A good indication of a builder’s talent is that he or she attracts the attention of several of our contributors separately. When I first bookmarked this scene by Rickard and Helen, I hadn’t noticed yet that it was the same team that had built the despots and notables (posted by Carter), the South Park characters (posted by Ralph), or one of the top three BRICKNADO winners chosen by all of us.
It’s actually not unusual for a Town layout at a LEGO convention to have a trailer park on the edge (demonstrating that Town builders do, in fact, have a sense of humor), but it’s rare to see such a lovely trailer or range of amusing detail.

One of the things I respect most in a LEGO builder is the ability to build well in multiple themes or genres. The Titanfall / World War II mashup we posted earlier this month couldn’t be more different from this tranquil scene that Kosmas Santosa posted today.
I actually did a double-take when I saw this photo, since it so closely resembles the beautiful Volkswagen T1 Camper Van released a couple years ago, as well as the micro version available briefly as a freebie. But this one is perfectly scaled for minifigs. The chrome wheels and door handles really make the whole model pop.

Toronto got hit pretty bad last year with an ice storm and destroyed a lot of Toronto’s tree cover, which took weeks to clean up all the poor trees. The only cool part was I got to see a lot of the Toronto Forestry trucks rolling around, which Isaac Mazer (Ricecracker.) was able to recreate with stunning accuracy:
This Freightliner 108SD truck is operated by the City of Toronto’s Department of Forestry, and Isaac has been able to recreate the truck’s distinctive hood – in minifig scale – by shaping an official LEGO eraser!
This truck also has a functional truck bed to dump out trees and a knuckle-boom crane to pick up trees:

There are many, many things that make me exceedingly happy about this creation. The color use. The stunning architecture. The lovely painting that inspired it. The full interior. The fact that Sebastiaan Arts (Aliencat) has posted something magnificent, after a lengthy hiatus.
Also, the fantastical creature doing terrible things on the first floor. That’s definitely a plus. Watch it in motion.

This weekend at The Sydney Brickshow in Australia, LEGO announced the forthcoming Fairground Mixer set. Obviously a followup to 2009’s popular Grand Carousel, the new set features a mobile amusement park ride, complete with trucks to pack the carnival for transportation. It’s been a year or two since I last saw a LEGO version of the Seattle Space Needle, but Erwin te Kortschot’s is worth the wait. Erwin’s version is edged with clean lines, and the disk at the top is about as smoothly pretty as LEGO can make.

Before 1974, LEGO sets were a fairly unpopulated landscape of vacant houses and empty cars. Preceding the iconic minifigure by several years, LEGO released a new kind of figure the year I was born, and some of my first LEGO sets included these figures. Paul Hetherington (Brickbaron) celebrates the 40th birthday of this lesser-known LEGO fig with a lovely double-decker bus.
Paul writes:
I wanted to create a new model that had a distinctly vintage look. My design cues came from some 1970’s Lego trade adverts. I purposely chose a model that used the colors that are incorporated in the Lego logo. In the 1970’s the Lego color palate was limited to yellow, red, blue, white, black, with small amounts of gray and green. On a personal note, I chose the British 1910 B-Type double decker bus because I was born in England and that was were I first came across these figures as a child. As well, if you look at the poster from a distance, red and white are the predominant colors which represents my Canadian upbringing.
