A narrow miss with this LEGO Mandalorian vs Krayt Dragon

One of the main appeals of Star Wars is its homage to classic genres like serialised westerns, samurai movies, and Arthurian legends. The Mandalorian presents that very well, with the titular character being a rugged gunslinger with a heart of gold helping various people in each episode. Thomas Jenkins captures one instance during one of his visits to Tatooine where he helps defeat a massive Krayt Dragon. Presented in a simple way: the Dragon bursting out of the sand, and the Mandalorian escaping its jaws.

The Krayt Dragon is complex in its angles and techniques, but captures the organic shape of a reptilian head. The floating sand and rubble is a nice addition and conveys a sense of motion from the rising beast. But the way Thomas got the Mandalorian to float is just ingenious. Using skeleton and droid arms to create columns of smoke from the minifig that is firmly attached to the rest of the build. Just like that, these few elements capture a simple moment. In a way, it is quite minimalistic, with very little need for anything else.

Boba Fett’s New Chapter

Depending on your point of view, there is something strange about seeing Boba Fett on a throne. The royalty position is a rare sight for the bounty hunter, who firmly declared that he is a simple man, like his father, Jango Fett. Well, let this image marinate until we learn more about his occupation of Jabba the Hutt’s palace.

Robert Maier makes a statement through the build’s title “Hail to the King.” The skiff guard (from 2017’s Desert Skiff Escape set) learns the hard way after encountering Boba Fett and the sharp-shooting assassin, Fennec Shand. Overall, the arched molding around the palace is an impressive display of symmetry. The base of the platform is lined with reddish brown Modified 1 x 1 Rounded with Bar Handle plates. They symbolize the head sculptures on Jabba’s throne. Ahem, we mean Boba Fett’s throne. There’s a new king in town. Check out Robert’s previous build here.

LEGO Star Wars 75299 Trouble on Tatooine from Disney’s The Mandalorian [Review]

The second season of The Mandalorian just wrapped up a couple weeks ago on Disney+, and LEGO continues to drip-feed LEGO Star Wars sets based on scenes from the show. Hitting stores on January 1st, 2021, 75299 Trouble on Tatooine provides a fairly low-cost (US $29.99 | CAN $39.99 | UK £27.99), spoiler-free way to pick up Mando and the Child in minifig form, with a few key pieces of equipment and scenery from season 2.

The Coveted Mythosaur Skull Pendant

We all saw the child sporting a very fashionable Mythosaur skull necklace in season one of The Mandalorian (no season two spoilers here). If you can’t find one of these beauties online why not build one for yourself like Luis Peña García has out of LEGO elements?

Peña crafts his LEGO version of the pendant using a menagerie of light grey elements, small black plates in various sizes, and a couple pieces in flat silver. In order to give the skull form, Peña mainly utilizes the light grey slopes and tiles in various shapes and sizes while the black plates that the grey pieces are assembled on serve as the negative space creating eye and nose sockets. Peña most cleverly uses a few binocular pieces in grey for the teeth of the fictional creature. Overall this build is spot on in its depiction of the Mythosaur skull pendant, wear one of these babies and the Mandalorians will know that you are legit!

The Child is all we want for Christmas, really

Disney+ has done a phenomenal thing with Star Wars: The Mandalorian. They’ve satisfied seasoned fans while also bringing in younger viewers, a feat that the newest Skywalker saga movies struggled with. The driving force uniting viewers both young and old is sometimes called by the chronologically inaccurate moniker of “Baby Yoda”, though some go with “The Child”, and others go by his newly revealed and more spoiler-y name. Whatever you call him, Pascal Hetzel gives us what we’re all after with his latest LEGO creation. He’s taken the official set, 75318 The Child, and given it a Santa outfit. Add a festively ornamented Christmas tree with presents and you pretty much have the formula for success right there! From all of us at The Brothers Brick, here’s hoping your holiday season is as happy and bright as this little guy here.

The latest cool new Star Wars ship to fly right into our hearts is the iconic Razor Crest from the Disney+ series The Mandalorian. Here, this model by Boba-1980 has to be the smallest version I’ve seen so far (I know there was a smaller version in this year’s Star Wars advent calendar, but in my opinion, that one is pretty sad) Capturing the right details at this size is no easy task, but the Force is strong with Boba-1980. From the large engines to the extended landing gear, this model has it all. I liked the use of ice skates for the landing gear.

By this point, I’m pretty sure everyone and their mother has watched The Mandalorian (except my own mother, who only watches PBS). It’s a popular show, and for a good reason: it takes the western-cowboy movie vibes of A New Hope and runs with it, letting us see a grittier side of everybody’s favorite space fairy tale kingdom. It’s got a cute little Yoda-species kid, a more fleshed-out version of the mysterious Mandalorian Boba Fett, and plenty of epic gunfights. As a result, the spaceship that hauls around Mando (a.k.a. Din Djarin), the Razor Crest, has become almost as recognizable as the TIE Fighter or the X-Wing. And just like those venerable ships, the Razor Crest has received the epic treatment from Jarek Książczyk (Jerac), a master Star Wars LEGO builder.

2020 LEGO Advent Calendars, Day 5

Happy holidays to all of our fellow LEGO builders! As is tradition, we at The Brothers Brick will be opening our advent calendars as we count down to Christmas. We’ll also be sharing commentary on each one, which will be both insightful and hilarious!

This year we have new Harry Potter, Star Wars, City and Friends advent calendars to open. We will be sharing images of the new calendars every day through Christmas. Let’s see what there is to open on Day 5!

Maybe a Jedi, but not a mechanic

Season two of the Disney+ streaming series The Mandalorian presses on, and in episode four, a very toasted Razor Crest starship makes its way through space as Din Djarin continues on in his quest to reunite the child with his kind. Mihal builds a humorous scene out of LEGO from this episode of the child who is small enough to fit into some crevices and able to get to some electronics necessary for repair, unfortunately, this type of work may not be the child’s calling.

The build for the child here actually looks like a miniature version of the buildable child with his legs and torso being largely brick-built; it looks like many small plates and tiles in tan were utilized for this portion. The child’s head consists of slopes and bricks in sand green, his eyes being the same ones used in the dewback build from the 2019 Escape Pod vs. Dewback micro-fighters set. This built scene is not only expertly executed but also makes great use of wire-like elements and other small pieces like the lightsaber hilts. As always, I cannot wait to see more builds inspired by the show.
