We love builds with character! Creating characters from LEGO elements, whether traditional System bricks or using elements from Bionicle and Constraction themes, is an amazing way to showcase your building skills. Brining out emotion and personality in bricks is an art!

I’d rather be a pig than a fascist

One of my favorite Miyazaki characters is Porco Rosso, and we’ve seen many LEGO versions of Porco’s iconic red plane before. But this character portrait of the gruff pig himself, in all his metaphor and charm, is something special. It’s no surprise that it comes from the hand of Eero Okkonen, whose fantastic brick characters regularly grace our blog.

A swell sellsword swine

Here to break up your boar-dom and your castle, this pillaging pig by 彥碩陳 is a perfect pairing of adorable and menacing. The Bionicle spiked armor is a great choice for a stiff white mane, and the sculpting of the hog’s face is fantastic.

The world could use more LEGO Overwatch heroes

A couple contributors here at The Brothers Brick couldn’t resist the trend of building Overwatch heroes started with D.Va, Tracer, and Zenyatta. First we have TBB’s own Simon Liu flexing his mecha building talents with the nature-loving death machine Bastion.

Adela the mystique beauty

High heels, white evening gloves, a red corset with black laces, a dark red cushion and an intriguing posture… This must be the exact definition of a goddess. Eero Okkonen sculpted the most thrilling character out of a handful of bricks and we are left to admire his talent and her beauty.

Raining adorable death from above

Whether it’s from dropping pesky Spiny Eggs to slow your progress on World 4-1, fishing your kart out of the water on Banshee Boardwalk, or carrying the third-person camera though Peach’s Castle, Super Mario Bros players will recognize this LEGO Lakitu built by Cecilie Fritzvold. Some clever use of parts make Cecilie’s Lakitu come to life, like the mudguard piece for the cloud’s smile and a rubber band around Lakitu’s eyes for his goggles.

The human element

No doubt, World War II has had an enormous impact on modern society and culture, from cinema, books, art and even LEGO creations. Behind dozens of amazingly precise scale models of aircraft, tanks and ships there still hide just a handful of touching scenes telling stories of ordinary people who had to fight for our freedom. One of them is this powerful work by Dmitriy and Anna.

Builder Olga Rodionova also contributes with her heartwarming scene of a young girl meeting her beloved as he is returning home from the war. I don’t think this scene needs any description; the poses created by Olga say more than any words can. Also, the birch in the background is something I have never seen before – such a brilliant texture!

LEGO Overwatch characters Tracer and Zenyatta

It seems I can’t go a single day without either seeing an Overwatch commercial or hearing a friend gush about how it’s the only game I should be playing right now. So it shouldn’t be surprising that LEGO builds inspired by this first-person shooter are popping up like crazy. In addition to the massively, massive Rocket Hammer and D.Va’s hot pink Mech we’ve already highlighted, here are some fantastic LEGO Overwatch characters.

First up, Tim Schwalfenberg pieced together a LEGO Tracer, the female character who, according to the internet, can control the speed of her own passage through time. Pretty handy, that. I recognized Tim’s build right away as the English-accented character who says “The cavalry’s here” in those too-often shown Overwatch commercials.

Next up, Dead Frog inc. built a LEGO Zenyatta, the floating character with the power to heal others. While I didn’t recognize this character (Seriously, I promise to play the game at some point), I did appreciate this character’s clean lines and cross-legged pose. Both builders captured the game’s style and built highly-poseable figs resulting in two LEGO models that look like they were built as part of one set. I’m excited to see which other characters pop up online in the future.

The Horned King

Considering the fact that Disney has been producing great films for decades, it’s easy to forget some of their lesser praised work. The Black Cauldron was not a successful film, commercially or critically, but it does hold the distinction of including one of Disney’s scariest villains: the Horned King. Jordan Schwartz has revived the Horned King with this fabulous bust, complete with glowing eyes and official LEGO fur in the form of a Duplo bearskin rug.

Seeking to conquer the world with the aid of the magical cauldron, this no-joke monster was exceptionally terrifying from his first to his last scenes (his *spoiler* death in the film is one of Disney’s most gruesome). This is one king you don’t want to mess with!

Swimming in gold with Scrooge McDuck

As a kid, I absolutely loved Duck Tales and Scrooge McDuck. Despite his miserly ways, Mr. Scrooge was always so much fun to watch. At any rate, his grand-newphews seemed to adore him so I guess there’s that.

Sweetsha brings us a lovely model of Mr. Scrooge swimming through his stockpiles of gold, and it’s a timely creation: Alan Young, who lent his voice to many iconic roles like Mr. Ed and Mr. Scrooge himself, passed away earlier in May at the age of 96.

Ultron’s Throne

Supervillains rarely succeed, and for good reason. The minute they kill off their eternal foes, the story ends – which is why it’s so great to actually see them win! Cid Hsiao shows us one of those rare bloody victories in the form of Ultron’s throne. Here the devious robot Ultron can laugh from atop the broken corpses of the Avengers and intimidate any would-be challengers – assuming he hasn’t yet also destroyed the world, that is.

What the hell are you?

I always felt distant to series such as Bionicle and Hero Factory as they didn’t really demonstrate an actual LEGO experience for me. Same goes for the recent Buildable Figure or “constraction” series. Nevertheless, Jonas skillfully manages to show us how useful these specific parts can be for certain occasions. The armor on iconic film character Predator definetely requires a different touch and many Hero Factory parts came to the aid. Such perfect presentation in this small scale would be impossible otherwise.

The Yautja hunter is easily recognizable with his dreadlock hair, plasma caster, wrist blades, body mesh, and bone necklace, all enhanced by a strong and ready-to-fight stance. But I wish Jonas could complete the scene with an Alien to relieve my stress — it feels like a prey without the presence of an opposing monster!

Fighting for your rights and the old Red White and Blue

Long before Elektra and Black Widow, there was Princess Diana of Themyscira, better known as Wonder Woman. She was created in the 40s and started out fighting Axis military forces, before taking on gods from Greek mythology. A television icon in the late 70s, she’s finally getting her own movie in 2017. And why not? She’s awesome! So is this poseable figurine from Victor. The model uses a mix of Technic parts, System bricks, and Bionicle armor to create layers of texture which strike a perfect balance of toughness and femininity. The builder has chosen to arm her with a sword and shield instead of the better-known Lasso of Truth, but he has included a scale model of her Invisible Jet.
