Stunning LEGO Nebulon-B Medical Frigate

The city tower architecture looks great with a variety of designs on show but remaining within a cohesive aesthetic and color scheme. And the use of binoculars for an elevated railway is inspired.

LEGO tape recorder is a retro-delight

Our younger readers will likely have no idea what this is, but Nathan Wells has built a fantastic cassette tape recorder model. The proportions are spot-on, but my favourite detail is the use of gold rings to provide the little touches of metallic detail in the mic and headphone sockets. Lovely stuff.

There’s even a cassette to go with it…

But what’s on the tape? Is it a compilation tape, pulled together for a new girlfriend? Or is it a pirated copy of the latest game for the ZX Spectrum? Only Nathan knows, and he isn’t telling.

Stings more than a hornet

I wouldn’t mess with forces utilizing gunships designed by builder Benjamin Cheh Ming Hann. His aircraft, named “WZ-13 Wespe Zorn ‘Hornet'”, was influenced by the Messerschmitt BF 110 and the A-10 Thunderbolt. Both of these design inspirations come together well in a simple yet effective gray/yellow color scheme. I love those A-10 inspired thrusters and the dual cockpits seating both pilot and navigator.

Space Grinder 2900

Just a short time ago The Brothers Brick hosted a rather tasty space inspired contest and the world was flooded with amazing futuristic eateries. While driving in too late for that contest, the Space Grinder 2900 ECO by Rat Dude has arrived from a future where food itself is a lot less appetizing than it is now. With a simple two point operating system, the Space Grinder 2900 ECO truly embodies the phrase “food on the go”.

Slay demons with a 20 pound LEGO Doom BFG 9000

Doom returns to popularity in gaming with a new installment to the series next month. What better time than now for YouTube LEGO builder ZaziNombies to build one of gaming’s most infamous weapons, the BFG 9000 (“Big F***ing Gun”) from Doom (1993), in 1:1 scale. Weighing over 20 pounds and built from over 5000 LEGO pieces, ZaziNombies’s detailed replica of the BFG more than lives up to the name. See it hauled around, discussed, and shown from the first person perspective in this three minute video.

Adam Savage’s One Day Build of Jason Allemann’s Sysiphus Kinetic Sculpture [Video]

We here at The Brothers Brick are long-standing fans of Jason Allemann and his beautiful works. Previously, we’ve featured many of his builds: his Mosaic Printer, robotic Cookie Decorator, and, of course, his beautiful Labyrinth ball maze, released as a LEGO Ideas set this year.

One of my favorites, though, is his kinetic sculpture of Sisyphus and his eternal struggle pushing the boulder. Turns out we aren’t the only big fans of this work of art. Adam Savage of Mythbusters and Tested fame saw a video of Jason’s sculpture, and contacted Jason, getting custom instructions and the parts necessary to duplicate the build.

In the video below, watch Adam Savage and Norman Chan build the sculpture, experiencing all the highs and lows and joys of building a large creation (including not being able to find that ONE part!)

Coat of Arms in LEGO

In a Coat of Arms, everything has meaning: the symbols, colors and placement all tell a story about the family it’s representing. Robert4168 tells us the tale of the fictional Dratiphe Coat of Arms. He tells us the Gauntlet stands for strong and prepared, and the Scales for justice. The Anvil stands for honor, and the Arrows mean readiness for war.

I love the sculpting and scale on all of the items on the coat of arms, and the scroll work is just lovely. It says, “Omnia Praesignis Est” and adds another level of complexity to the build.

How to make your own 14k solid gold LEGO Star Wars Han Solo [Video]

Fans of LEGO come from all walks of life, including jewelers—and what happens when a LEGO fan wants to encase a Han Solo minifigure in carbonite? Well, we haven’t yet figured out how carbonite works, so S.E. Needham jewelers teamed up with youtube channel JerryRigEverything to find out if 14k gold will do instead. Han Solo might actually be worth more than Collectible Minifigures Series 10’s Mr. Gold now.

Badshahi Mosque built with LEGO bricks

Recreating an actual building is often challenging with LEGO bricks and it becomes even harder when you need to build curved surfaces. It seems that John Snyder didn’t find the perfect solution to form the onion domes of Badshahi Mosque in Lahore, Pakistan. Nevertheless, he came up with an amazing oriental diorama! He has applied very subtle touches decorating the architectural piece and captured the overall appereance of the mosque very well. Careful tiling, delicate minarets and clear photography make the model appear less complicated than it really is. But it must have been a very hard build. Good job John!

Star Wars podracing under the sea with Ariel

Fan site Imperium der Steine is running a contest to create a LEGO build blending Star Wars and Disney. Cecilie Fritzvold has brought podracing to the world of The Little Mermaid in this colourful podrace under the sea, comically called the Boonta Reef Classic (a parody of the Boonta Eve Classic podrace). Cecilie tells us that the pods are built to match the characters: a clamshell for Ariel, a gastropod shell for Sebastian, and a “dead carcass turned evil” pod for Ursula, pulled by Flotsam and Jetsam.

This unique creation is full of beautiful colours and some ingenious parts used to merge Star Wars podracing into the Little Mermaid’s world. For example, Ursula’s pod mimics Sebulba’s pod in shape, but has a color scheme more befitting the evil octopus witch. All we are is dust in the wind

The stunningly accurate classic-rock album covers just keep coming! Following the Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd album covers we featured this month, comes W. Navarre‘s terrific LEGO version of Kansas’ Point of Know Return. Compare Navarre’s version to the original cover and you’ll see that he nailed it. I particularly love the Kansas lettering and eclipsed sun. I’m crossing my fingers that album covers will become a new LEGO building style after this bombardment of awesomeness.
