Brickworld 2008 is coming (June 19-22)

Brickworld, a LEGO convention in its second year hosted in Chicago, will be taking place in less than two weeks on June 19-22. It is never too late to register, but it’s better to do so sooner than later. I’ll be attending in part on behalf of The Brothers Brick to update the blog with pictures and news.

Meanwhile, the most recent episode of LAML Radio conducts an informative interview with Bryan Bonahoom, one of Brickworld’s main coordinators, to give the lowdown on the event and what’s happening.

You can see pictures of last year’s Brickworld in this flickr gallery.

Picking up the Pieces ApocaLEGO contest on Flickr [w00t!]

The ApocaLEGO group on Flickr is hosting a contest that asks builders to illustrate how civilization rebuilds itself after the LEGO apocalypse.

There are entry categories for small and large LEGO creations, but the key to the contest is that the post-apocalyptic survivors should be “actively building/creating something important to their continued survival.” What a refreshing change from the usual gloom and doom!

You can even win some LEGO, so this is your chance to get some loot for your shining beacon of LEGO hope in a desolated LEGO landscape.

The contest ends on July 31, 2008.

New sets: 8637 Volcano Base, 8636 Deep Sea Quest, and 4210 [News]

Eurobricks found pictures of two new upcoming LEGO Agents sets and a City set. I like to take a moment and thank Eurobricks and a few of their persisent members who dig in LEGO’s image cache to bring us these images. Click on each picture to see more of the set. I like all three for the diversity that they contribute to their respective themes, and I look forward to them later in the summer.

New upcoming Star Wars sets: Homing Spider-Droid and The Twilight [News]

Eurobricks has the first pictures of the newest Star Wars sets: Homing Spider-Droid and The Twilight. While we can’t make out much details from these images, I can see that there will be new unique minifigs, including Ahsoka. The Homing Spider-Droid looks especially well-designed while The Twilight can be a good set for more bley colored pieces. I look forward to these as with any Star Wars set.

So now that I’m an Ambassador, is this post legal? ;)

Nominations submitted for LEGO Ambassadors [News]

The submission deadline for LEGO Ambassadors was 4:00 PM PDT today. Thanks to everybody who suggested nominees, voted, and contributed testimonials, we had everything in place and I hit Send on the e-mail to LEGO with over 15 minutes to spare! :-D

538 people voted, and here are the results:

  • Andrew Becraft: 323 votes
  • Nannan Zhang: 273 votes
  • Adrian Florea: 171 votes
  • Tim Gould: 152 votes
  • Nathan Proudlove: 101 votes
  • Ley Ward: 81 votes

Although Adrian had the votes to be the third nominee, we didn’t get enough testimonials for him. That means the next person with the necessary number of testimonials (three) became the third nominee. The final list of nominees is:

  • Andrew Becraft
  • Nannan Zhang
  • Tim Gould

With the votes and testimonials in place, we put together the submission package earlier today and I sent it off to LEGO.

We’ve learned a lot from this process, and if LEGO uses the same process next year, we’ll probably do things a bit differently — like not waiting until the last day to put together the submission! If you have any feedback on how we went about this, please feel free to post a comment here or use the Contact page to send us a private message.

Speaking personally now that the nomination process is over, I’m humbled by all the votes cast in my favor, and touched by all the kind words readers posted as testimonials. If selected by LEGO as an Ambassador for the 2008-2009 cycle, I’ll do my very best to represent all of you out there.

Wish us luck! :-)

(For those of you who are also on Flickr, I submitted those nominations as well. Read more in the discussion thread there.)
