Vignettes are like the haiku of the LEGO world. Usually built on a base 8 studs wide by 8 studs deep, vignettes show a little scene or a moment in time. But like written poetry, there’s plenty of variation on the basic theme.

Tentacle eruptions

The subject of tentacle eruptions is worthy of study in addition to LEGO Communication. The amazing fact about tentacles is that they can spawn from any source, including the ground, the ocean surface, toilet, mecha, house roof, sci-fi pit, ancient cave, unholy shrine, alternative reality surface of dream worlds, and many many other places.

Our most recent example of tentacle eruption is found in Brickshelf user Crises‘ vignette called “Watch Your Bath,” for obvious reasons.

Referenced images from works by Rocko, Hippotam, Devastator, Nannan, Keith Goldman, Nabii, and Lee Jones in no particular order.

Before he came down here, it never snowed...

Rising star Harrison captures the stark contrast between the sterility of suburbia and the complexity of the title character in Tim Burton’s 1990 film Edward Scissorhands:

Using minifig legs in a creation — in this case as part of a topiary — is quickly becoming a signature of Harrison’s. And the new Speed Racer torso works beautifully for the minifig.

Scene from Silent Hill 4

The Silent Hill games are possibly the scariest horror video games out there, and that’s why I like them so much. Here’s a scene from Silent Hill 4, featuring a ghost and the protagonist, Henry Townsend.

The Skeleton Queen is very, very disappointed

Fedde makes good use of clear elements to illustrate the Skeleton Queen’s displeasure in a vassal:

Mini Hellfire Dreadnought

Alex Kahler minimized the Hellfire Dreadnought from Warhammer 40k into a micro vignette at the same time keeping all the defining details, making the model instantly recognizable to fans of the game.

Kyle Katarn’s Moldy Crow by RogueBantha

One of the things that got me into Star Wars back in the 90’s was the PC game Dark Forces (released in 1995).

Tim “RogueBantha” Goddard has created a vignette to showcase his microscale Moldy Crow (an older creation):

I wasted far too many hours late at night blowing stormtroopers away with the concussion rifle and avoiding thermal detonators thrown by three-eyed Grans (“Tink tink tink…BOOM!”). Ah, good times…

Tim’s latest is actually a lovely little Theta-class shuttle, shown here with Palpatine and a pair of clones:

COOL machine

Shannon Ocean‘s latest work criticizes conformity with the COOL machine. Unique individuals enter and generic drones come out. Is this how personality is suppressed?

Jas Nagra uses green fuels in his hotrods

Well, at least I can make that argument (based on the color of the pumps) so I can blog this great little scene by Jas Nagra on Earth Day. Heh heh.

Happy Earth Day 2008!

Gary McIntire celebrates Earth Day with a little vignette illustrating the joy of recycling:

Just floatin’

Brickshelf user graviton recreated a Dan Piraro comic of LEGO gangsters. “It ain’t workin’, Boss. He’s just floatin’.”

Mike Crowley tenderizes some meat

Mike “Count Blockula” Crowley (Flickr) gives Rocky the old one-two vignette treatment:

Impressive new SNOT technique by ImpreSariO

ImpreSariO recently posted this nice vignette featuring a monkey playing pranks on a bunch of golfers:

But what’s really unique about this vignette is the golf cart, which has a particularly ingenious SNOT (Studs Not on Top) building technique that connects the front wheels to the hood:

As Klocki points out, those are flex-tubes (which even hardcore purists must admit are okay to cut) inserted into the studs. Brilliant!
