The Games of the XXIV Olympiad were hosted in Seoul, South Korea from 17 September to 2 October back in 1988 and the principle stadium has been recreated in microscale by Yo-Sub Joo (ysomt). 8,391 athletes from 160 nations participated in the games and in case you’re wondering how the home team fared; South Korea took home a total of 33 medals including 12 gold!
Korean fan Myungpyo Kim brings us this awesome Landrover, ready to race in the World Rally Championship and emblazoned with the logo of what everyone knows is the coolest energy company in the world, Octan.
Builder Mark Clark let us know via Facebook that he recently displayed his model of National Historic Landmark Cincinnati Music Hall in the venue itself to the delight of its many visitors. The model was constructed to appear as it existed in 1896, in 1/50th scale, with an interior that includes the acoustically acclaimed Springer Auditorium and Corbett tower.
Like many builders who attempt a project of this scale, Mark indicated on one of his photos that it wouldn’t have been possible without the support of his family. Kudos Mark, for a an accurate tribute to a fascinating structure.
This video reminds me of a T.V. commercial from a big pharmaceutical company hawking its latest antidepressant medication. Maybe that’s fitting, considering how many fans build to relieve stress and in some cases to help fight depression. I’m not sure which cure is cheaper, but I know which one has fewer side effects. According to the builder, Denmark’s Anne Mette Vestergård (Anne Mette V), “Sometimes the everyday life seems to be sad and grey like in this town. But not for the AFOLs who lives there. Making LEGO Creations is his bright spot in his everyday life.. The build is not photographed in black and white, nor is it digitally manipulated but rather built with gray-scale parts, much like a portion of the recent Wizard of Oz diorama featured on this blog of blogs.
The music is a perfect match for the video, although it does make me want a Friday night martini, which shouldn’t be too hard to find in Vegas. Welcome to the weekend.
I see a lot of rockets and spaceships, and a lot of bases and landing pads, but I don’t see cool scenes of things using controlled explosions to escape gravity nearly often enough, and I’m guessing you don’t either. LukeClarenceVan‘s diorama satisfies admirably with what must surely be the most picturesque launchpad in the world. I’m not sure what the backstory is here, but I’m guessing this is the hidden lair of Bond villain.
I don’t have much information yet on the Korean fan-event recently hosted in Seoul, but there are some stunning photos available on Flickr from Brickmaster_Kor. We will begin our brief sampling with “The Mini SEOUL Project“, the model that first caught my eye with its micro-river, unique focus and lack of non-LEGO clutter in the background.
Then we move on to Seoul Station, proving that Korea’s KORAIL-inspired Train-heads are in the game.
And finally a shot of the magnificent statues that mark the entrance to Kyungbok-gung palace.
It is also worth noting that there were a great many Stormtroopers and Imperial Guard present as well. It looks like the exhibition was a great event, be sure and click through the entire set to soak in all the details of this extensive layout. Congratulations to everyone involved!

For her local community window, Melanie F. built this delightful rendition of the house from Pixar’s beloved Up, in partnership with fellow fans CleverLittleMinx and ROOK.

Inspired by the collected works of Spencer Rezkalla, TBB newcomer Rocco Buttliere has slowly amassed a fine collection of microscale skyscrapers with a focus on the architecture of Chicago Illinois. For his latest project, Rocco takes on the 961 ft tower at 311 South Wacker in downtown Chicago. According the the builder, “311 was the tallest reinforced concrete building in the world at the time of its completion. It is the seventh tallest building in Chicago, and sixteenth in the US. It is also the tallest building in the world whose address is also its formal title.” Considering the limited availability of Medium Dark Flesh colored elements, the building seems all the more impressive. As part of an event in Ballabio, North of Milan, the Italian LEGO users group ItLUG held a Creator contest, which was won by Dario Minisini (oirad72) with this lovely cottage.
I’m not sure whether the combination of the shape, the red roof-tiles and the white walls triggered it, but when I saw this picture I was immediately reminded of Italy, even before I knew the back-story. Like many Creator sets, its construction may be relatively straightforward, but the colours, the proportions and level of detail make it work.
It is time to beat the heat, constant reader because the stupid sun has had it too good for too long. Inspired by a good friend who runs a dive-center in Thailand, TBB regular Alex Jones (Orion Pax) takes to the high seas with his latest build the Sunreef 100 TDS. The boat looks like something you’d see in a rap video, with scantily clad babes cavorting with gold-chain wearing shot-callers. Alex gives you unprecedented insider access to his build process with an extensive work-in-progress photos and commentary and it’s all available on his website Orion Pax Blog.
