The snowpocalypse is upon us!
After arriving home from sunny New Zealand, I’ve been watching the snow accumulate here in Seattle for the past week.
Many parts of the United States have been gripped by an Arctic freeze, inspiring Improbcat to dub our collective freeze the Snowpocalypse:
This looks like a great set of vehicles for navigating the frigid wasteland, and a cool group of minifigs to hang out with along the way.
Has the global financial crisis affected our LEGO hobby?

After marveling at Sean’s fantastic brick-built newspaper, I started wondering if the economic meltdown has affected how we buy or build LEGO these days.
Are we buying less LEGO? Buying more for some reason? Waiting to buy on sale or clearance? Getting inspired to build things that evoke the times, like the zombie apocalypse? I don’t know.
So, I thought I’d write a quick post and put up a new poll (finally!) to ask you, dear readers, how things are different for you today compared with a few months or a year ago. Sound off in the comments and vote in the new (completely unscientific) poll.

Zombie Apocafest 2008: Children, avert your eyes!
Zombie Apocafest 2008 just wrapped up at BrickCon, and I spent about an hour taking pictures.
Front and center in the display was Ryan Wood‘s beautiful watchtower:
Josh, Nannan, and I awarded “Best Zombified Building” to Paul Hetherington‘s “Casa Baron”:
Paul’s building has a full interior, including comfy chairs and a working elevator. We loved the art deco details, many of which incorporate organic shapes:
The similarly unanimous choice for “Best Zombified Vehicle” was Andrew Lee‘s awesome truck:
In addition to the Zombie Defense Weapons Packs donated by BrickArms, the good people at Valve (the studio that brought us Half-Life and Portal) sent along a bunch of Left 4 Dead T-shirts and a great billboard:
Valve even invited a bunch of people to tour the Valve office on Friday night, where Lonnon Foster posed with Gordan Freeman (photo by Don Solo):
The LEGO zombie display wouldn’t have been possible without the organizational genius of LEGOLAND California model maker Gary McIntire — who even spent the plane ride up to Seattle creating custom zombie heads.
At least 35 participants contributed nearly 30 original buildings, dozens of vehicles, and hundreds of minifig zombies and survivors.
LEGO Certified Professional Dan Parker contributed a super-detailed mall, complete with a LEGO Store, baby store, Spencer’s Gifts, and food court:
Will there be a Zombie Apocafest 2009? Undoubtedly.

With so much amazing stuff to blog, I sometimes feel like we don’t feature the smaller creations often enough. I really think small creations take a lot of talent to design well, which is one reason why I like Tim Zarki‘s dive suit so much:
This would be perfect for, you know, hunting underwater zombies. ;-)
Counting down to BrickCon 2008 and the Zombie Apocafest

BrickCon 2008 is less than a month away. The list of attendees is growing, and it’s starting to look like this will be the first 200-attendee BrickCon!

Taking back our streets from the LEGO zombie horde

My contribution to the LEGO Zombie Apocafest display we’re organizing is an auto repair shop and a fire station in a diorama that I’m currently calling “The Outbreak”:
Zombies converge on the residents of my modular buildings as they attempt to fight back. The architecture may have been the focus of my building energies for once, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t neglected some good, old-fashioned minifig action:

Crimson Wolf leads an expedition to Shangri La
Occasionally, a builder will seem to emerge — fully formed, as it were — onto the LEGO scene. Kevin Crimson Wolf Fedde has posted more gorgeous LEGO dioramas in the past two months than I can count, though we here at The Brothers Brick only became aware of Kevin when Nathan posted his Dragon Temple.
In this diorama, a group of explorers attempts to find the legendary Shangri La. Note the blending of the white with the gray and subtle details like the caves:

A slimy, dark green alien invasion (with bonus zombies!!!)
In Kristian‘s imagination, aliens are rather clumsy while landing their flying saucers and aren’t especially known for their hygiene:
The slime is rather amusing, and I can’t help but chuckle at the poor guy who didn’t manage to get out from under the saucer’s landing gear.
While we’re at it, here’s the sort of great zombie scene we’re encouraging Brothers Brick readers to bring to the LEGO Zombie Apocafest at BrickCon in October:
