Toyota’s retro cruiser

Pēteris Sproģis generally builds excellent small vehicles, but lately he has been building larger ones and they do not disappoint either. His Shelby Mustang recently won the 75th LUGNuts challenge and he has now built a superb rendition of Toyota’s FJ Cruiser.

Toyota’s orginal FJ Land Cruiser set a new standard of reliability for off-road vehicles, practically replacing the traditional Land Rover in Africa, whilst in the US it gained a bit of a cult-following. The FJ Cruiser is a modern interpretation of this classic, with similar off-road performance and with retro styling. I don’t think it’s a particularly pretty car, but compared to other Toyotas, which are about as interesting as wet spaghetti, it is distinctive. When building a model of a car with distinctive looks, like the FJ Cruiser or a Hummer or VW Beetle, you can mess up the proportions pretty badly before it will no longer be recognizable. However, Pēteris’ model is just about perfect.

Last rites

Mihai Marius Mihu brings us another in his series of strange, otherworldly and vaguely unsettling creations. This sculpted priest might be my favorite thus far, with a fantastic mix of subtle spacing and layering which wouldn’t look out of place in either Pan’s Labyrinth or Prometheus.

Pauper and Prince

It’s 2-for-1 mecha tuesday, and zi zy is presenting us with both the bare-bones rough and ready groundpounder;

As well as his fully tricked out, all options included ivy league cousin. Heated leather seats and extra large cup holders come standard.

Too adorable to smush

This cleverly constructed mosquito by CaptainSmog could almost be forgiven for landing on your arm, if it weren’t several orders of magnitude larger than the real thing. Those plaintive eyes warrant at least a small blood donation.

Steampunkikoma? Steampunk Prospector Bot

I’m not always a fan of steampunk creations, but I love this build by Ted Andes (Ted @ndes). There are a lot of nifty little details on this build, and they’re largely intentional. I especially like the big glass eye, and the glass old style gauges on the side. The builder’s description of the symbiotic relationship with the wind-up cowboy is also a nice touch, and the perfect bit of steampunk absurdity.

Wolverine LEGO sketch

It’s not the first time a pile of bricks has become art, but Adam Dodge shows us that superheros seem to magically appear everywhere:

Though technically this isn’t a ‘build’ more of a carefully stacked pile – it does get huge bonus points for using only minifig weapons.

(now someone do Batman).

The hardscrabble Scarabee

This subtly menacing starfighter by Shamisenfred conveys a chitinous armored look all the more impressive for its still uncommon olive green livery. The sticker work is phenomenal as well, but the curved cockpit has to be my favorite detail.

Two piece micro castle

MocPages’ annual MocAthalon is in full swing! One of the more unique contests in the community, teams of five work to build in 30 different zany categories.
Justin and Jordan W. (General JJ) steps up and puts in this fantastic build for his team:

You might say it’s not really that amazing given some of the other micro builds we’ve seen … But take a closer look, this build was for the ‘Pair Dare’ category – where only two elements (of any colour) may be used. Yes, this entire build is made out the 1×1 slopes and the 1×2 masonry profile bricks.
Really fantastic parts use guys, good luck to you, and all the teams (you’ll need it!).

LEGO Unveils New 75059 UCS Sandcrawler [NEWS]

Apparently, while I was laid low by the flu this weekend, LEGO went ahead and unveiled the latest in the Star Wars UCS line. They also revealed that, starting with this set, UCS sets will have different and distinct packaging from other sets in the Star Wars line. It looks like they’ve done their best to cram this thing full of play features, which helps justify the hefty price of $300 USD. A pirateship built for two

One of the really fun things I like to do is collaborate on builds – Eurobricks had the same idea with the Pirates Teamwork Contest. One of the entries was by Cara Lego and Legonardo Davidy. These two builds are just full of fun play features and brilliant detail – and I’d knock over my black seas barracuda to proudly display this ‘set’ instead:

Lego Star Wars Battle on Saleucami 75037 [Review]

The Lego Star Wars Battle on Saleucami is one of the new Star Wars sets released in March 2014. This set retails for $14.99 and is available on Amazon. Below is a brief video review and my remarks regarding the set.

Pros:

Includes a unique BARC trooper, 3 olive green grass stems, and a spring-loaded launcher
The set is built like a target practice range, and it’s fun to shoot at the droids

Cons:

Comes with only one unique minifig

This set is essentially an upgraded battle pack with the added feature of a target practice playset. This is currently the cheapest set to get the spring-loaded shooter, which is one of the coolest bricks that Lego has released. The speeder is well-designed with the skis/fins contributing to the more dynamic look of the model. The olive green grass stems are exclusive to this set, and it’s useful in many creations that need foliage. If only the set had more than one unique minifig, then it would make this a true gem. Nevertheless I still highly recommend this set both for the great play feature and useful parts.
