LEGO hippies everywhere are going to rejoice at the new LEGO Shop exclusive set revealed officially today, 10220 Volkswagen T1 Camper Van. At over 1,300 pieces and ~~$100~~ $120, it’s a substantial set with an amazing amount of detail and what appears to be lots of interesting parts and construction techniques. (Can you tell I’m excited myself?)

I’m certain that most of our readers have already seen the lower-resolution images of the set from the second Collector’s Guide. The folks at LEGO have finally made their official announcement, though, and we’ve got high resolution photos and a video to show off.

The van has an engine in its engine compartment and a complete interior:

I must admit, when I saw the first images of this set online, I wasn’t impressed. I thought that it looked very boxy, and undetailed. Obviously, the subject matter is somewhat boxy, but seeing the high resolution photos, I see more than I expected. The real appeal of this set turns out to be the interior, though. It opens up in a variety of ways, and looks fun to explore.

LEGO dragon breathes real fire

After building a creation that uses real water, Aaron Amatnieks (akama1_lego) sets out to do what no one has ever done – to use fire in a Lego creation, and I’m not talking about flame pieces. Kids, don’t try this at home!

Lego minifigure customization and decal application video

Jared Burks shows us in video how to do the basics of customizing a minifigure including using Brasso to remove print and applying waterslide decals. He showed this video at Brick Fiesta along with hundreds of custom minifigs. To learn more, check out Jared’s Minifigure Customization book.

One of my favorite moments in Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind is not when Nausicaä fulfills the prophecy but when Obaba retells the legend. Hayao Miyazaki’s poetic lines reverberate through the fortress at the heart of the valley, and they bring chills every time I hear them in Japanese.

But the scene at the end of the movie is no less moving, built here in LEGO by Alex Hui, another top-12 entry for the Ani-Com Hong Kong LEGO contest.

I’m less convinced by the chunky Mehve, but the lit Ohmu tendrils and historical scenes on the side of the display more than make up for it.

Time-lapse video of LEGO mosaic building at LEGOLAND

LEGOLAND California Master Model Maker Ryan Ziegelbauer built a mosaic of a Junior Model Maker contest winner, which he captured in this time-lapse video.

Now that you’ve watched it once, watch the video again for all the funny animations in the background, including an homage to a recent blastoff into space.

The Love Boat captain cruises BrickWorld

Actor Gavin MacLeod, best known as Captain Stubing of The Love Boat, made a stop at Brickworld this year. His purpose? To pay a surprise visit to certified Lego professional, Ryan McNaught, who had built a super-sized replica of the Pacific Princess, the ship used in 1970s tv show.

10221 Super Star Destroyer coming in September 2011

The next UCS Star Wars model to be released is the 10221 Super Star Destroyer, which was unveiled at Brickworld this weekend. For 3,152 pieces, it carries a heavy price tag of $399.99. As a model, it is well-designed and sturdy enough to be swooshed. Its unique minifigs include Dengar, Admiral Piett, and IG-88 with a printed head. You can check out the parts inventory in this photo I took of the instruction manual.

10,000 piece Lego Star Wars Sandcrawler measures over 3 feet long

Hannes Tscharner spent the past 9 months building this truly faithful recreation of the Sandcrawler in Lego. This massive minifig-scale model retains a high-level of details despite its size. The builder goes beyond to add remote-controlled steering and other functions such as a motorized crane and conveyor belt. A fully detailed interior completes this perfect build.

Cars 2 trailer in Lego

Patrick Boivin was commissioned to make the official Cars 2 trailer in Lego, and he did a great job bringing out the personality of the characters through their animated facial features. The rest is some pretty smooth stop-motion action.

Edulyoung’s Pegasus automaton soars on alabaster wings

This pegasus sculpture by Edulyoung is beautiful enough to highlight here, but the Technic pedestal reveals there’s more to this flying LEGO horse than pretty white bricks.

This video of the pegasus in motion quite literally took my breath away.
