Escape the infection

Andrew Colunga shows that the black fantasy virus is capable of infecting an entire planet, and now the last survivors are desperate to escape the doomed planet in the last remaining spacecraft. Oh the horror!

If you’re wondering why there’s been an abundance of horror action on the blog over the weekend, you should check out the conclusion of Keith’s You Control the Action Contest, ending tonight. Don’t forget to come back tomorrow to cast your vote for the crowd’s favorite award.

Jumper crafts Phobos and Deimos

My latest space creation goes small for SCI-LUG‘s recently ended Small Starfighter contest. Like several of the entrants, I’ve come up with a transforming design that capitalizes on the symmetrical quality of the bubble cockpit to include the third form of an atmospheric flight configuration.

What astonds me the most is the explosive magnitude of the participation in this contest that drew 84 entries. See for yourself in these three pages of well-done creations.

Steampunk Roundup

There’s been a barrel-full of quality Steampunk creations lately. Many are entries in the Agents of the Imperial Crown contest, but some aren’t. It doesn’t matter, they are all awesome!

Shenanigans at Everfrost Mountain Brewery

Following our suggestions over the last few days, reader -greenglo- sent us a reminder that we’d missed his awesome Colossal Castle Contest VI entry titled “Everfrost Mountain Brewery”:

There are lots of great details to check out on Flickr, including detailed shots of the great green Ogre with light-up eye, but the 2-second video is what caught my attention:

Belatedly, via Gizmodo.

And a quick production note: Josh is an administrator at Classic-Castle.com, and therefore a judge for this contest. In general, he’s avoided potential conflict of interest by not blogging CCC6 entries. The rest of us here at TBB should’ve done a better job of covering for him, but a few great Castle creations have fallen through the cracks.

A train contest no less

Baldwin contest banner

I started a little building challenge for trainheads (and those that might want to have a go) and Peter Norman donated a prize so it became a contest. An interesting aspect of train building in LEGO is that it’s one of the few areas where a number of people work from the same or similar prototypes. For these challenges I decided to take this one step further and get everyone to work from exactly the same source material.

The rules are in the flickr trains group but I’ve copied them here for those who don’t use flickr.

This time we can all build a US diesel switcher: a Baldwin AS-616 as it comes in a variety of liveries. I found a nice side-view projection and there’s a flickr group dedicated to Baldwin’s.

Peter Norman has graciously donated a prize to the first challenge so there will be judging. The winner will receive a very valuable Lego train related item. Peter, I and possibly a third judge will decide the winner based on no fixed criteria. There will not be a rankings system.

* The deadline for entries is February 28, 2009. Deisgns must not have appeared in public before the 1st January 2009.

* To enter the contest provide a small link to the image in the flickr thread using the [FLICKR-URL] technique (copy the URL for the model’s flickr page and surround it by square brackets). If you are not a flickr member email a direct link to a 240px wide version of your entry to me and a link to more pics and I will enter for you.

* The Challenge is open to 6, 7, or 8 wide, powered or not. All entries must be able to at least navigate Lego train track.

* Entries may be in CAD format but the file must be available for inspection and must be deemed to be buildable by me to be eligible for the contest. Similarly non-LEGO components may be used but it is best to be aware of the judges’ prejudices.

If you have any questions just post them here but read through all the text first.

Steampunk contest on Flickr

Flickr’s LEGO Steampunk group is hosting a contest to build steampunk variations of the LEGO Agents theme. You can create a steampunked version of any Agents vehicle or set and even free build your own. The contest runs from January 1st to February 28th. Check out the details and prizes here.

GO MINIMAN GO Video Contest winners announced [News]

Jesus Diaz has just announced winners in the Gizmodo GO MINIMAN GO Video Contest. Head on over to check out the top five entries, including the winning brick-flick by David Boddy:

For those of you wondering when we’ll announce winners in our own GO MINIMAN GO Photo Contest, we’re almost there! Look for an announcement here shortly. In the meantime, watch all the great videos over on Gizmodo, and peruse nearly a hundred entries in the GO MINIMAN GO Photo Contest pool on Flickr.

I’m the one holding up the judging for our contest. Unexpected travel for work, the holidays, and getting sick haven’t helped. Sorry! I’m not procrastinating, really.

Entry form now open for the Colossal Castle Contest VI [News]

Classic-Castle.com was having a few technical difficulties, but they’ve now been resolved and the Colossal Castle Contest VI entry form is now open.

Not to discourage anybody from entering, but my money’s on Tom Snellen:

Announcing the FBTB Star Wars Christmasification contest [News]

FBTB announces a much overdue Star Wars contest since their previous popular Steam Wars contest almost a year ago. Nevertheless, the new contest looks to be an exciting one, where participants must add a touch of the holidays into a Star Wars vehicle or build a vignette that blends both themes.

The contest ends on December 20th and there are prizes for first and second place winners in both categories. Check out more details here and start building! Do or do not, there is no try ;)
