Chris Malloy (porschecm2) has been a LEGO fan nearly all his life, having started with System bricks at age 3. He is the co-author of Ultimate LEGO Star Wars, and his creations have been featured in several books and The LEGO Movie. He also helped develop the first LEGO Minecraft set, 21102 Minecraft Micro World: The Forest, which has gone on to inspire a whole theme of sets.
He's been active in the online community since 2002, and regularly attends LEGO fan conventions such as BrickCon and BrickCan. He enjoys building in a wide range of themes, but keeps returning to Castle, Space, and Pirates.

We’ve seen the Friends minidolls show up in all sorts of interesting creations since they were introduced in 2012, including sky-fi airplanes, giant spaceships, tiny spaceships, and mechs. But these anime-inspired hardsuits may just be one of the best uses I’ve seen yet. When paired with the crazy hairpieces from LEGO’s official anime-inspired theme in 2006-2008, Exo-Force, the minidolls look like they’re straight out of an anime. And builder 3D Foundry has done some great work building cool hardsuits for them.

The aggressively clean lines of this ship belie its complexity. If you look closely, you’ll note that builder Chris Perron (thebrickbin) employs a healthy dose of complex techniques to achieve the sweet stylings of this space fighter. Plus, trans-neon-green is an unused color in modern space builds, and it looks just stunning here.

Tim Goddard (Roguebantha) has been on something of a cosmic constabulary kick lately, bringing forth a number of glorious models from that best-of-the-80’s LEGO theme, Space Police. So far he’s got a large landing craft, a nifty little runabout, some smaller vehicles and drones, and my favorite, the quintessential icon of the omnipresent State, a watchtower. The models have all been given a healthy dose of modern building techniques, while still incorporating the classic aesthetic. Updating old themes like this is a popular trend these days, but as long as they’re this well done, I don’t mind. Here’s a gallery of all Tim’s cool Space Police models.

Flickr user Letranger Absurde has been churning out brilliant beasties for Iron Builder, and his two newest creations are awesome. First up, there’s this insanity-inducing Cthulhu crouching over a greyscale cityscape, ready to unleash his indescribable horror upon the helpless denizens.
Next is a creature of eons past, that great wooly beast of the north, the Mammoth. The remains of which are still occasionally discovered intact, Mammoths ranged our planet during the last Ice Age, and while likely no more aggressive than modern pachyderms, would have been terrifying nonetheless for their enormity. This example, however, ranges more to the cute end of the spectrum, with large docile eyes and derpy stare.

This great seaplane by Сергей Антохин reminds me of the models I loved to build as a kid, except that this one is considerably better. This model has a distinct charm about it, almost looking like something LEGO could release as an official set. I mean, if this were an official set, I’d probably buy one.

I love using Bionicle pieces in non-Bionicle themed models, and it appears that Brother Steven shares that sentiment. This awesome spacesuit looks like a cross between Bioshock and Apollo, and it’s brilliant. LEGO Doctor Who and Wall-E sets have just been announced! LEGO Ideas has just released the results of the 2nd half 2014 review. LEGO Ideas is a crowd-sourcing platform for fan-designed sets. If a set gains 10,000 votes, LEGO will examine the ideas to potentially create a set. LEGO has just announced that both Doctor Who and Wall-E have passed the approval process, and the designs will now be further refined by master set designers at LEGO before being sold as official LEGO sets.

My mangled Star Trek quotes aside, this magnificent Enterprise model comes to us from Chris Melby. Chris has done a fantastic job with the circular disk of this iconic ship, managing to make it entirely studless. Don’t be deceived, though, this is actually a huge model at over 5 feet in length.

Fans have long speculated that a LEGO Avengers Helicarrier was in the works, and today LEGO officially confirmed those rumors. The new set, 76042 The SHIELD Helicarrier, is a gigantic microscale ship which rings in just shy of 3 feet in length. This is the first time LEGO has used tiny microscale figures (originally designed to be trophies) as characters in a playset. The set also comes with 5 regularly-sized minifigures, and can be motorized using LEGO Power Functions (not included). It will be available from LEGO Shop@Home in March.

Official set photos of the new wave of Avengers sets are now available. Marvel’s next big blockbuster, Avengers: Age of Ultron, releases on May 1, and we can expect these sets to hit stores shortly before that. The 5 sets in this lineup range from a small to large, and while pricing isn’t yet available for them, it’s a safe bet that they’ll range from $12.99 for the small set to somewhere around $70 or $80 for the Quinjet.
