Thanos and the Infinity Gauntlet in LEGO

Tyler Halliwell is a guy who knows definitely knows his way around a bust! Renowned in the LEGO community for his amazing bust creations, Tyler’s latest character is Thanos together with the Infinity Gauntlet. Thanos is a Marvel Character who appeared in both The Thanos Quest and The Infinity Gauntlet series of Marvel Comics back in the 1990s. As a Marvel ‘baddie’, Thanos’ character has been depicted in the brick build featuring an evil grin and penetrating stare. Tyler used Lifelites (micro LEDs suitable for use with LEGO) to add a little more bling to the Infinity Gems.

Tintin’s LEGO rocket takes off from the moon!

This impressive rocket by Tyler Clites depicts Tintin’s rocket in Explorers on the Moon, the 17th volume of the famous comic series The Adventures of Tintin by Belgian cartoonist Hergé. The classic red and white chequered rocket is beautifully shaped with traditional slopes, wedges and curved slopes. The jet thrust gives rise to some fantastically simple but effective smoke, maintaining the original cartoon feel.

There is also a detailed interior allowing the construction of this LEGO creation to be admired. Tyler has used a mix of Technic and system parts to build the rocket, but you can see that the inner construction is not a hidden construction site but a functional part of the final build.

Fans of Tintin will also enjoy a previous build by Tyler of Tintin’s moon explorer vehicle from the same comic series. Tyler’s version of Tintin’s rocket is not the first time this vehicle has been featured here on TBB – Tintin’s Rocket by Gonkius was a previous, memorable version.

LEGO Superheroes Mighty Micros: 76063 The Flash vs. Captain Cold and 76065 Captain America vs. Red Skull [Review]

The March wave of LEGO sets brings us lots of new sets, including the new Elves Dragons and Speed Champions we’ve already reviewed. But it has a more cartoonish face too, by the name of Mighty Micros. This new line brings to LEGO Superheroes (of both Marvel and DC persuasion) the chibi-fied look that’s now familiar to LEGO Star Wars fans through the popular Star Wars Microfighters line. Today I’m taking a look at two of these new Superheroes sets, provided to us courtesy of LEGO. Both 76063 Mighty Micros: The Flash vs. Captain Cold and 76065 Mighty Micros: Captain America vs. Red Skull retails for $9.99 USD.

A post-apocalyptic mech with hints of Cherno Alpha

The focus here today is “Unit 573 Model No. 9” from chubbybots, which is delightfully stocky while still looking like a serious warmachine.

The builder says it is inspired by the Zombie Vs Robot Adventure comic book, and carries no weapons because it “pulverizes its enemies to death.” I mean, as far as battle strategies go, that’s a pretty good one.

As the title betrays, the main semi-circular pieces which form the core of the build remind me of the Cherno Alpha Jaeger from Pacific Rim, and little details like the holes in those pieces and the splashes of color really add a lot of character to this build. Listen, I’m not saying Pacific Rim is one of the most fun movies ever made because it has giant robots slapping around giant-er monsters with shipping containers because the world’s politicians apparently watched way too much anime—wait, that’s exactly what I’m saying.

Now I really want a worthy Kaiju to fight this mech.

Calvin and Hobbes – a LEGO Retrospective

Today, as many LEGO builders look back at their builds and accomplishments for the year, I’d like to go back a few more decades to December 31st 1995. The last published Calvin and Hobbes comic strip was published 20 years ago today, and I thought it would be appropriate to take a look back at Calvin and Hobbes through the eyes of the LEGO Community, and why we love them so much.

Calvin and Hobbes always held a very special place in my heart. It was the first English ‘book’ I ever actually wanted to read. But what surprises me is that – despite it being 20 years since the last printing – we still see LEGO builders from around the world regularly paying tribute to this wonderful comic strip. In fact, just over a month ago marked the 30th anniversary of the first Calvin and Hobbes comic strip, and I built a little scene to commemorate the occasion. I was quite shocked when I had someone message me to say “thank you” for reminding them of Calvin and Hobbes, and all the good memories.

Cosmik Roger and Xub

I always appreciate it when my interest in LEGO introduces me to something I’ve never heard of before. And that’s exactly what happened here with ledukeniko‘s recent character build. Please meet my new acquaintance, Cosmik Roger, the main character in a French comic book series that ran from 2002 to 2013. From what I can tell, with my limited knowledge of the French language, Roger travels space looking for booze, women, and a new home for the doomed human race.

Ledukeniko translated the incredible art style of the comic into a very pose-able and lovable-looking LEGO build. Roger’s signature messy hair and oversize nose looks fantastic! But ledukeniko didn’t stop with the main character. He also built, Xub, an alien bartender from the comics who apparently buys his clothes from the same stores as Han Solo. Full size Bionicle Iron Man helmet

As we all know, “Iron Man” isn’t actually made of iron, but rather gold-titanium alloy. Robert Downey Jr wouldn’t lie to us, would he? At any rate, definitely not made out of iron or any alloys (but still as impressive) is this new creation by nobu_tary. We’re not sure if this helmet would actually fit on a person’s head, but taking a guess from the size of certain pieces, it does look up to the task.

This will pair nicely with other Iron Man creations we’ve featured in the past, like a gauntlet or the famous arc reactor. Everyone keep up the good work, we’ll soon have an entire suit.

X-Men: Days of Bricks Past

Builder Tim Lydy has a long history of building comic book creations, specifically Batman, including winning the 75th Batman Anniversary Contest last year at BrickWorld. This year Tim decided to jump over to the Marvel side after watching last year’s movie and build the Mutants’ most terrifying foe, the Sentinel:

But fear not Mutants! The X-men are on the case to protect Mutants everywhere! Here we see Storm with a functional spinning tornado and lightning blasts.

There’s also Nightcrawler who is teleporting around the Sentinel:

And Tim also raised a good chunk of money at the Charity Auction and took home the Best Mecha Award for his amazingly articulated and lit Sentinel.

LEGO Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy

Sean and Steph Mayo just posted the most adorable Baby Groot (Sapling Groot?) ever. It was for a commission and I have to say that the new owner is very, very fortunate. I am Groot!

Comic Bricks at Designer Con

This weekend, STUDS (the collectible card series) hosted a LEGO art show at Designer Con in Los Angeles. The theme of the show was comic book covers, and builders were asked to build their own rendition of a cover of their own choice. From the photos in the gallery, I must say that the results were largely spectacular (they actually make me feel like my own contribution was insufficient).

I think my absolute favorite is this Captain Marvel cover by Zach Clapsdale (zachmoe), but I encourage you to take a look draw your own conclusions.

Calvin and Hobbes

Evan and our very own Simon have revisited their childhoods and created a beautiful homage to what is possibly the best comic strip of all time, Calvin and Hobbes.

Simon should have posted this himself but he’s too lazy. Feel free to tell him that in the comments.

Since very slightly before the dawn of the Internet, Scott Adams’ comic strip Dilbert has served as daily therapy for anyone trapped in the dysfunctional and illogical world of modern office life …but in particular, engineers in tech companies. And while it contains many in-jokes that only a bunch of worthless code monkeys would ever get, all of us can relate to the Pointy Haired Boss, the futility of PowerPoint presentations, or being punched into the middle of next week by an angry co-worker.

And now Cristiano Spiller has decided to continue his Cubedude renaissance with this comprehensive tribute to Dilbert, featuring all of your favorite heroes and anti-heroes:

It’s actually alarming how well they translate to LEGO! Cristiano has also recreated some memorable secondary characters, such as the Elbonians and Loud Howard, and topped off the collection with a very snappy interpretation of the Dilbert logo:

It’s enough to make me want to form a proactive synergy restructuring team to change the six-sigma paradigm! Nya, I’ll get some intern to do it…
