Mickey Mouse is coming back to Duplo [News]

After recent leaks that 2016 would bring us a Disney-themed Collectible Minigifures line, we now have some confirmation that there is going to be more of everyone’s favourite mouse in the LEGO world. On LEGO’s official Instagram account, this short Mickey animation was posted:

Get ready for a visit from a very special #LEGODUPLO guest! We are so excited!

The brief looped video shows a rough outline of a Mickey Mouse Duplo minifigure. While Mickey Mouse and co. have had the LEGO treatment before, that was 15 years ago in 2000. The “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse” also includes Minnie Mouse, Goofy and Donald Duck, so expect to see those soon.

Life-size LEGO TARDIS materializes in Sydney, ready to transport the Twelfth Doctor [News]

Australian LEGO Certified Professional Ryan McNaught and his workshop team have built a life-sized replica of the TARDIS from Doctor Who. Images of the LEGO TARDIS on Bondi Beach in Sydney started circulating on the web yesterday, but you can see it in person at the Zing Pop Culture Store in Macquarie Park through the 18th this month, and then at the Doctor Who Festival in Sydney on the 21st and 22nd of November.

We reached out to Ryan and the BBC to uncover some details and exclusive photos not shared elsewhere. Ryan tells us that his team of 5 builders spent 45 hours just to design the LEGO TARDIS, and then 206 man hours to build it. Everyone is sworn to secrecy on the part count, since the BBC will be holding a contest to guess the number of LEGO pieces used to build it — suffice to say it’s a fairly insane number of dark blue LEGO all in one place! Built to exacting specifications provided by the BBC archives, it stands 316 bricks high (303 cm or nearly 10 feet tall).

The front of the TARDIS features a brick-built notice and fully functional door, which will enable Peter Capaldi himself to emerge from the LEGO TARDIS at the Doctor Who Festival later this month.

The light on top works, and Ryan’s team even built a matching Sonic Screwdriver.

To enable the BBC to transport the LEGO TARDIS to various events, it incorporates an internal steel frame. As to other secret details, Ryan tells us, “It may in fact be bigger on the inside, it certainly felt like it when we were building it!

UPDATE: Ryan has added some more photos to his Flickr photostream, including this great photo of the team behind this epic build.

Polybag foldout reveals 2016 LEGO Star Wars sets & minifigs [News]

Polybags of Finn from The Force Awakens are starting to show up at brick-and-morter stores, and one of the interesting things about these small, early sets is that they include a foldout with the first good, official photos of 2016 LEGO Star Wars sets. Brickset has gotten ahold of one of the fold-outs.

Star Wars 2016

The photos show several Battle Pack sets from both the Classic Trilogy and The Force Awakens, along with the first views of a Carbon Freezing Chamber set (75137), Rebel emplacement on Hoth (75138), and another redesigned escape pod with more figs than just the usual Artoo and Threepio (75136).

The back of the foldout reveals better photos of the individual minifigs that come in these sets.

LEGO Dimensions Starter Pack $15 off, Wave 2 packs out now [News]

The LEGO Dimensions Starter Pack is currently 15% or $15 off from Amazon.com. I’m still working on completing the game as best I can without all of the expansion packs so I can write a review here for everybody, but the game crashed on save recently and took a month’s worth of save data with it.

While that’s not a ringing endorsement for the game, if you haven’t picked it up and you plan to, you can help support The Brothers Brick by buying video games like LEGO Dimensions by clicking through from here.

Also, the second wave of Level Packs, Team Packs, and Fun Packs were released this week, including the new Doctor Who Level Pack with the Twelfth Doctor and K-9.

First glimpse of new LEGO Ninjago sets [News]

Back when we were hearing rumors of the upcoming 2016 sets, it was hinted that the next place for the Ninjago theme to go was straight up with a floating-rock setting reminiscent of Bioschock Infinite.

Now we have an official taste of the upcoming change of setting, and it seems to be called “Ninjago Skybound.” It is accompanied by the text “Careful what you wish for”.

Ninjago 2016

In the artwork we can see some new set(s) being shown off with two airships and a dragon-type creature. The overall feel looks very Steampunk, which we’re sure will make a lot of people happy. The most interesting aspect we can see is what looks to be a new bigfig that appears very similar to a Shredder from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles who has been experimenting with steroids. Also, check out that monkey-wrench wielding monkey! Finally, the presence of a bad guy and the “Careful what you wish for” text makes us believe the new setting will tie into genie mythology.

LEGO Ideas fails all 13 projects in first round of reviews for 2015 [News]

Disappointing news today for LEGO fans hoping to get their models turned into official sets, or looking forward to purchasing interesting new models. This morning LEGO announced that they have finished examining all 13 projects which passed the 10,000 vote mark on LEGO Ideas during the first quarter of 2015, and that none of the projects will be moving forward to become official sets. The potential projects included intellectual properties such as Legend of Zelda, Discworld, The International Space Station, a miniature version of Nathan Sawaya’s famous Yellow LEGO sculpture, and the Golden Girls, as well as a brick-built Tyrannosaurus Rex, a model of the Titanic, and a castle-themed market, among others.

LEGO says that each of the models either rely upon IPs whose owners cannot come to an agreement with LEGO, or the models are too closely related to current or future LEGO products, or they would be too difficult to turn into an official LEGO set.

In the one glimmer of hope given, LEGO says they are still considering the previous round’s F7A Star Hornet from the forthcoming crowd-funded video game Star Citizen, though with the caveat that LEGO may still choose to deny this project as well.

LEGO Ideas 1st 2015 Review

Finally, here are the candidates for the next review round, the results of which are set to be announced in early 2016.

A story of Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, LEGO, and a lot of miscommunication [News]

LEGO is usually in the news for positive events — recently it was a tower of the stuff breaking a world record — and even when the news is bad, it’s because everyone wants some of it. But this is a different story altogether.

Chinese artist, political prisoner, and human rights activist Ai Weiwei is known for his strong stance for freedom of speech and other civil liberties in the People’s Republic of China, and this reflects in his work. In September Ai requested a bulk order of LEGO for his studio and a project the studio was working on, and was denied. He quotes the reply stating “they cannot approve the use of Legos for political works” on his Instagram account.

A photo posted by Ai Weiwei (@aiww) on Oct 23, 2015 at 6:04am PDT

Up until that point this seems to be par for the course: The LEGO Group, a company that produces and sells toys aimed at children and teenagers, has the right to restrict sales of their products freely. It must be noted, however, that Ai could have purchased what he needed through standard retail or secondary market channels, albeit without the discount associated with a bulk order directly from the LEGO Group. This was not clear when The Gaurdian reported on the story, incorrectly stating that he was “banned” from using the product.

Ai WeiweiThe article, which has since spread and lead to numerous other stories that seem to confuse key details, seems to be the root of the misconception. Strangely, the body copy of the story and the headline are contradictory, as no source is ever given for Weiwei being “banned”.

A day after the original story, The Guardian ran a follow-up which focused on Weiwei receiving a large influx of Lego donations. Again, there is no source citing Weiwei being banned, or how such an incident would be incited or enforced.

We reached out to our contacts at the Lego Group for comment, and they shared the following statement:

The LEGO Group does not comment on the dialogue we have with our customers, partners, consumers or other stakeholders. We acknowledge that LEGO bricks today are used globally by millions of fans, adults, children and artists as a creative medium to express their imagination and creativity in many different ways, including projects that are not endorsed or supported by the LEGO Group. We also respect any individuals’ right to free creative expression, and we do not censor, prohibit or ban creative use of LEGO bricks.

As a company dedicated to delivering creative play experiences to children, we refrain – on a global level – from engaging in in or endorsing the use of LEGO bricks in projects that carry a political agenda. Individuals may obtain LEGO bricks in other ways to create their LEGO projects if they so desire, but in cases where we receive requests for donations or support for projects – such as the possibility of purchasing LEGO bricks in very large quantities – and we are aware that there is a political context, we uphold our corporate policy and decline the request to access LEGO bricks directly.

Based on this additional information directly from LEGO, we can say for certain that The Guardian is incorrect in their usage of the word “ban” and “banned” in their articles, and that Ai enjoys the same freedom to purchase LEGO bricks as every other builder and “LEGO artist” in the world. He has simply been denied the ability to purchase LEGO bricks in bulk quantities at discounted prices directly from the The LEGO Group.
