It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Yes, it’s the holiday season, but it’s also the return of our annual LEGO advent calendar extravaganza. We’ll be opening our calendar windows every day in the run-up to Christmas. Our team will also share their thoughts, comments, observations and jokes about each day’s builds. Naturally, you are also welcome to do so in the comments, dear reader!
We have five advent calendars this year, across the City, Friends, Star Wars, Marvel (specifically Guardians of the Galaxy) and Harry Potter themes. Let’s get right into it and see what’s hiding behind the doors of day 1, shall we?
The Friends calendar kicks things off with a bespectacled minidoll. In LEGO City, we get a police chopper.
On the licensed side of things, Star Wars gives us a Republic Gunship, while we get Peter “Starlord” Quill out of the Marvel calendar. Harry Potter gives us a miniature of a Diagon Alley storefront – presumably Olivander’s Wand Emporium, which plays a significant role in the first movie.
But what do my esteemed colleagues make of these builds?
Kyle: Because 2022’s advent calendar was the perfect time to add Star Lord’s rocket boots to the fig?
Chris: OK, I get what they’re going for with the rocket boots and I’m not sure what a better solution would be using existing elements, but those are super clunky and look awful. That little gunship is awesome though, as is Olivander’s.
Friends and City are both… Fine. A minidoll with no accessories isn’t exactly the most compelling way to kick off the calendar. The helicopter is nice enough.
Bart: Sometimes LEGO gives you one step to add bricks to a build, this time they give you a bag of little parts and expect you to build Olivander’s.
Daniel: Olivander’s took me a moment to spot… First I thought of the Hall of Prophecies. The gunship is top notch. I agree that a minidoll is a lame first day.
CJ: I’m not a HP fan, so I thought that was a fancy coffee display cart at first. The gunship is recognisable, but Peter’s go-go boots are hideous. Much prefer the leggings on the Friends minidoll in terms of style.
Ben: I think we can all agree they’re terrible. Even mounting the skates on the calf holes would be a solid improvement here.
Star Wars and HP start with a great opening salvo. Begun, the calendar war has…
So a pretty unanimous thumbs down for Peter Quill’s choice of footwear, but a steady start otherwise! We’ll be back tomorrow and every day up to Christmas Eve, so do check in to open your calendar with us!
Still waiting for Amazon to deliver my City one, ordered it back on 10/30/22
