Dark Knight training regime redefined for the LEGO Batman Movie

Builder David Liu redefines Batman training with this humorous scene. The story goes that Alfred was shocked to learn that Master Bruce accepted a role in a new LEGO movie. And since then, Batman has been doing some alternative training in his new secret “creativity” training room, supposedly building miniatures of his own vehicles and various other related themes.

What I appreciated about David’s build is actually the tiny representation of nano-sized vehicles and the tiny “The Bat” aircraft has got to be my favourite of them all.

If LEGO be the food of love, build on [Instructions]

I’ve been meaning to create a Brick-moji building guide for a while – the problem was deciding which one(s) to feature! After a couple of failed attempts and with Valentines Day looming, I finally settled on the “Smiling face with heart-shaped eyes”, an emoji that consistently ranks among the top ten most widely used across the web (…the original that is, not my model).

February is the month of love – for space rovers!

It’s February and that means one thing – no, not romance and chocolate, but space exploration rovers! Yes, it’s FebROVERy again and we’re seeing a ton of sweet entries into this annual event where builders focus on creating strange and fun little space exploration vehicles. Sailing the lofty skies of Ian McQue’s wild imagination

This sexy sky-fi creation by perig perig, inspired by concept artist Ian McQue, is incredibly detailed, with beautiful vibrant colors and red striping that presumably serve to avoid mid-air collisions. This simple yet elegant beauty looks like it could be sailing between high rise buildings in the not too distant future.

It is very reminiscent of Mr. Kim’s flying food cart in the Fifth Element. The Chinese lanterns strung across the rigging and the tendrils hanging from the hull are quite ingenious. But my favorite detail is that quirky roof on the small aft cabin.

I may look friendly, but I assure you I’m not!

Gundam mechs never come in pink, but this mecha inspired by Gundam Barbatos built by d’ Qiu Brick demonstrates how a simple color change can bring out a new theme and even a potential following of a fanbase! Utilising great SNOT techniques adds to the visual appeal in a clean and sharp look overall. While it may not look as menacing as you would imagine, never judge a book by its cover – don’t underestimate that sword that stands as tall as the mech!

UCS LEGO Star Wars U-wing gunship from Rogue One

With a pivotal role in Rogue One supported by an official 75155 Rebel U-wing Fighter LEGO set, it’s not surprising that LEGO builders have embraced the newest addition to the Star Wars fleet with custom LEGO U-wings like the one from Joshua Brooks. Taking things to the next level with his very first LEGO model posted on Flickr, Mirko Soppelsa has built a huge UCS-scale U-wing with smooth lines, great detail, and lots of functionality.

It’s as easy as A-B-C... LEGO font built from quarter tiles

In the decades-old history of LEGO fan creations, there have been many techniques to create brickbuilt letters, but never has it been as simple as now, with the new quarter circle and “fingernail” tiles. lisqr has used these new pieces to create the alphabet, both in lower and upper case. I have given the builder feedback on some of the letters that I feel could be improved, but the font looks pretty classy even as it is. With the growing supply of quarter circle tiles, I can imagine this technique appearing more and more in the future.

The builder also provides an LDD file of his alphabet. I can’t wait to see what other builders write with this!

Towers over azure waters

Built in transparent blue over white and grey, the sparkling azure water in this scene by Sergeant Chipmunk looks incredibly inviting. The three watchtowers use fantastic color schemes and a not quite “legal” technique to create wonderful shapes, standing on rocks with nary a stud to be seen and dabs of color that bring life to the vibrant scene. But the stand-out feature for me is the organically curved sail made out of leaves.

Do Batmans dream in color?

Although Batman only builds in black (and sometimes very, very dark grey), I’m sure he’d appreciate this wonderful rainbow creation by Alanboar Cheung which depicts a small child dressed as Batman, dreaming of being the Dark Knight. The build has great details, including a redesigned Duckmobile, adorable brick-built characters, and rainbows and clouds reminiscent of Cloud Cuckoo Land.

In addition to many of the villains and sidekicks from the LEGO Batman Movie, Alanboar also included every wacky version of Batman from the new sets and from the Collectible Minifigure series. Can you spot them all?

The day that bricks made time stand still

I can’t seem to stop staring and admiring this build by Cecile Fritzvold for more than a few reasons. The clean lines and great color contrast make me wish this was a real alarm clock set on LEGO store shelves. Those pentagonal shields which you may recognize from the Nexo Knights series seem like they were made perfectly for this purpose! One thing is for sure, this had not better have a snooze alarm, because it’s only going to end up in pieces every morning. Which may not be such a bad idea after all – snoozing means a rebuild which means you gotta think twice before hitting that button!

Engage the enemy with caution – two tangos at 3 o’clock!

Singaporean builder Kelvin Low has put together quite an impressive construction of an Atlas Mech from Titanfall. This mech has excellent greebling, making it visually interesting and full of detail. Greebling isn’t easy; it’s a matter of using the right parts to make it work both in design and color selection. This mech does a good job on both.

Get ready for a thrilling rafting adventure

Nothing spells adventure quite like whitewater rafting. David Zambito captures the action of the scene with the dynamic water made of clear plates, and the minifigs’ facial expressions add to the immersion. The water really warrants further inspection, with the subtle breaks in the rapids, especially the top-most one. The landscaping around the river may be simple, but it works.

The background edited into the photo makes the whole thing look real, but LEGO purists may be disappointed by this decision. In the end, if it looks good, I think it was worth it.
