The wacky Popcorn Wagon

Those of you who read this blog regularly will have seen tricked out and wacky hot rods by Lino Martins (Lino Martins) before, but few rods are as tricked out, as wacky or as hot as his latest creation: the Popcorn Wagon.

He normally builds his own custom designs, but this is a model of a real-world show rod from the sixties. These things weren’t so much cars (nobody knows whether this one can even drive under its own power); they’re sculptures on wheels. There is something oddly ‘meta’ going on here. Show rods are almost like real-world versions of the sort of vehicles Lino normally builds, which themselves are a kind of sculpture with wheels. Gnarly!

Massive LEGO Tow Truck will get you moving!

This monster Peterbuilt tow truck by LEGO truck master Bricksonwheels looks just about big to move anything. It’s loaded up with chrome and neat details and seems equally ready for some serious towing or a bit of showing off at a car show.

Italian beauties in Denmark

Once every two years, the Danish Ferrari owners club have a meeting in LEGOLAND Billund. Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, the former LEGO CEO and current owner of the LEGO Group, may have something to do with this, as he is known to have a soft spot for these Italian beauties. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of his own cars were present. However, this blog is about LEGO rather than about cars. Fortunately, Stephan Sander, whose movie cars were a major inspiration for my own, combines a passion for the famous cars with the prancing horse with a passion for LEGO.

He was there displaying his impressive collection of LEGO Ferraris, photographed here in front of the LEGOLAND model of the Amalienborg Palace. The collection is built to the 1/20 scale used for LEGOLAND cars and includes models of classic Ferraris such as the ultra-rare 1962 GTO and 1970 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 LeMans. My favourite, however, is his model of the much newer 2009 Ferrari 458 Italia.

I love how he has painstakingly sculpted the vehicle’s extremely curvy shape by using clever combinations of half-stud offsets, curved bricks and slopes (and am more than a little jealous of his collection of rare trans clear elements).

Lublin-51 mobile cinema van & Volvo F89 truck by Karwik

You don’t have to go to a theater to enjoy a movie, as Karwik shows with this lovely rounded truck from the days of black & white cinema.

Much more modern and colorful but no less impressive is Karwik’s Volvo F89 semi-trailer, with fantastic lettering on the cargo container:

Ford Escort Mk1

Here is a vehicle that is sure to please both the hot-weather crowd and studs-out advocates like TBB’s own Wreck-it-Ralph. The builder is Joe Perez, better known as MortalSwordsman, and the car is part of his ongoing Alan Mann Racing Team project. The excellent roll-cage is just one of many details which include the kind of boilerplate car functionality you’ve come to expect and enjoy. The Beauty and the Beast

Remember the Peterbilt big rig built by Jörg (lichtblau)? Perhaps not, but several months ago he built a new version. It is slightly smaller, such that the overall proportions are a better match for how tall minifigures are.

It is a beautifully proportioned model, full of clever details. Take a look at how the roof plates on top of the sleeper cab match up with the curved bricks underneath, for instance. I loved it when I first saw it and I was not alone, because this beauty inspired billyburg to build a beastly Monster Truck version.

He notes that he contacted Jörg before building it. He received nothing but encouragement and mentions that this is what’s great about the Lego community. I couldn’t agree more, especially with a result like this.

1957 Ford Taunus 17M P2 deLuxe by mijasper

Most of the LEGO models by Michael Jasper (mijasper) that we’ve featured here over the years have highlighted minifigs with perfectly scaled tools, furniture, and other brick-built accessories — every one featuring Michael’s brilliant parts usage (far and above merely “nice“). It’s still wonderful to see Michael build something a bit bigger, if only just. This model of a 1957 Ford Taunus certainly doesn’t suffer from immensity, but Michael still manages to pack it full of detail.

The black-and-white color scheme on the car contrasts beautifully with the elderly minifig Michael has included for scale. Of course, no model he builds would be free of NPU — note the brackets in the wheel well and tan windows as seat backs inside the car.

Tiny LEGO RC Routemaster Bus

The Routemaster is almost certainly the most famous bus design in the world. And there have been many built out of LEGO, including this pair by our own Ralph. What makes this one by Gabor Horvarth special is that it manages to pack in full remote control in a very small (6 wide) package. Which I can tell you from my own less successful attempt is an incredible achievement

4-wide 4×4

Raphael Granas (Raphy) is no stranger to building 4-wide LEGO cars. His little builds always give me the urge to zoom something around my desk. If I don’t have any toy cars on hand, I am not opposed to zooming a stapler or a calculator instead. His latest creation not only makes me want to zoom my stapler around vigorously, but it also makes me want to build an off-road track out of the various stationary laying around as well.

We’ve featured countless antique vehicles here on blog, but clever people like Carl are always innovating new and interesting ways to build them, and for all its simplicity, this is one of the nicer ones I’ve seen.
