LEGO Superheroes Mighty Micros: 76063 The Flash vs. Captain Cold and 76065 Captain America vs. Red Skull [Review]

The March wave of LEGO sets brings us lots of new sets, including the new Elves Dragons and Speed Champions we’ve already reviewed. But it has a more cartoonish face too, by the name of Mighty Micros. This new line brings to LEGO Superheroes (of both Marvel and DC persuasion) the chibi-fied look that’s now familiar to LEGO Star Wars fans through the popular Star Wars Microfighters line. Today I’m taking a look at two of these new Superheroes sets, provided to us courtesy of LEGO. Both 76063 Mighty Micros: The Flash vs. Captain Cold and 76065 Mighty Micros: Captain America vs. Red Skull retails for $9.99 USD.

Functioning LEGO pinball machine bounces you from the Shire to Mordor [Video + Interview]

We’ve posted several impressive LEGO-built games over the years (including LEGO versions of Settlers of Catan, TrenchGo, and even a LEGO Star Wars pinball machine), but Jonas‘s Lord of the Rings-themed game is truly jaw-dropping. This one hundred percent LEGO, fully functioning pinball machine includes microscale scenes from all your favorite Middle Earth locations, including Hobbiton (the ball shooter lane), Helms Deep, Ortanc, Weathertop (a bumper), Fangorn, Minas Tirith, and even the Black Gates of Mordor (each gate is a flipper!)

The machine is over two feet long and a foot wide and tall (or 62cm x 32cm x 36cm to be precise) and Jonas says it took him twelve straight hours of work and more than 2000 pieces to create this arcade masterpiece.

76052 LEGO Batman Classic TV Series Batcave [Review]

When we announced details of LEGO’s enormous new 76052 Classic Batcave set last month it almost melted our Facebook page. There hasn’t been this kind of buzz about a new set since the release of the equally enormous 76042 SHIELD Helicarrier last year. I wanted to see what all the fuss was about, so I donned my cape, hopped in the Bro-mobile, rappelled up the outside of a mall, and KAPOW-ed my way through the local LEGO store to secure a copy of this decidedly spendy $270 set.

18,000+ piece LEGO Fortress of Solitude shames all other vacation homes

Sometimes one just needs to fly away from all the hustle and bustle of a city constantly in danger — and sometimes an artist decides to step out of their comfort zone for the challenge, and in the process, produce amazing results. That was the intent behind JanetVanD‘s latest build: the famous “Fortress of Solitude” from the 1978 film Superman. In stark contrast to Janet’s previous creation, the equally gorgeous Her Majesty’s Theater, with its detailed interior, this build focuses largely on the natural icy exterior while the famous crystal-pyramid structure that makes up the fortress itself gleams in the background–but nonetheless commands absolute attention.

Fortress of Solitude by JanetVanD

Superman’s vacation home took Janet 160 hours to complete and required 18,684 pieces in total. All of which were put to good use creating a realistic landscape that really sells the necessary ‘solitude’ requirement. No doubt only a person with the fortitude of Superman would choose such as place as this to have some uninterrupted downtime.

LEGO Speed Champions 75874 Chevrolet Camaro Drag Race [Review]

If the 2016 Ford Mustang that I reviewed introduces American muscle to LEGO’s Speed Champions party, then 75874 Chevrolet Camaro Drag Race turns the music up and gets things rolling. It features a 1969 Camaro facing off against its 2016 counterpart for a drag race. The set has 445 pieces including three minifigs, and will be available in March for $29.99 USD. Thanks to LEGO for sending us this copy for an early review.

LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures TV trailer released [News]

Over the weekend, TBB brought you photographs and videos of the newly unveiled 2016 LEGO Star Wars sets at Toy Fair New York. The new sets included a few sets and figures from the brand new Disney XD animated series LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures which is set in an era between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

The trailer for the new series has begun circulating online and gives further details about the Freemakers, a family of three sibling scavengers who collect damaged ships and parts from across the Galaxy, turning the old parts into new ships — called “uglies” in Star Wars lore.

The three siblings, Kordi, Zander, and Rowan, become involved in an epic battle of good vs evil when youngest brother Rowan discovers part of a light saber forged entirely of Kyber Crystals.

Folklore tells of a Jedi Master who forged the Kyber Saber, a lighsaber made entirely of Kyber Crystals. When it proved to be too powerful, the Jedi Master shattered it, and scattered the crystals throughout the galaxy, to keep the power out of evil’s hands. With help from their droid Roger and a ‘shero’ named Naare, the siblings begin a quest across the galaxy to retrieve the Kyber Crystals before the Emperor does.

LEGO at Toy Fair New York 2016: Wrap-up [News]

The 2016 New York Toy Fair continues through tomorrow, but with the LEGO preview event we attended on Saturday morning, we’re ready to summarize our coverage here at The Brothers Brick. Our friends over at From Bricks to Bothans have also provided excellent coverage of all the licensed themes, so be sure to head over there and check out comprehensive coverage from them (with the event limited to just two hours, we missed a few things while trying to cover everything). Similarly, Joe Meno has also posted photos on Flickr.

The biggest news from Toy Fair was the official unveiling of 75098 Assault on Hoth.

75098 Assault on Hoth

Let’s just say that the reaction from the LEGO Star Wars fan community was … mixed, as illustrated by this useful diagram that’s been circulating on Facebook (we’re trying to dig up the original source — give him or her a shout-out in the comments if you know).

One item we haven’t covered yet is our demo video of the new Ghostbusters 3 Ecto-1.

How to get featured on The Brothers Brick, 2016 edition [Editorial]

Lemur with Jacket and PipeBack in 2009, I wrote a lengthy post titled How to get featured on The Brothers Brick, in 3 easy steps. A lot has changed in 7 years, for both TBB itself and on the web more generally, and it’s time we shared how we go about finding and selecting what to highlight here on The Brothers Brick in 2016.

The “three easy steps” I outlined back then are still 100% true:

  1. Build something cool.
  2. Take a few decent pictures.
  3. Put them somewhere we’ll find them.

But it’s worth revisiting what we expect in terms of presentation and “findability.” I’ll also cover what we consider newsworthy, in case you have an event you’d like us to feature or a hot tip you’d like to share.

LEGO Angry Birds in action at Toy Fair 2016 in New York [News]

Although we’ve already seen official photos of the LEGO sets from the Angry Birds movie, we had a chance to see them in person and play with one of the larger sets while at Toy Fair in NYC yesterday. All of the sets are scheduled for release in April 2016.
