Sam’s Club bans Brendan Powell Smith’s Brick Bible + TBB mini-review [News]

In news that should surprise nobody, Arkansas-based warehouse store Sam’s Club (Walmart’s version of Costco) has pulled copies of Brendan Powell Smith‘s new book The Brick Bible from its shelves, citing the book’s “mature content.” Walmart and Sam’s Club have a long history of corporate censorship (yes, that link is from 1997!), but it’s sad to see them throw their weight around against one of our own.

CNET News has the details, and Bruce over at GodBricks has an excellent opinion piece that approaches the issue from a religious perspective.

Brendan’s publisher Skyhorse sent The Brothers Brick a copy of The Brick Bible a while ago, and I finally found the time to sit down with it over Thanksgiving. The book is a large-format paperback, like a graphic novel. Some of the photos are a bit dark and/or grainy, but given that they span ten years of digital photography, I suspect the lower-quality ones are the earliest (the ones I know are his most recent all show off Brendan’s stellar presentation skills).

In terms of subject matter, The Brick Bible is no more a children’s book than the Bible. In that sense, Sam’s Club isn’t wrong — yes, indeed, the Bible is rampant with “mature content.” And Brendan’s version doesn’t shirk from the difficult stories compiled by the Deuteronomist in books like Judges that rarely make the sanitized Sunday School curriculum. Yes, Brendan’s LEGO version of the Levite and his concubine (Judges 20) is tough to read, but so is the original. Don’t like the way Brandon shows God repeatedly making the Israelites stone their neighbors who’ve committed minor sins (a la the Taliban)? Too bad, it’s in the Bible. Think it’s a bit odd that God and Satan use Job as a plaything in their cosmic game? Read the book.

The Torments of Job

Oddly, though, The Brick Bible is just as thought-provoking and works just as well regardless of your religious or philosophical persuasion (as Bruce says). For the non-religious, the book confirms why some of us have set aside the belief system illustrated so well in Brendan’s book. For believers, The Brick Bible is an accurate (if incomplete) representation of the Old Testament. If your belief doesn’t come through stronger after seeing exactly what’s in the source material, don’t blame Brendan Powell Smith. But for all of you out there reading this (presumably LEGO fans) who might not see yourself so clearly on one side or the other of the religious divide, it’s a great collection of LEGO art with interesting building techniques and (generally) excellent LEGO photography.

My recommendation? Buy it. I’ll give you three reasons: First, because it’s a rip-roaring read that has all the crazy shenanigans in the ancient original. Second, to show support for a fellow member of the LEGO building community. Third, because buying this banned book makes a statement about corporate censorship in the face of the likes of Sam’s Club/Walmart. Sure, most of us live in countries where our governments don’t have the right to censor the art and literature we choose to consume, but corporations do have ever-increasing power over what we can and can’t read, watch, or listen to. I’d love to hear about a campaign to have the Bible banned from Sam’s Club on exactly the same grounds they used to ban Brendon’s illustrated LEGO Bible. Think of the children! Anyway, buy the book. Don’t let Sam’s Club/Walmart win.

Just click to donate to Toys for Tots – and win fabulous prizes!

LEGO is running a charity toy drive this year at LEGOSantaYoda.com. All you have to do is send an e-greeting and LEGO will donate a toy to Toys for Tots. You can send as many e-cards as you want, and LEGO donate a toy for every message you send.

To make things less annoying for your friends and relations, our compatriots over at FBTB have set up a special e-mail account where you can send the messages.

LEGO Santa Yoda

Here’s how it works:

  1. Go to LEGOSantaYoda.com
  2. Select a greeting card.
  3. Fill in the form with your name and email address. Enter FBTB for recipient and giveaways@fbtb.net as the address. Enter a message of “For the Tots!”
  4. Hit send.
  5. Hit the back button on your browser.
  6. The information you entered should still be there. Hit send again!
  7. Go to step 5

FBTB assures us that every message will be opened so that it counts, and LEGO says that they’ll honor every message sent to this FBTB address. I’d love to see the LEGO fan community get together and collectively enable a million donated toys this holiday season!

But wait, there’s more! LEGO fan sites are also putting up fabulous prizes, not least of which is every single promotional LEGO Star Wars minifigure ever released (donated by FBTB).

LEGO LUGBULK program for 2012 now open [News]

The LEGO Group created the LUGBULK program a couple of years ago to enable LEGO clubs and LUGs to purchase LEGO for use in collaborative displays. It’s a great opportunity to purchase large quantities of LEGO at much lower cost than Pick-a-Brick or BrickLink.

Here are the basic rules:

  • The LUG need min. 10 members (please tell us the member figure of your LUG)
  • The LUG need to feature at least 2 public displays a year (always the events from the previous year count so please send dates and links to pictures of your 2 biggest public events from 2011)
  • The LUG need to exist for at least 1 year (please tell us [TLG, not TBB. -ed] the founding date)
  • The LUG need to have an official website (please send us the link – Facebook, flicker or other social media WEB sites will not be accepted)
  • The LUG need to have at least a 1 page description of the LUG and the activities on the website (please send us the link to that page)
  • Send the Master Data Sheet and the list that you fulfill the above mentioned requirements to the LEGO LUGBULK Team at lugbulk@LEGO.com no later than the 15th of January 2012 (The required information need to be send by every LUG whether the LUG has already participated before in the program or not!)

Full details (including the templates mentioned above) should already have been distributed within your LUG, but if not, leave a comment here and we can send them to you, or you can contact TLG at the e-mail address above.

Christmas gets off to a LEGO start with 38-foot tree at St. Pancras in London

LEGO Certified Professional Duncan Titmarsh of Bright Bricks (who was also involved in building James May’s LEGO house) recently led a project to create what is likely the world’s tallest LEGO Christmas tree at London’s St. Pancras train station.

LEGO Christmas tree

Standing 38 feet (12 m) tall and built from 600,000 bricks, you can see the tree in person on the lower concourse at St. Pancras through January 2.

Thanks to all the readers who sent us links about this.

Brickvention 2012: Jan 21-22 Melbourne [News]

Registration for Brickvention 2012 and tickets for the public days are now open. The 2012 event will be held in the same place as the 2011 event (Melbourne Town Hall) with public days on the 21st-22nd January 2012 and a registered attendees only day on the 20th (with setup on the 19th).

As ever I expect this event to be heaps of fun. Last year’s event was huge and if past growth continues we can expect this year’s to be even bigger. I’m sure details of collaborative events will be announced closer to the time so keep an eye on the website for future announcements.

DCP_3943The timing makes BV 2012 a bit closer to Australia Day this year so if you’re coming from interstate or overseas try booking your accomodation sooner rather than later.

Please note that this year a new system is in place for registration. And especially note that a pre-purchased ticket will be required to attend the public days. This is to ease waiting times for those attending.

To become a registered attendee able to attend all days and display your models:

Follow this link to the Brickvention 2012 registration page at TryBooking
http://www.trybooking.com/ZYA

Registered memberships cost $60 (plus booking fee).
Make sure you bring along your printed tickets to the event.

Due to venue size, there are only 150 registrations available. The first 50 people who register will be entered into a special competition organised by LEGO Australia.

If you want to just check out the displayed models on the weekend:

Saturday 21st and Sunday the 22nd from 9.30am – 5.30pm are the Public Expo days, allowing the general public of all ages to watch LEGO® builders at work and view LEGO® creations and displays.

You will need to pre-purchase tickets for this display.

Adults – $10 (plus booking fee)
Children – $6 (plus booking fee)

Children under 3 are free

You can purchase tickets at TryBooking

Make sure you bring along your printed tickets to the event!

And if you don’t know where and when it is:

The next Brickvention will be held over the weekend of 21st and 22nd January 2012 at The Melbourne Town Hall, corner of Swanston and Collins Streets Melbourne Victoria, where anyone can come along and view the amazing creations made out of LEGO.

And don’t forget that you can pick up a free LEGO Star Wars ARF Trooper with the code 4TBB (US) or TBBO (CA).

UPDATE 1: The LEGO Shop team have informed us that the checkout system has experienced a problem recently while applying the promotional code, preventing the ARF Trooper from being added visibly to the the shopping cart at checkout. ARF Trooper supplies have not run out, and they are correctly being included in your orders.

Update 2: For those of you like me who noticed last night that the second of two Christmas vignettes was available for purchase at $10, this was also an inventory/website mistake. It will be available for free with orders over $99 during Black Friday weekend next week.

TBB registration & commenting issues resolved (we think...)

Important: This is not the raffle post! Leave your raffle entry comments on Win LEGO Super Hero minifigs early, not here.

———

LEGO TBB VignetteWe’ve heard from readers anecdotally that some of you have had trouble registering or leaving comments. Unfortunately, the reported numbers were low enough, and we just never had enough info to get to the root of the problem until recently, so weren’t able to fix it. As it turns out, there were a few related issues that all contributed to the problem.

First, some Internet service providers only allow inbound email from domains on a “whitelist.” If you’ve registered here on Brothers-Brick.com using the email address provided by your ISP, such as t-online.de or comcast.net, or if you have your own custom domain that you’ve used to register, email — including the registration confirmation message — from us may get blocked. There’s nothing TBB can do about this, but there’s something you can do. Please try registering again with an email address from a free webmail service, such as Hotmail, Gmail, or Yahoo! Mail. If you use your ISP mail as your primary email account (or don’t have a webmail account), you can always set up the webmail to automatically redirect all messages to your regular address.

Second, many of you haven’t been able to change your auto-assigned passwords after you registered. We fixed this one a while ago.

Finally, those of you using Internet Explorer 9 have been unable to comment at all. I’m contractually obligated to say that this is our old code’s fault, not IE9’s. ;-) We’ve also fixed this.

We’re still going to keep the registration requirement for leaving comments, but we hope we’ve at least eliminated the bugs enough to enable those of you who’ve encountered any of these three issues to start leaving comments again. Thanks for your patience!

I have a WordPress.com account. Why can’t I leave a comment here on TBB?

Although Brothers-Brick.com runs on WordPress software, the WordPress.com registration system is completely separate from any “self-hosted” instances of WordPress. You’ll need to specifically register here on Brothers-Brick.com to leave a comment on a TBB post.

I left a comment a while ago but it still hasn’t shown up. What’s going on?

First-time commenters are moderated to make sure they’re not spammers. One of our administrators needs to look at the comments from any first-time commenter and approve them. Any future comments after that will appear immediately. We’re not online 24 hours a day, so there may sometimes be a delay in moderating first-time comments.
