2018 LEGO Advent Calendars, Day 1

It’s that time of year again! Break out the hot cocoa and stoke the fire, because The Brothers Brick is counting down to Christmas the only way we know how: with LEGO Advent Calendars! Each day, we’ll reveal the three mini-builds from the LEGO Star Wars, LEGO Friends, and LEGO City 2018 advent calendars along with commentary from our team.

If you’re opening one (or more) of these advent calendars along with us, we’ve made sure the pictures and commentary on each day’s models will be behind a jump so we don’t accidentally ruin the surprise. So without further adieu, here we go!

LEGO Star Wars Darth Vader’s Castle now available with exclusive Christmas Carousel gift with purchase [News]

December has arrived and with it a handful of new LEGO sets including Darth Vader’s Castle from Star Wars and the global launch of a new wave of Spider-Man sets. 75251 Darth Vader’s Castle was previously available for pre-orders from Amazon.com, but is now generally available from LEGO for $129.99 in the US, $149.99 in Canada, and £119.99 in the UK.

Along with the new sets, LEGO is offering another exclusive holiday gift with purchase: 40293 Christmas Carousel. The set features a rotating carousel on a festive base and comes with 251 pieces. To set is available with purchases more than $99 through December 10th or while supplies last.

A peaceful winter village with a unique Christmas tree

What do you do when you get your hands on a giant pile of white ornamental fence pieces? Build an extravagant winter village of course! At least, that’s what builder Joe Gan did. The lovely white houses definitely make this picture zoom-worthy, but my favorite part is the giant purple Christmas tree. The color choice, in addition to the other accents throughout, make for an eye-catching build.

Snow’s up, dude!

“Dashing through the snow, on a rocket powered board. O’er the slopes he’ll go, with his elven horde. Jingle build! Jingle build! Jingle all the way! LEGO 7‘s clever Santa makes us shout ‘Hooray!'”

With the singing out of the way, I love this unconventional portrayal of old Saint Nick. Santa’s pose captures the spirit of snowboarding, right down to the jumper plate representing his mouth shouting “woo!” His white beard flowing in the wind conveys a sense of speed.

Busy in Santa’s workshop... [Video]

Now that we’re closing in on December, it’s time to release the Christmas builds! I’ve been anxiously anticipating another seasonal kinetic sculpture by Jason Allemann, and he hasn’t disappointed.

These elves at their workbench are cute enough alone, but of course, there’s more! Jason’s latest creation uses a nifty mechanism to give it an assembly line feel.

Presents you must have, my young padawan

The Grinch isn’t the only strange green creature you’ll meet this festive season, Koen Zwanenburg would have us believe that Father Christmas is in fact a Jedi master, Yoda no less! Bizarrely it makes perfect sense — clearly, it would take a high-level Force user to achieve Santa’s intergalactic delivery schedule. There is also a sly nod to the commercial success of the Star Wars franchise: in a clever reversal of roles, Yoda carries a LEGO minifigure Luke on his back, ready to fill someone’s Christmas stocking.

And I quote, “Stink. Stank. Stunk!” Dr. Seuss’s vile villain who stole Christmas, and his trusty dog, Max, come to us in LEGO form! This awful (lovely) model of Mr. Grinch by Miro Dudas is simply terrible (awesome)! In seriousness, this is one of my most favorite builds in recent history. Miro’s wonderfully expressive recreation is remarkably close to the latest version of the character in the new 2018 movie, The Grinch.

LEGO BrickHeadz 40274 Mr. and Mrs. Claus [Review]

With the current amount of seasonal LEGO sets, it’s absolutely impossible not to add a LEGO model to your holiday home decorations. And when the trendy BrickHeadz figures meet the holidays, some of the sweetest and most adorable sets are born. LEGO BrickHeadz 40274 Mr. & Mrs. Claus is the fifth seasonal BrickHeadz set, and the only double-pack of the sub-theme. The set consists of 341 pieces, which makes it the third largest LEGO BrickHeadz set so far. This is possible thanks to a ton of decorations that the figures come with, but let’s take a closer look at the designs of Mr. and Mrs. Claus themselves as well…

LEGO Christmas Holiday BrickHeadz revealed as 40274 Mr. and Mrs. Claus; 40272 Halloween Witch now available [News]

Today LEGO has unveiled a special pair of Christmas holiday BrickHeadz, 40274 Mr. and Mrs. Claus. The cheery duo are dressed in red and surrounded by holiday decorations, including presents and a Christmas Tree for good ol’ Santa, and fresh-baked cookies and a wreath for Mrs. Claus. The set is a two-pack, and it will be available Oct. 1 for $19.99 USD. The set has 341 pieces.

The Christmas set follows the special autumn holiday sets of 40272 Halloween Witch, available today, and 40273 Thanksgiving Turkey, available beginning Oct. 1.

853663 LEGO Iconic Holiday Magnet [Review]

Each year LEGO reveals new ideas for holiday ornaments, and this time it’s an adorable 853663 LEGO Iconic Holiday Magnet consisting just of 45 pieces. The set is offered for $9.99/€6,99, and the reason for it to be a little bit pricey is a pair of modified bricks with magnets — somewhat peculiar pieces in uncommon color. At the same time, colours are what make this build a very pretty thing to decorate one’s dwelling with.

A gingerbread house for those on a diet

If you still want to make a gingerbread house before the holiday season officially ends, Jonas Kramm has perhaps the smallest way to make one that’s still loaded with details. He’s created this minuscule candy home with some very clever parts usage. Red crowbars for candy canes, tooth pieces for the frosting piping, and just enough coloured studs to represent whatever kind of sweets you can imagine.

Then one sandy Christmas eve, Yoda came to say, Bantha with your nose so brown, won’t you guide my sleigh to town!

I always enjoy making a Christmas-themed build when the season comes around, and having built a Santa’s arrival scene last year that would be hard to top (even if I do say so myself), I wanted to do something a bit different and more fun this year. I’ve had those minifigures from the LEGO Star Wars advent calendars sitting on top of my shelf for quite a while, so this was the perfect chance to put one of them to use. Plus I’ve always wanted to build a Bantha.
