Finnish builder Eero Okkonen belongs in the pantheon of great builders. His innovative models mix System, Bionicle, and Constraction parts in mind-bending ways to create expressive characters, whether from beloved books and games or fully sprung from Eero’s imagination. Eero’s work has been showcased in the LEGO House Masterpiece Gallery, and he’s been a regular contributor to New Elementary, putting new parts through their paces and giving an AFOL perspective on new sets. Eero has been documenting his builds on the Cyclopic Bricks blog since 2012, allowing his journey as a builder to inspire countless others.

Giant LEGO Samus Aran is here for all your Metroid fighting needs

Back in December 2013, Finnish builder Eero Okkonen wowed us with a Bionicle / Technic build of Samus Aran in her Zero Suit. Almost three years later and he’s at it again, this time with the famous heroine in her Power Suit.

This huge build (this time built with regular bricks) is a sight to behold. Thanks to the large size, the builder really got to do some impressive shaping, especially nailing the spherical pauldron. The colour choices too are superb, with the azure blue Arm Cannon being both a literal and figurative highlight.

Discworld’s Lu-Tze brought to life in LEGO

Eero Okkonen (Pate-Keetongu) continues his series of LEGO characters from Terry Pratchett’s Discworld. This time round we’ve got an awesome rendition of Lu-Tze the fighting monk. Check out all the fabulous details in this model — the moustache and beard, the knot on the belt, the use of a snake as cigarette smoke, and the split-toe sandals. This is character-building at its absolute finest.

I don’t want to be captain – I can’t do the thinking!

Finnish builder Eero Okkonen does it again with this latest addition to his collection of Discworld characters. With donut in hand, Sergeant Colon looks like the Roman equivalent of a modern American cop (famous for their infinite love for this kind of pastry). Chain mail armor and caligae boots are perfectly captured in such a small scale, and those chubby cheeks look fantastic! Corporal Nobbs on the other hand is instantly recognizable with his big nose and cigarette. Despite the smaller scale, Eero’s attention to detail results in another two magnificent micro-sculptures.

The color of magic: Terry Pratchett’s Discworld characters in LEGO

It’s time to travel to Discworld and enjoy this fantastic series of characters from the works of Sir Terry Pratchett, brought to us by Eero Okkonen (Pate-keetongu). Eero started these shortly after the death of Pratchett in March this year. His first build was a large-scale creation of his favourite Discworld character, Archchancellor Mustrum Ridcully (back-row, far left in the photo below).

If you’re not familiar with Terry Pratchett, he was the author of a series of 41 comic fantasy books that take place in the Discworld, a flat circular world that rests on the backs of four elephants who are standing on the back of a turtle.

I simply must point out a few of my favourite parts, although it is hard to narrow this down to only my top three. In no particular order: the Archchancellor’s ‘winged’ beard; bananas used to represent the peeled banana skin held by the Librarian; and the dark red windscreen used as the Luggage’s tongue! Well one more… look below, Commander Vimes toes are minifigure legs!

The axe man cometh

Even in the Bionicle universe people need to rock out once in a while. So meet Bio-Klaanian rock star Toa Kyberi, Toa of Sonic! This bad-ass was created by Finnish builder and master of the LEGO System/Bionicle mashup, Eero Okkonen. Read about this character’s full backstory on Eero’s blog.

Alina the Steampunk

Eero Okkonen (Pate-keetongu) built her and she is something special. We’ve seen quite a few wonderful figures similar to this one but the face puts her over the top. I have to say that the use of ‘batarangs’ was truly inspired!

Friday Night Fights – Bionicle Brutes

Welcome back fight fans, to Sin City Nevada for another round of Friday Night Fights. Tonight we take a break from System and dive into the wonder world of Bionicle. Let’s go to the tale of the tape.

Zero Suit Samus in LEGO

We’re Dwarves, We Are: Bifur, Bofur, and Bombur

The ever-talented Eero Okkonen (Pate-keetongu) brings us three of the most memorable dwarves you’re ever likely to meet: Bifor, Bofur, and Bombur from The Hobbit. I’m always impressed by how well skilled builders are able to imbue expressions on the faces of large scale characters using only a few bricks. You can read a bit more about them on Eero’s own blog. Eero says he’s building the whole party of 15 adventurers, which I can’t wait to see.

Watchmen’s Comedian in LEGO

Eero Okkonen (Pate-keetongu) has masterfully created Edward Blake, aka the manic Comedian from Allan Moore’s graphic novel Watchmen. The Comedian was a rough, fatalistic superhero, and that character shows through in the model. You can read more about it at Eero’s blog.

She may be trouble, but oh she’s pretty

For years I’ve marveled that so many people discount Bionicle and Hero Factory as worthless to adult builders. There are many, many fantastic examples that prove otherwise, and this stunning she-devil by Eero Okkonen (Pate-keetongu) is just the latest example of great ingenuity and creativity being displayed without using many traditional stud-and-tube bricks. The rubber bands forming the ties on the bodice, and the Bionicle chains forming the skirt are both phenomenal parts usages.

Tiny tank chaser

Before I hand things over to Keith for the weekend, I think I owe our readers a somewhat more adorable chaser to follow all the super-serious discussions about LEGO and the military this week. This “MK45-Toad” is brought to you by Eero Okkonen (Pate-keetongu).

The use of binoculars for the tank treads is brilliant, and even the minifig includes some interesting part combinations, like the modern/space visor on the LEGO Castle helmet.
