Mindstorms Cyclops Robot Controlled by Exo-Suit

Danny Benedettelli builds robots using Mindstorms, and has been doing it for quite some time. He contributed models for EV3, when that was released, including this playable electric guitar. Today, we’re focusing on his robot Cyclops.

Now, granted, it looks like Cyclops has been around for a while, but it’s new to us, and I’ll hazard a guess it’s new for a lot of you, too.

Massive 5-foot LEGO model of USS Kitty Hawk

This 1:200 scale model of the USS Kitty Hawk isn’t the first large-scale LEGO ship model Matt Bace has built, but it just might be his best yet. While his model of the USS Missouri is impressive at over 4 feet in length, the Kitty Hawk dwarfs it, coming at 5 feet, 3 inches long, and boasts an astonishing complement of aircraft, with over 40 helicopters, fighter jets, and support aircraft adorning its flight deck. This model was built digitally, but anyone who doubts the skill and time required by a model like this has clearly never built a large, detailed digital model.

Classic Space Tri-Fighters

I’m a sucker for starfighter spaceships, and this beauty by Mitch (Gamma Raay) is simply amazing:

You might recognize the Mitch’s name, but probably not associated with Space ships. Mitch usually builds bionicle, which we’ve featured multiple times. This time Mitch has integrated Bionicle pieces seamlessly into this wonderful build. I love how everything just comes together at very unusual angles for a LEGO build, and his attention to shaping and using pieces seemingly designed just for the purpose makes this a thoroughly well throughout and executed build.

And like all good starfighters, it looks great an any angle, including the top:

Snoopy vs the Red Baron

In the nick of time, a hero arose…and I’m not apologizing for the 1960s ear worm. Miro Dudas has given us what we never knew we needed: Snoopy in his warbird. The Sopwith Camel itself is fantastic, and the addition of Snoopy as pilot just tugs at nostalgia.

Classy Cars for Classy Gents

This might be an older model, but this adorable early design from Jordan Schwartz just has to be shared. The car’s got such an elegant design, with those lovely lines and most excellent grill.

And should you be interested, Jordan’s also got some delightful older vehicles for you to enjoy. Or in which to avoid government officials. Depends on your needs.

Count down to SHIPtember

It’s almost time for one of the craziest build theme months: SHIPtember.

Starting September 1st, builders have exactly one month to build a S.H.I.P or Seriously Huge Investment in Parts (or Time for some of the people with larger collections). Each SHIP build must be 100 studs or more (in any orientation). Though for people with school or other ‘real life matters’ there’s PRE-SHIPtember which allows you to start earlier, but you’re bound to the same one month rule.

Last year there were over 100 SHIPs that were built:

So start clearing off your social calenders, clean up your build areas, make those bricklink orders (or don’t if you’re confident) and get ready for some SHIPs!

… Though in previous years, there’s quite the anxious bunch that want to get started and have to wait weeks before September rolls around … feel free to take a stab at the Brick Separator challenge:

Rules are simple, just build something with those pesky brick separators! I know that’ll keep me busy till SHIPtember….

Crashed LEGO Star Destroyer from Star Wars Episode VII

I’m not ashamed to say that I’m incredibly excited for Star Wars Episode VII. The trailer is filled with amazing shots and locales, not least of which is that haunting panning shot of the crashed Star Destroyer on the planet Jakku. LEGO builder KevFett2011 was also struck by the imagery, and he’s turned out this fantastic diorama of the dune-swept spaceship.

EXTERMINATE: This LEGO Dalek is coming for you!

EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE! This LEGO version of Doctor Who’s infamous villains, the Daleks, looks creepily accurate. I almost thought creator Matt De Lanoy’s version was made of cardboard, plastic, and a toilet plunger, like the show’s originals. Don’t forget that official Doctor Who LEGO is now a thing you can buy, with the Doctor making an appearance in LEGO Dimensions!

Raising the Bar(bell) of LEGO creations

OK, so I admit I mostly just wanted to make a cheesy pun in the title, but Matt De Lanoy is currently engaged in another round of Iron Builder, that contest where two excellent builders are pitted against each other and every creation must contain one or more of a specific piece. Matt’s opponent is Tim Schwalfenberg, whose brilliant creation is featured in the previous post about the Isles of Aura. The seed part, as my title cleverly alludes, is the barbell. Here are a few of Matt’s sweet builds so far:

Models inspired by music: The Isles of Aura

Most LEGO builders draw inspiration from history, movies, books, concept art, and their own imaginations. But for several years now, a talented group of builders has been toying with the idea of a new medium for inspiration: music. We’ve highlighted their Symphony of Construction several times. A new collaboration shares roots and some builders with the Symphony, though this time the builders are constructing a common world around a rousing set of music by Ian Spacek.

Be sure to check out the full gallery of images, as the Isles are populated with a great number of lovely little vessels and majestic structures by a host of brilliant builders.

Half-Moon Mill from Skyrim

It’s been a couple of years since I set aside The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim to play something else — maybe to acknowledge real life after a couple hundred hours — but I always appreciated the wide-open gameplay and incredibly detailed world. Pieter Dennison has recreated one very tiny corner of this massive world with this fairly substantial diorama.

The organic landscaping contrasts nicely with the stonework and wooden mill. (Must resist urge to look for Nirnroot…)

Adorable chibi Bantha stomps straight into your heart

Letranger Absurde doesn’t just build amazing microscale Moai, he’s also quite the talented builder at several scales of LEGO models. One of my favorites is this super-cute “chibi” bantha. Just look at those lips!

Yes, yes, this was posted back in May. I don’t care — I wasn’t around back then, and I’m now correcting this rather egregious oversight by my compatriots.
