About Gambort

I'm a builder with a short attention span and a lot of virtual bricks. I'm probably most known as a train builder and was involved in the creation of LEGO set 10183 but I do a lot of other stuff too. I'm also a member of the LDraw SteerCo and a webmaster for the site.

Brickvention 2011 in Melbourne: Jan 14-16 (reminder)

Just a reminder to those in Australia that Brickvention 2011 will be held in under two weeks so if you’re planning to register as a full participant best get in quick. The public day requires no registration but for an AFOL I strongly recommend being there for all days.

Full details can be found on TBB or at the Brickvention website but the short of it is as follows:

  • Dates: 14-16 January (14-15 full participants only, 16 public day)
  • Venue: Melbourne Town Hall, corner of Swanston and Collins Streets Melbourne Victoria.
  • Cost: Full attendance – $50 for Full registration (over 15), $25 for under 15 registration, Public day – $6 Adults, $3 Children, $15 Family (2 Adults, 2 Children)

This year will be the fifth event and my third and I’ve had a great time each time. I highly advise all Aussie fans and especially those in and around Melbourne to come along.

And taking advantage of bloggers privilege I’ve included a preview shot of a collaborative layout between Mike Pianta (scruffulous) and me. If you come along on Friday you might even get to see me crying at the damage done by the Qantas baggage handlers.

Sand red rust bucket

Weathered old Alco

Every so often Peter Norman (swoofty) floods flickr with great train models. While this is great for LEGO train fans it makes life a bit difficult for me in choosing what to blog. This time I decided that the most novel of them all was a heavily weathered old Alco RS-1. Weathering in LEGO is hard enough at a small level but attempting it at this scale is even harder. I think Peter has made an admirable job of it here.

Anubis Awakens

The Ancient One

Apparently Andrew Lee (onosendai2600) has access to some of the new Pharaohs Quest sets. In his own words he is “too cheap to buy the pyramid set and don’t want a magnet fig. So this happens.” The whole Anubis figure is excellent but I’m especially enamored of the half-altered feet hinting at a transition from stone to flesh. The D&D fan in me thinks this is particularly nifty.

Drove my Chevy to the levy

Chevrolet Cameo - 1955

LUGNUTS is currently running an interesting monthly challenge and Peter Blackert (lego911) has more than risen to it. His ’55 Chevreolet Cameo appears to have all the little details just in the right spot. I’m sure Don McLean would appreciate it.

Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays/Enjoy your break

Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays

However you celebrate the holiday and whether or not you do I’d like to send out my warmest regards to all our readers. Enjoy your break if you get one.

And for those in countries that do not celebrate Christmas I apologise for a likely lack of blogging in the immediate future.

PS. And apologies to all for the poorly lit, tacky photo. Just remember it’s the thought that counts ;)

LEGO Speeder Bike Contest

Dust Mites

Aran Hudson (Cole Bl♠q) is organising a LEGO speeder bike contest over on Flickr. The contest takes place at the LSB – Lego Speeder Bikes Group and the thread for the announcement and discussion can be found here and the entry thread here.

First prize is a chrome Stormtrooper riding a bike with Chrome parts. And the 2nd and 3rd prizes are random Minifigs from the MS2. A special Speeder Bike with rider is for the most innovative concept.

Printed Circuit video clip made entirely from LEGO

Stop-motion filmmaker and AFOL Chris Salt (0ldScratch) has created an entirely brick-animated video clip for one of the latest tracks by Printed Circuit. This is some of the smoothest brick animation I’ve seen and the use of the M-Tron torsos is brilliant.

Suggested by Pete Reid and my apologies to Pete, Chris and our readers for taking so very long to finally get it posted.

Motorised Rocket

As unbelievable as it seems it appears that M and M has managed to make an adorably cute and motorised version of Stephenson’s Rocket. The original is notable as one of the first effective steam trains and the LEGO version might just be the first effective pull-back motor train.

King of the cold

Blizzard_Peak

Aaron Williams (m_o_n_k_e_y) ignores Summer to bring us Blizzard Peak. I wouldn’t fancy being the pilot of this beauty in a war but marching to parade would make me very proud.

Highly detailed LEGO Cutty Sark

DSC04278c

I’ve never seen work by Henrik Hoexbroe but I’ve definitely been missing out. His 1:50 model of the Cutty Sark is one of the most beautiful and accurate LEGO sailing vessels I have ever seen. Most notably his mixing of studs-out sculpting and other techniques to create fluid shapes is a textbook demonstration of what can be achieved in LEGO.

I want! I want! I WANT A GIGA-GRADER!

M-Tron Giga Grader

If the Giga-Grader appeared in the stores I’d channel my inner 3-year old and chuck a tantrum. Shannon Sproule (Shannon Ocean) had better be bringing this LEGO delight to Brickvention for me to see in the brick.

And since I’m trained as a mathematician I’ll summarise with an equation: Tonka toys + M-Tron + (60s vibe)^2 + Rocking Robot = Awesome.
