Yes yes, it’s the 11th Doctor, but what about Captain Jack?

I’ve been enjoying the recent Doctor Who for several years now, but I actually preferred Torchwood. Regardless, I’m looking forward to the next incarnation of the Doctor — the 11th — here portrayed in LEGO, complete with a TARDIS, by Mark Stafford (lego_nabii):

Horns of an awesome vehicular dilemma

I was really torn between which of Marin Stipkovic’s vehicles to blog, his garbage truck or lime fire engine. Both had been sitting on my to-blog list for a few days, then I realized that I could do both. Eatin’ my cake.

The fire truck is slightly more glamorous, because . . . well . . . it’s a fire truck.

Great North tactical fire fighting truck

Who says fire engines have to be red or yellow? Leigh Holcombe (worker201) certainly doesn’t. Here’s his 8×8 tactical fire fighting truck, full of hooks, ladders, and all those compartments that make fire trucks awesome.

Get to the Chopper!

T.Oechsner still has the Neo Classic Space bug, and now he’s spread the theme to a motorcycle. He’s captured the look perfectly. He’s used old school bubble shaped tires, managed to create a frame over fender look. He’s also managed to get the right chunky and functional look common to that theme. Also, the red just looks sharp.

In the meantime, I built a far less impressive rocketbike. I guess bike fever has different effects on different people.

Cobra!

Ok, so maybe this creation has nothing to do with the villains from GI Joe, but I still want to shout “Cobra!” when I see it.

This fantastic rendition of an automotive classic was posted on Flickr by _lichtblau_. He’s really captured the look of the racing icon. In fact, when I saw the thumbnail image on Flickr, I thought this was a die cast model. I never build copies of other people’s models, but I’m seriously tempted to do so with this.

The BURPs don’t do much for me, but the Old One more than makes up for a lack of detail in the landscaping.

7684 Pig Farm & Tractor includes 4 porkers, out now [Mini-Review]

Perhaps a bit buried among the news about the release of 10211 Grand Emporiumicon and LEGO Board Games is that the new LEGO City set 7684 Pig Farm & Tractoricon is also out now.

I’m certainly excited by these other new releases, but it says something that I’m choosing to build the pig farm first. Seriously, pigs! Four of them! Mmmmm, bacon…

UPDATE: I just finished building the set, and it didn’t disappoint. Aside from the pigs, the set also includes a number of other parts I hadn’t gotten before, starting with the short-brimmed baseball cap and a new exhaust pipe piece that appears to be new in 2010.

The tractor includes a lot of nice lime green to complement your Power Miners acquisitions, as well as my favorite wheels and tires. For play value, it has several connection points compatible with attachments from 7637 Farm and 7634 Tractor.

Pork! And finally, the elephant (or pig) in the room — the inevitable comparison to BrickForge pigs.

As you can see from the set pictures, the LEGO pigs are similar in style to the new LEGO cows from the farm and 10193 Medieval Market Village.icon They’re more rounded, and to a certain extent more realistic than traditional LEGO animals like the dog and horse (with printed eyes and rounded bellies).

BrickForge pigs, cows, and sheep share their design aesthetic with the older LEGO animals. Depending on whether you prefer your animals more consistent with your older LEGO animals or more adorably pot-bellied, there’s still a place for both BrickForge animals and their official LEGO counterparts. I like both.

LEGO Board Games now available in U.S. [News]

The very much anticipated LEGO Board Games are now available from the LEGO Shop online: NEW from LEGO® Shop LEGO Games. Play a new way.

UPDATE: Unfortunately, LEGO has informed us that release plans changed at the last minute and LEGO Board Games will not be released in Canada until later this year. Their release is U.S. only for the time being. Sorry, eh?

Consolidated 600-series Faran crane truck

We know Aleksander Stein best for his impressive military hardware, but he’s branched out lately with civilian versions of those vehicles. His latest is a highly detailed 6×6 crane truck:

The pneumatic crane on Aleksander’s truck isn’t just for show. Here, it’s lifting his Dragoon APV:

Mechagodzilla stands ready to take on the King of the Monsters

This Mechagodzilla by Yasutaka (AIWSMOYA) takes me back to the monster movies and TV shows my brother and I grew up watching early on weekend mornings back in Japan.

LEGO Mechagodzilla

The sculpting on Mechagodzilla’s head is particularly great, with nice use of cheese slopes and small wing plates.

This is also exactly the sort of LEGO creation we’d love to see tromping through a LEGO Tokyo for the Big in Japan display we’re planning for BrickCon 2010.
