Alex Jones (Orion Pax) brings to brick form one of my favorite movie ships, Captain Nemo’s infamous Nautilus. Although the Disney version differs significantly from Jules Verne’s description, its distinctive styling is iconic and I’m glad Alex has chosen to follow this rendition.
“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” This oft-quoted nugget from Arthur C. Clarke is perfectly embodied in this otherworldly model by Nick V. (Brickthing). It’s not often that I’m blown away by the aesthetics of a spacecraft, but Nick is one of the best builders in the community, and has been tearing it up of late. This model, an alien “deity” worshipped by ancient humanity, à la Stargate, is a study in excellence.
To avoid making every other post here on Brothers Brick one of Nick’s new models, I’m also going to point out this stunning bonsai tree.
Creative quad OliveSeon have unveiled a spectacular diorama based on the recently released LEGO Movie. Collectively, this group of four South Korean fans produce some of the best dioramas in the fan community. Their latest incorporates numerous official sets while cleverly expanding upon them to capture various scenes from the film.
David Frank (Fraslund) is one of the best period and fantasy architecture builders currently working. You may recall the last project of his that we featured here, the gigantic Rivendell diorama he constructed with Alice Finch. As much as I loved Rivendell, as a longtime pirates fan, I have to say that David’s latest model, though smaller, enthralls me just as much.
Ghostbusters will be the next official Cuusoo set, LEGO announced today on the blog for the Cuusoo site. Cuusoo is a LEGO website that allows fans to submit ideas to LEGO. If an idea garners 10,000 votes, LEGO will examine if they are able to turn the idea into an official set. Several sets gained the requisite votes in the last review session, but thus far only fan Brent Waller’s Ghostbusters project has been confirmed for transformation into an official set. Another Ghostbusters project also reached the 10,000 vote mark, but LEGO has decided to only pursue Waller’s project, since it reached the vote threshold first, and the model designers liked the car better.
We don’t know yet what the final set will look like, since, as is the case with all Cuusoo projects, it is the idea, not the specific model, that LEGO has agreed to produce. Pictured above is Waller’s Ghostbusters model.
Created by Jose Carlos Fernandez, these Star Wars caricatures of Paploo the Ewok and an ill-fated Scout Trooper are simply adorable. If these were a set, I’d buy them.
We see a lot of mechs around here, so I’m always keen on ones that stand out visually. This beauty by piratesxlovexrum does just that with this action shot of it offloading a full barrage.
This monster construction vehicle by Technic guru pipasseyoyo is a complex blend of Technic engineering and skillful brick sculpting. The articulated dump truck is fully controlled by remote and features a tipping bed, six-wheel drive, and powered articulated steering. Be sure to check out the video of it in action.
Here’s a wonderful little vignette by Steve (workshysteve) depicting a British soldier in Abyssinia (modern day Ethiopia) during the British invasion of 1868. The monochromatic browns really bring this vignette together, and Steve’s design for the hut’s thatched roof is perfect.
I can’t see a Korean Geobukseon, or Turtle ship, without thinking of the many hours I’ve spent playing Age of Empires II. Alex Jones’ (Orion Pax) armored battleship is a superb model of this beautiful style of Asian shipbuilding which LEGO builders rarely cover.
Looking more like a movie still than a traditional brick sculpture, I had to look twice at this beautiful image by David Hensel (Legonardo Davidy) to be sure that it was, in fact, completely LEGO. Making wonderful use of his fantastic building skills and some great forced perspective techniques, this is one of David’s best models so far.
Matt De Lanoy (Pepa Quin) turns to a classic subject I’ve rarely seen in LEGO form before: Looney Toons. The figures are spot on. Now all we need is for Matt to build Elmer Fudd to hunt the wabbit and duck.
