Wicked Wizard Anglia

Why a Wizard needed a car, let alone one that could fly and go invisible, is beyond me. Molly Weasley was surely perplexed when her husband revealed the blue Ford Anglia to her. Though this LEGO model by Builder Greg K doesn’t disappear at the push of a button, it does have plenty of room for two second-year rascals and their luggage in its floating chassis. Built at the scale of the Mini Cooper and the Volkswagen bus, this model features smooth detailing and brick-built ornaments. Since the car floats above the stand thanks to some clear brick supports, there’s room for some scale-accurate trunks and two cages for a rat and an owl.

LEGO Harry Potter 76406 Hungarian Horntail Dragon [Review]

The summer 2022 Harry Potter wave includes one more display-oriented set, 76406 Hungarian Horntail Dragon. This is the third in what seems to be a series of large(er)-scale winged, flapping creature builds from the Harry Potter theme, following Hedwig the owl and Fawkes the phoenix. Of course, those models were of much smaller creatures, closer to 1:2 or 1:4 in scale. This build roughly matches the first two in size, so the scale is much smaller. Here’s our review of the set, which contains 671 pieces and 1 minifigure, and is available now for US $49.99 | CAN $64.99 | UK £44.99.

This set is based on a license The LEGO Group has with the Warner Brothers films, not J.K. Rowling directly. The transphobic views expressed by Rowling do not reflect the values of The Brothers Brick or, indeed, those of The LEGO Group. The magical world Rowling created, in which many who felt a bit different could see themselves, meant a great deal to so many people, including those that Rowling now demeans. TBB affirms each individual LEGO fan’s choice to claim a piece of the world for themselves, or to reject it entirely.

The battle of the seven Potholes

Whenever one thinks of LEGO Harry Potter creations, there is quite a lot that comes to mind. Diagon Alley, Gringrotts, Grimmauld Place, Pivet Drive, Hogsmeade and of course Hogwarts. All of them are houses and castles. What does not pop to mind immediately is wild chases through traffic and yet it is that which inspired Alex Lam.

We are looking at a scene from ‘The Battle of the seven Potters’. The members of the Order of the Phoenix are trying to transport Harry from one location to the next. Unfortunately they were ambushed by Death Eaters. In the battle Harry and Hagrid fled on a flying motorcycle. In Alex’s creation we can see Hagrid and Harry trying out all sorts of manoeuvres to get away from the Death Eaters chasing them. Alex quite often adds lighting to his creations which always looks mesmerising. Same goes for this lovely build.

“Ernie, two double-deckers at twelve o’clock!”

We’ve seen a few versions of the Knight Bus from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban in LEGO sets. However they all fail to replicate one of its most memorable tricks – distorting itself to squeeze between two London buses. Having done my fair share of rush hour cycling in London, I can confirm that this is no mean feat, and to be fair it’s quite hard to replicate in LEGO form. But that hasn’t stopped LEGO Instagrammer Gilderoy Blockhart from having a crack at it! There aren’t many LEGO pieces in purple (in fact a lot of them have come from Knight Bus sets), so this can’t have been easy. He’s even captured it mid-squeeze, going from six studs wide to a mere two at the front. And all this while still being able to fit Harry Potter himself – and some lights – in at the back! That really is magic.

A bathroom to put all bathrooms to shame

As much as I love the LEGO Harry Potter sets I have to admit one thing. The scale they are built in does not lend itself to adding the amount of details I’d love to see. LEGO fan creations however never stop to amaze me. One of these creations is Moaning Myrtle by Caleb Schilling. Caleb built the prefects’ bathroom from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. The use of the white half round tiles to add marble details to the bathtub wall looks splendid. It is also nice to see the Fabuland flask being used in a modern day creation. It is a bit bigger than minifigure scale but it works perfectly in this setting. Using old school lace fences to create the stained glass windows is a really nice touch. I love how the light appears to be peeking through all the trans clear plates.
