Bender: Bite my shiny LEGO ass.

Good news everyone!
Adrian Drake (BrickFrenzy) is back with another MEGA awesome build for Brickworld this year. This time, it’s a life-sized Bender from Futurama:

At 6 feet tall (including antenna) and built with approximately 20,000 pieces – it may surprise you that this build only took about Adrian a month to build. I think this was the single most photographed build at Brickworld, and earned Adrian the Judge’s Choice Award and nomination for Best Mega Creation.

Of course no life sized bender would be complete without a functional chest cavity (featuring one of Brickworld’s finest traditional drinks).

As a huge Futurama fan, I couldn’t help but get caught up in life-sized-Bender Fever, and decided to build Nixon’s head (minus jar) to put on Bender’s body (ARROOOOO!).

Oh and Adrian totally trusted me enough to let me put on Bender’s Head.

A special thanks to Adam Myers for letting me build Nixon from his collection in Chicago, and for loaning out Nixon head to Adrian to display at BrickFair VA.

Julius von Brunk (Baron von Brunk) is such a massive console gaming fan, he decided that the last thing he should see at night should be the Spiritual Stones from Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time. So he built this working lamp containing a transparent mosaic of each stone, all harmoniously capped off by a Triforce…

The future of warfare is olive green and gory

It’s a good week for small mecha, as hot on the heels of the previous gundams we have a double fistful of pintsize brawlers.

In the green corner we have the Triple-M by Devid, coming at you like a mullet, all lethal armor in the front and human burrito in the back.

And in the teal corner is the Mech with No Name from Guy Smiley, warming up for the match with a fleshie punching bag.

Chibi Gundam

If you enjoyed the sweet Gundam by Micah Berkoff (Arkov.) yesterday, prepare for its adorable little brother, the Chibi Gundam by Patrick Biggs. Both employ similar techniques, so the scale difference makes them fun to look at side-by-side.

Lighthouse of Barqa

Set in the collaborative fantasy LEGO world of Guilds of Historica, this ancient lighthouse with middle-eastern features was created by Gideon_83. I like the inclusion of fire and smoke in this build, which is further enhanced by the use of lighting bricks. It looked very nice at Brickworld last week during the traditional “Festival of Lights”!

A different approach to Modular Housing

There are many, many things that make me exceedingly happy about this creation. The color use. The stunning architecture. The lovely painting that inspired it. The full interior. The fact that Sebastiaan Arts (Aliencat) has posted something magnificent, after a lengthy hiatus.

Also, the fantastical creature doing terrible things on the first floor. That’s definitely a plus. Watch it in motion.

Bionicle Gundam

This Bionicle Gundam by Micah Berkoff (Arkov.) has all the right proportions, color blocking, and a sickly slick scythe.

Dust Bunnies

While clearly inspired by Japanese Anime, RWBY (an American animated series from the Rooster Teeth stables) could never be mistaken as a product of that genre. But that hasn’t stopped Anime building master Mike Dung from adapting his signature style to depict Ruby, Weiss, Blake and Yang in full 3D….

I’ll admit that my first reaction upon seeing the show was “Anime-skinned Red vs Blue”. Which is not surprising since it’s made by the same team that gave us Red vs Blue. But its snappy dialogue, rock soundtrack, great fight choreography, and short episodes seem to be winning combination within the RT community.

Personally, I’d love to see Mike break from his trend of only building female characters, and perhaps try his hand at some of the guys from this show as well, like Roman or Junior!

USS Enterprise NX-01 – Star Trek as it should have been

What better way to break my blogging dry streak than with this fantastic alternate take on the iconic USS Enterprise from Star Trek (The Original Series) by Shannon Sproule. Shannon’s version looks a lot more realistic than the version in the actual TV show, even by 1960’s space program standards.

At first, I actually thought this might be a Soviet Enterprise, which would be very cool to see as well! Get building, someone!

Beaufort bomber from down under

It’s not very often that I come across an aircraft that I know very little about, but
Nikos Andronikos (dodgeyhack) has managed to befuddle me, by building a Australian Beaufort bomber. I know the Beaufort as a British WW2 aircraft that served with the Royal Air Force. What I did not know, however, is that Beauforts also served with the Royal Australian Air Force and were actually license-built down under in significant numbers.

So, the subject of the model is interesting in my book. Beyond that, the model is very nicely done. I like how the wings are angled back, to give their leading edges the proper angle. The camouflage works, which is no mean feat using dark green, and it has goodies such as a retractable undercarriage and an opening weapons bay. To add the proverbial cherry on top of his cake, Nikos has also made a render of the model that shows how some of the major bits go together.

E.T. phone home

Love him or hate him, you gotta admit Steven Spielberg has had his moments, and the classic movie E.T. the Extraterrestrial was definitely one of them. Despite how crazy the alien in this movie looked, there pretty much wasn’t a dry eye in the house when [32 YEAR LATE SPOILER ALERT] he died. I still remember the little girl in the seat next to me balling her head off, and teenage me trying very hard to keep it together! And a killer soundtrack by John Williams? Oh, too much… This build by Jimmy Fortel brings that super slice of Eighties-ness flooding right back:

Just remember, don’t get him wet, and don’t feed him after midnight ;-)

Mini Mini Cooper

It’s been barely a week since LEGO’s announcement about the new Mini Cooper creator set. Inspired by the pictures of that set, Miro Dudas built a mini-fig scaled version:

I haven’t decided yet whether this super little build is going to temporarily satisfy my craving for the real set, or just make waiting until August even that more hard to do!
