Long before LEGO released Marvel and DC Universe Superheroes sets, LEGO fans were building their own Batmobiles and Batcaves, custom Avengers and X-men. Whether you’re looking for news about the official sets or want to check out some really great custom LEGO models inspired by the world of comic books, you’ve come to the right place.

Sugar and spice and all things nice and LEGO

Check out the power of the Powerpuff Girls in this cracking setup from Seattle area builder Michael Kuroda. Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup have never looked so good. Bright bold colors, immediately recognisable characters, and a sense of motion and speed. It’s like a still snatched from the opening titles of the cartoon — excellent stuff.

Superheroes settle their differences with a game of H.O.R.S.‌‌E

Sure, the Dark Knight and the Man of Steel nearly leveled the Kent family barn, but Supe’s mom Martha stepped between them with her trusty rolling pin and put an end to the destruction. Now, these two superheroes are settling their differences like men. Builder Thorsten Bonsch said he wanted to create a lighthearted scene. He achieved that and more! In addition to the playful atmosphere, this scene packs some incredible details. I love the heat vision damage on the corner of the barn, the wheat field, and the terrific texture on the sidings. Check out close-up photos of this build on Flickr.

The greatest gladiator match in the history of the world

God versus man. Day versus night. Son of Krypton versus Bat of Gotham! Despite terrible critic reviews, I enjoyed Batman v. Superman and thought there were some excellent scenes. And it seems builder Nathaniel shares my opinion. He must have appreciated the scene where Batman evades a heat vision blast using his trusty grappling hook because he has rendered it into LEGO beautifully.

Batman vs Superman

Nathaniel’s harsh shadows and bold color choices masterfully evoke comic book art style. That heat vision explosion is fantastic! We’ve featured such “special effects” on The Brothers Brick before, but never one caused by a Kryptonian. Though this scene is not technically accurate (I’m not going to spoil the movie for those of you who haven’t seen it yet by pointing out the inaccuracy), it’s clear that Nathaniel decided to build what most people wanted (and expected) to see in the film. *Wink*

Batman fan spent two months building ultimate Batcave; impresses all

Considering the popularity of the dark knight and his prevalence throughout Lego sets, movies, and games, Batman is constantly being depicted in fan creations–as is his ever changing Batcave. From Lego’s own 60’s cave, to vintage versions, and to some consisting of 20,000 pieces, each Batcave is designed to be uniquely different but equally evocative of the Bat’s style. Dan Glasure was aware of these differing takes, and incorporated design styles from other caves and incarnations to build his own striking Batcave, one that took two months to complete – but was clearly well worth the effort.

Kamen Rider Black brings back 80’s Japanese nostalgia

As my family left Japan in 1989 after 15 years there, one of the memories I carried with me was all the TV shows my brother and I had watched. While my own favorite was Ultraman, my brother preferred Kamen Rider (the “Masked Rider”). One of the best and most popular incarnations of the titular hero was the Kamen Rider Black series, which aired just before we left Japan, in 1987 and 1988.

Moko has been building various LEGO versions of Kamen Rider for at least the last 10 years — I first featured minifig versions of the characters way back in 2006 — and his latest Kamen Rider features a chibi version of our hero pulling a wheelie astride his iconic “Battlehopper” motorcycle.

Kamen Rider Black

Kamen Rider himself is fully posable, and Moko says that this is his first attempt at a non-minifig scale motorbike. Moko makes great use of LEGO rubber elements in this build: The red and yellow lines on the character are built from rubber bands, and the motorcycle tires are tank treads on radar dishes.

Kamen Rider Black

Moko says that the first Kamen Rider show he watched was the RX series that immediately followed Black, and he only watched Black later, but really loves the show despite its age — which, you know, makes me feel a bit old… You can see more photos on Moko’s blog (in Japanese).

It’s the Bat!

Although Batman is best known for tangling with cats, solving riddles, and punching clowns–that’s really just his “special” workdays. Most nights he’s terrifying more common everyday criminals and ensuring they have long painful hospital stays. Builder Roman (th_squirrel) depicts a normal day at the bat-office, showing the moment where everything goes wrong for two unlucky criminals. One expresses understandable fear, the other displays a foolish “we can take him” confidence. A dramatic one-sided fight is about to begin.

A new take on Batman’s vintage batcave

While LEGO have just released the official 76052 Classic TV Series Batcave, Marcin Guzicki has  his own take on a vintage-style batcave. Marcin’s batcave has a well-supplied equipment area with batarangs and a great retro “recording device”. The clever use of sloped dark bluish grey LEGO parts gives the impression of an underground cave within a beautifully compact diorama.

batcave- vintage style

An equally vintage Batmobile at the other end of the sloped walkway means that Batman just needs to run uphill into action.
