We love builds with character! Creating characters from LEGO elements, whether traditional System bricks or using elements from Bionicle and Constraction themes, is an amazing way to showcase your building skills. Brining out emotion and personality in bricks is an art!

Go Gundam or go bust!

It only took less than two days for Eugene Tan to build this from a conceptual Lego Digital Design (LDD) file to a finished bust. Even if one isn’t a huge follower of the anime series you can tell that this is an excellent build with intricate details finished with an excellent base moulded to the headpiece. It’s particularly nice to see details around the neck area where it seemed like this headpiece was ripped out from its torso just for this display.

A closer look also shows how lighting has been integrated into the lens of the Gundam RX-O Unicorn.

Bad guy versus good cop with these LEGO characters and their cool cars

The embodiment of a mobster character is captured perfectly by Martin Redfern. Cigar, check. Tommy Gun, check. Gangster pose, check. To top it all off, the elements used for the suit for shaping makes it look like it was tailored by a master — although I suspect that may be a Sharpie-branded tie.

The accompanying cruiser is screaming out ‘mobster vehicle’ all over too! Styled in black with red highlights and chrome headlights.

And of course, when there is bad, there must be good to balance it all out.

The truth about Ewoks: Tiny terrors that we need to be afraid of

Ewoks have been misunderstood big time! Sure they’re cute and cuddly, but did anyone stop to consider how they nearly roasted Han, Luke, and Chewbacca for a scrumptious meal? Chi Hsin Wei captures three buddies debating where their next dinner might be coming from. Those beady black eyes are quite appropriate with the modified black lever elements and the minifigure scale of C-3PO fits perfectly as a plush toy.

Beware the brunt of a grunt

I seriously don’t know what this is, but it definitely looks like a grunt that you’d want to stay away from. Builder Leonid An must have had an inspiring day to be able to dream up of this one – someone must have made him quite cross indeed. I did notice Grunt has a great choice of clothing! I wonder where he does his shopping or did Mrs. Grunt go for sewing lessons?

When made out of LEGO bricks you are, look as good, you will not, hmmm?

Large LEGO sculptures made out of mostly regular bricks are most commonly created by LEGO itself for promotional displays, but fan builders sometimes make their own too. Felix Jaensch has done just that with this great rendition of Yoda, which instantly reminds us of the old 7194 Yoda UCS set.

There’s a lot of good shaping here, especially because a large percent of the character is a robe, which you can see better in this shot of Yoda’s back.

Classic LEGO Star Wars battle droids are making a big comeback

Ever since LEGO created a larger brick build of a minfigure in 76051 Super Hero Airport Battle, I’ve been waiting for the community to do more with the idea. Chungpo Cheng has finally answered my wishes not once but twice with this pair of Star Wars droids. Yes, if you scrolled too fast or didn’t look closely enough, these aren’t just the two official “minifigures” from LEGO, they’re larger builds that expertly copy the proportions of their source material.

A different kind of deathwish

If you are granted a wish by Death itself, does that count as a deathwish? Even though it probably does not by definition, The Tale of the Three Brothers sub-story in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows does indeed (spoilers!) end in death. Aaron Newman Has taken inspiration from this story to build this symbolic recreation.

The landscape is just enough to represent the setting, with the focus on the composition and the large figure of Death. Using monochromatic expressionless minifigures is always a sure way to shift the viewer’s attention to the symbolism and the thought behind the build, and Aaron has used this to full effect. Death itself is especially imposing, as it should be. The few features that can be recognized through its black cape are amazing, most notably the teeth that are made using dark gray clips, carefully shadowed to look like fangs. This is not the only presentation trick to bring out the most from this build; take a look at the minifig in the center, which has been partially photoshopped to appear as though it is really wearing a cloak of invisibility.

One of a kind bounty hunter on a bike: DC’s Lobo

This astounding creation by Shawn Snyder has Bounty Hunter Lobo mounted on his spacehog reclining in his signature pose. Much larger than it seems, this creation stands 30 inches long, 18 inches wide and nearly as tall. Both Lobo’s eyes and his space hog’s skull light up with Power Functions.

A tale of two Hulkbusters (and a Hulk)

The Hulkbuster: Ultron Edition that was released not very long ago gives everyone the potential to be a Tony Stark. However, both versions featured today just might make the official Hulkbuster set look a lot less menacing. They’re distinctly different builds of this monster machine, yet side-by-side they’re remarkably similar at a glance. Interestingly, both are significantly more poseable than the official version.

LEGO BrickHeadz 41597 Go Brick Me customization kit [Review]

We first brought you the news about the LEGO BrickHeadz 41597 Go Brick Me customization kit at Toy Fair in New York last month. It was clear from the parts selection and packaging that LEGO intends builders to create a broad range of characters from the set, which includes 708 pieces for $29.99 (and will be available on April 1st but is starting to show up in the wild already).

This set is an utterly unique LEGO set, remarkable in many ways. We purchased a couple early copies of the set from a major US retailer, and we spent an entertaining evening building avatars of ourselves and a diverse cast of interesting characters. Let’s dig in and see what’s so different about this LEGO set.

Which raven do you choose?

Most of us are familiar with princesses kissing frogs in fairytales to save their beloved from a curse, but this build by Revan New introduced me to a different, unique story, in which the girl is tasked by a sorcerer to guess her lover amongst four of the sorcerer’s apprentices, turned into ravens.

The creation is not a perfectly “realistic” recreation of the fairytale scene, as Revan adds expressive, artistic accents to the build. The snow on the edges of the beautifully constructed walls seems to have little logical relation to the scene itself, instead capturing the atmosphere and emotional aspects of the story. A few splashes of brown help to break up the build colour-wise without making it inapropriately cheerful, and the window is especially well integrated into the wall. The figures are well built too, with great details like the sorcerer’s boots and belt buckle, but most importantly, they are very expressive.

Avast Ye Brick-aneers!

If you’re looking for a scurvy mate to fill your pillaging needs, here be the fellow! He’ll stand guard with his cleverly crafted musket, making sure your enemies walk the plank! The creator of this “maniac gunner pirate” is LEGO 7, and he’s no stranger to great builds. One of the best parts of this particular creation is the unique personality of the character. Not only does he have that wonderful classic pirate look, he also has the best expression on his face. Not to mention, his weapons display a uniquely creative use of parts.

And if you’re looking for a captain to add to your crew, you won’t be disappointed! LEGO 7 has also created a devilish Blackbeard to go with this first mate! He even has the peg-leg and macaw!
