About Caylin

A life-long LEGO fan, Caylin returned to the hobby as an adult in 2003, after her mother bought her a basic creator tub as a joke. Her mother regrets this. She regularly attends BrickCon in Seattle, Washington, where she goes by the title of Prize Goddess. You can check out her flickr account here.

I am not a robot.

Gamabomb brings us this friendly AI robot, named Cailín. Not to be confused with Caylin, the author of this post, who is quite insistent that this is not a portrait. The robot Cailín is tall, slender, and looks to be a distant relative of No-Face from Spirited Away. The human Caylin is not tall, and as far as I am aware, not related to any spirits.

In all seriousness, Cailín is just lovely. The robot is delicate, but still seems to have enough power to rip one’s head off should you become a threat. Such an excellent combination!

AI Bot Cailín

If Cailín does not suit your robot needs, then I invite you to take a look at the Hillmaster Exoskeleton. This exoskeleton features an ADORABLE pilot in the Operatorsuit.

Amazingly detailed 1966 Batman’s Wayne Manor in LEGO

Holy bananas, Batman! monstrophonic has posted this absolutely stunning, detailed, 1966 Wayne Manor. The facade is just gorgeous, with the mottling and detail work. The landscaping is foreboding, with that sweeping angle up to the front of the house.

Wayne's Manor 1966

But wait, there’s more!

Turn it around to reveal an incredibly detailed interior, including what appears to be an awesome upgrade of the official Classic Batcave set. There are bats in the attic, teddy bears by the luxurious bed, and visitors in the formal living room. While there doesn’t appear to be a fire pole or quick means to the batcave, there’s a lovely hidden staircase to sneak around with!

'66 Batcave

Let’s discuss this batcave. It’s lit, and contains the classic batmobile (which you can find for yourself in 76052 LEGO Batman TV Series Batcave), along with another surprise guest scientist and innovator to help Batman figure out how to make the batmobile and batcopter even better.

Moon exploration with a LEGO Apollo 15

In 1971, the lunar rover was delivered to the moon as part of the Apollo 15 mission, and used on all subsequent missions. As I have a fond appreciation for “real” space ships, I am delighted to share with you Luis Peña‘s absolutely beautiful lunar lander module, Apollo capsule, and the ever-adorable and oh so fun lunar rover.

Apollo Program

The Apollo capsule is instantly recognizable. The curves convey the shape wonderfully, and I love the properly cramped interior that Luis is able to show. The rover’s colors are so vibrant!

And if you like LEGO Apollo models, remember that LEGO is currently working on an Apollo 11 set, so you’ll be able to buy your own in the near future.

Elemental Ice Dragon

With the heat rising everywhere, it’s time to bring in some ice. Some beautiful, well designed, sleek, dragon ice. Cecilie Fritzvold has brought us this lovely beast. I like the trans-blue highlights. The bone-like ridges add great texture to the dragon’s body, making it look particularly dangerous.

LEGO Creator 10253 Big Ben [Review]

The clock tower of the British Houses of Parliament is an English icon known the world over. Oddly enough, the famously named Big Ben is actually the largest of the 5 bells housed within the tower, with the clock tower being properly called the Elizabeth Tower. However, over the last 157 years since the tower’s completion, it’s become globally known as Big Ben. And now it has inspired LEGO’s second largest architecture set ever, 10253 Big Ben, with 4,163 pieces. The set is currently available to LEGO VIP members, and will go on sale to everyone beginning July 1 for $249.99.

In Memorium: Daniel August Krentz (1937-2016) [News]

The LEGO community lost a great man this past week. Daniel August Krentz (1937-2016) was a retired set designer for LEGO, and his contributions and impact to our community are vast and deep.

Daniel began building with LEGO in college, in the 1960s. Soon, his creations gained the attention of the right people and he found himself recruited as a designer, moving from Chicago, IL to Billund, Denmark. Daniel was the first Adult Fan of LEGO to be hired as a designer for LEGO. He began designing in the 1970s, continuing until 1999.

Daniel 1

Even if you’ve never heard his name, you know his work. You’ve played with the sets Daniel designed, as his work likely helped form your LEGO childhood. While the list of sets he designed is extensive, below are a few of the more nostalgic sets he designed:

  • 375 Classic Yellow Castle
  • 6067 Guarded Inn
  • 6074 Black Falcons Fortress
  • 6078 Royal Drawbridge
  • 6081 Kings Mountain Fortress
  • 6267 Lagoon Lock Up
  • 6276 Eldorado Fortress

Last year, Bricks Culture interviewed Daniel. The author, Are J. Heiseldal, has kindly posted the interview online for others to read. I encourage you to take the time to read the article and reflect on Daniel Krentz’s impact on our community.

Thank you, Daniel, for all of the wonderful memories.

LEGO ribbon memorializes Orlando shooting victims

On Sunday, June 12, an armed individual walked into Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida, and opened fire. When the attack was over, 49 people had lost their lives with another 53 injured. There are many things that make this tragedy terrible: the loss of life; the fact the nightclub was meant to be a safe place for the LGBT+ community; and the clear preparation the shooter took prior to walking into the club that night. Many questions remain unanswered about the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.

As the days pass, we’ll see many conversations surrounding this, but today, I encourage you to take a moment of silence for the 49 young people who never went home that night.

Ryan Howerter has built a ribbon of mourning. It is simple and profound. It is a memorial to the lives lost.

A place downtown to meet your Friends

I love seeing Friends colors and sets incorporated into awesome builds, and Allan Corbeil has done a magnificent job with that. He’s given us a lovely Cafe Corner modular building, based on 41035 Heartlake Juice Bar.

Black and White photo of my Lego Modular Building MOC

While I love the black and white old-timey pictures, I have to share the stand-alone shot, too. The Juice Bar looks just lovely built into the ground floor of this brick building. The detail for the top floor is quite lovely and very reminiscent of the details that LEGO puts into other modular sets, particularly 10243 Parisian Restaurant and 10251 Brick Bank.

Love through music featuring Mickey and Minnie

Feelings can often be difficult to share, but thankfully, music can do it for us. The perfect song can tell someone everything you want to say but don’t know how. It can take us back instantly to points in our life, reminding us of those we love. James Zhan has built this wonderful gramophone, with beautiful gilded details. Atop the record is Minnie, with Mickey playing the record.

To me, it tells me the song reminds him of her, and there’s something very sweet in that message.

Talk Of Love Through Music

The record spins, too!

Amazing LEGO Stop-motion Ghostbusters [Video]

Paul Hollingsworth and the fine folks at Digital Wizards have done it again, bringing us a stop-motion LEGO version of Ghostbusters. This 4:30 minute brickfilm is a labor of love, requiring over 2,000 hours of time for animation, building, lighting, compositing and composing the final product! The opening shot alone, according to the animators, took 12 hours to set up and 6 hours to animate.

All of your favorites make cameos to help the fabulous four battle the terrible (and terribly adorable!) Stay Puft Marshmallow man!

Enjoy!
