Devil’s Den

My homeboy from Florida, Mike Yoder (M.R.Yoder) has been on a roll lately, building like a tweaker locked in a room with uncut product and plenty of LEGO. Yoder’s latest project has nothing to do with epic microscale spaceships or mecha hiding in barns. Instead Yoder takes us back to the “War of Nothern Aggression” as some in the southern portion of this country like to call it. The setting is incidental though; the real star of this diorama is the meticulous and dare I say original landscaping.

Devil's Den

This display is part of a collaborative effort Mike is hoping to bring to Brickfair VA in August, his first convention. Unfortunately, unless Mike can find a like-minded soul to split hotel expenses with, it won’t happen. Mike is a good guy, so if you’re headed to the convention anyay, why not save a few bucks and help get this diorama to Virginia? Hit Yoder up on Flickrmail if you’re interested in helping.

“Expect nothing of Walder Frey and you will never be surprised.”

SPOILER ALERT! If you have not seen the latest episode of Game of Thrones, don’t look or read any further…

diegoboy brings one of the more infamous scenes of George R.R. Martin’s Game of Thrones series to life with his take on the “The Red Wedding”. The builder does a great job focusing the somewhat chaotic action of the diorama and he certainly doesn’t skimp on the gore.

Scania LT146

Dennis Bosman (legotrucks) returns to the Brother-Ship for the third time this year with a massive truck that was just about a year in the making. If you’d like to have some factual details about this complex model, head on over to Mr. Bosman’s website where a wealth of stats and background information is waiting for you.

Scania LT146

I could have sworn I read about this model on another blog, but I can’t seem to recall the name. Oh well, its not like any one blog can claim the rights to a model.

Three for Kate

Although it is not something that TBB cares to publicize, there is a dark-side to blogging here. The experience is something akin to winning the lottery; as soon as your name gets put up on the marquee of the big blog, it seems like everyone wants a piece of you. Whether it is old drunken cronies who call in the small hours of the morning, demanding the spotlight for their pointy starfighters or some aftermarket weapons huckster with bags of freebies or something even more sinister. Sometimes, even the sanctuary of home and hearth is not safe from those who seek to curry favor and seek influence over the important choices we brother’s brick make on a daily basis. In this particular case, my 5 year old took a look at what I was blogging and said “Dad, there is a problem with your website…there aren’t any mermaids.” In the face of such overwhelming pressure, I folded like a cheap suit.

First up is Nathaniel (The Architect) and his simply titled Mermaid.

Chris Adams (Lucifer Adams) joins the undersea shenanigans with his Too Lazy To Swim.

Too Lazy To Swim #2

And finally, so that I might restore peace to the Goldman household and get that little micro-manager off my back, Cecilie’s (cecilhf) Little Mermaid.

“Everything’s shiny, Cap’n. Not to fret.”

Diamond Dave Shaddix and his co-conspirator Stephen Lanyi recently finsihed a 40″ x 30″ mosaic of maybe the best-loved starship engineer in the galaxy this side of Scotty. Also, unlike Jimmy Doohan, she’s not missing a finger. I’m talking of course about Firefly’s Kaylee Frye, played by actress Jewel Staite and now immortalized in ABS. Shiny Dave, very Shiny.

Odyssey

If you’re headed to Dallas for the Brick Siesta LEGO convention next month, keep your beady-eyes peeled for this sci-fi marvel called the UNES Odyssey 21 by Kyle Collard (lazerblade). In a universe of boilerplate, this ship is a breed apart with its unconventional design and delicate looking textures. To me it looks like some kind of deconstructed German flag. Your results may vary.

UNES Odyssey 21

The design for the Odyssey was inspired by another builder that should be familiar to constant readers of the weekend-shift, LEGOLIZE IT MAN. Forget fancy new product launches or collectible minifigs…for me, there is nothing better in this hobby than when two or more builders combine their talents on a build or an idea. Enjoy your Friday night slice of collaboration.

Friday Night Fights (Round 8)

Welcome back fight fans, to Sin City Nevada for another teeth-rattling edition of Friday Night Fights! Tonight’s bout has the Vegas odds-makers confounded and the betting public in a fury. Let’s go to the tale of the tape:

Fighting out of the red corner…from The Vertical City…Ryuhei Kawai (kwi-chang) and his “LHB-022_V.E.S.P.A_“.

Yellow LEGO mecha

And fighting out of the blue corner…from the mean-streets where pimpin’ ain’t easy…Jade Wisniewski (Taz-Maniac) and his “Trigger Happy“.

The Fight-team would also like to thank Jack Daniels, the official adult beverage of FNF. Enjoy some Jack with your favorite LEGO Ice-cube men, but always drink responsibly. Thanks to Karl Westworth for his contribution to tonight’s broadcast.

As usual, constant reader, you are tasked with deciding the outcome of this pugilistic endeavor by way of comment. On the last edition of Friday Night Fights, crusty veteran Brian Kescenovitz scored an early round knockout against his overmatched opponent, the judges called it 11-2: easily the most lopsided fight in the brief history of FNF.

The Soothing Sounds of Siercon & Coral

When I first encountered the work of Sean and Steph Mayo I thought to myself “Who are these new-age musician weirdos and what do they want from us?” I looked up articles on how to identify cults…you know, just to be ready.

This mosaic is titled Once Upon a Time…which to be honest doesn’t do much for me as a title. It simply isn’t new-agey enough. Perhaps something like “The Diagonal Woman”, “Lifescape” or “Quantum Dreams” would have been better?. The mosaic itself is masterful, but looking at it long enough has the same effect as new age music…I start to drift off.

Whistlebridge Pass

David Leest (Deviet) returns to the Brother-Ship after an almost two year absence. The diorama is a classic slice of fantasy boilerplate with soaring towers, meticulous rock-vomit and of course, access to the water table. The star of the show is the bridge that somehow anchors the model and helps to elevate the whole enchilada. Enjoy your Sunday serving of Castle.

Adding to the Constitution

It has been too long since we featured something for our Train-head friends on the big blog. Hopefully i don’t run afoul of Gambort, operating on his digital turf, but I couldn’t resist blogging this photogenic Vagon-CZRC by Valgarise The Vagon was built as a companion piece for set #79111 (Constitution Train Chase) and I think the builder did an admirable job replicating the style of the train.

Posh

Of course I’m talking about Victoria, the latest microscale-space build from LEGOLIZE IT MAN. This outstanding model almost made the cut for my micro-space roundup on Friday, but it didn’t fit the theme I had going. Since Sunday seems a little quiet, I don’t see any reason not to add one more, especially when it has such nice detail on each surface. I just hope the builder continues the naming convention and we see the MelB, MelC, Geri and Emma.

The Zephyr’s Knave

Although I’m not a huge fan of Steampunkery in general, I like to think I know a quality build when I see it. Tommy M (Eklund!) is clearly a man who knows the advantage of having an exclamation point after his name and a man who knows a thing or two about avoiding the pitfalls of thematic convention. I’m ready for Steampunk to run its course, if it hasn’t already, but so long as there are builds like this around, I’ll put up with it.

Oh, and I really like his use of nets….you don’t see enough quality net usage anymore.
