

You know what do to. So get to it. Don’t let NASA win this one…

Presenting BRICKNADO² : The hell we can!

It’s summer time, and that means there’s another goddam Sharknado movie round the corner. Last year’s BRICKNADO contest was heralded as our “dumbest idea ever” so we just had to do it again, this time to celebrate the impending release of Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No. Hec, we couldn’t even get our sequel numbers to line up with theirs, but we don’t care.

The 3rd movie is centered around Florida, Washington DC, and David Hasselhoff’s personality. We can’t wait to see how you exploit these iconic locations. But get cracking, because you’ve only got two weeks!

The Rules of BRICKNADO²

Build a LEGO model – the funnier and more outrageous the better. Then add one photo of your creation to the BRICKNADO² Flickr group. You are welcome to submit more than one creation, but The Brothers Brick reserve the right to SAW YOU IN HALF if you overdo it! No digital creations are allowed.

All entries must be submitted before July 20th. We will announce the results on the 22nd, right before the movie airs. Three lucky winners will receive a variety of shark-tastic prizes, that we’ll reveal next week.

These men of steel

Another exciting bout of the Iron Builder contest has just concluded over on Flickr. Brazilian builder Gilcelio Chagas and Indonesian builder Kosmas Santosa battled it out to see who could make best use of the chosen seed part: dark blue half domes. Kosmas ultimately triumphed, but both builders churned out some great MOCs during the month-long contest. Below is just a small sample, in no particular order. Can’t wait to see who they match up for the next round!

TBB cover photo: June 2015

This month’s winner of our informal TBB cover photo contest is this invigorating breakfast scene by Swedish builder LegoJalex. Yes, every single part of this scene (even the kitchen) is built from LEGO. And if you’re confused, that’s a popular brand of caviar paste on the toast. Just think of it as the Swedish equivalent of Vegemite!

In 2013, McLaren Automotive launched the groundbreaking McLaren P1™ to critical acclaim. The aerodynamic shape was penned by the renowned McLaren Automotive Design Director, Frank Stephenson, who explained that:

“Our main objective with the McLaren P1™ was to design the best drivers’ car in the world, on road and track. Managing airflow in and around the car’s bodywork and optimizing aerodynamics was key in achieving this goal. This design philosophy crafted the highly unique and emotive shape of the car”.

Spring is in the air… And this month’s winner of our informal TBB cover photo contest is this tranquil water lily scene by Indonesian builder Kosmas Santosa. Kosmas is a master of building everyday objects, so I recommend you check out his Flickr stream – it’s a real visual treat!

Clone on a Plate Contest Winners!

The Clone on a Plate Contest wrapped up with an astounding 124 entries! This one day flash contest kept everyone here on the edge of their seat to see what the creative LEGO geniuses out there would come up with! This isn’t our biggest contest ever, but if we extrapolated the number of entries over a typical contest length of a month this would have generated a whopping 3840 entries!

With so many entries we had a very hard time determining what would be worthy of the COAP Prize Pack. It was a tough for the contestants as they were given just one instruction: “Clone on a Plate”, with multiple interpretations:

From an artistic side, I think we all agreed VerSen‘s “Walk on the Water” entry was simply gorgeous:
Walk on the water

Equally artistic, with a very Shepard Fairey entry, we have Nick Royer (HJ Media Studios) with a cool rendered clone and some 3rd party weapons:
Clonus GOD OF WAR

Many went for the puns on clone and plate, with entries ranging from: clone (brand) on a (dinner) plate, clone on a (tectonic) plate), clone (sheep) on a plate, or clone (food/GMO) on a plate. There were others that did a fantastic job adding their own personal flair to their clones, and a few less flattering entries.

But the winner of the Prize pack was the entry that made us laugh the most. Despite the fairly obvious method of creating entries, Jonas (Legopard) provided the perfect dead pan entry of “Clone on a Plate WITH INSTRUCTION”:
TBB Clone on a Plate WITH INSTRUCTION
This made us laugh not once, not twice, but three times as Mr. Jonas proceeded to submit his entries to LEGO Ideas, and subsequently get rejected.

Congrats Jonas!

And on behalf of the TBB team, I do wish to apologize to LEGO Ideas for the extra work, though I assume that was definitely the highlight of their day, as it was ours.

TBB cover photo: April 2015

Well, we hoped you enjoyed our April Fool’s day pranks! But it’s time we chose the REAL cover photo for this month. And our pick for April is the Rod Dog by Lucius Sweet. This super-patriotic hot rod features three different representations of America’s national food substitute. I particularly dig the use of silver dog parts for the exhaust pipes.
