Fly the friendly skies of Poland with mrutek, as he adds two more birds to his burgeoning Polish Air Force squadron.

The Lublin RXIV was a close reconnaissance plane or samolot towarzyszący produced from 1932-1938. Many variants were produced, including combat models.

According to the builder, the PZL-104 Wilga (Golden Oriole) is a Polish STOL Civil Aviation utility aircraft. The Wilga design evolved significantly during its continuous production run from 1962 to 2006.

LEGO unveils gigantic new LEGO Star Wars 10236 Ewok Village set

I got the press packet for this last night, with an embargo until 5am today, because the new LEGO Star Wars set 10236 Ewok Village was unveiled at an event in the Czech Republic this morning. Time zones are a pain, but I’d say this set was worth waiting to take a look at!

This set really captures the feel of the Ewok Village from Return of the Jedi, from the massive tress to the raised walkways. It’d also translate well for dioramas of Kashyyyk, and really anything else with trees. There appear to be play-features galore, and a brick-built rope bridge that’s detailed enough to make any adult builder proud. It also appears to have about a million minifigs, if you’re into that…

Meet me down at the railroad station.

Lee Young (edguy20) brings us back down to earth with this lovely and simply titled railroad station. There are other photos that show the building in its totality but this one seemed the most cinematic and I’m all about the cinematic. There is a wealth of detail to absorb if you have a moment or two to linger on a model that doesn’t have bristling weapons or spiny protrusions.

4-Course Microscale Space Dinner

Trying to get a table at the TBB brasserie on a Friday night/Saturday morning with no reservations is unheard of, but you constant reader have enough juice to get past the stuffy maître d’. Please take a look at the wine list, your server will be with you shortly. Tonight’s menu is prix fixe.

The first course is an appetizer by chef Red Spacecat, the Viper Gauntlet RVR04…

…followed by Chef Tim Goddard’s (Rogue Bantha) TBX shuttle…

…followed by Chef Tim Zarki’s (Spook) main course the Metis Class Rapid Transport…

…and the meal is capped off by renowned pâtissier Karf Oohlu’s and his Turtle class highspeed cruiser.

Kristof A. (legoalbert) claims he was inspired by the Beatnik car designs and the Wacky Racers cartoon. The first thing that came to my mind was the Beatnick Bandit, one of the famous original “Sweet 16” Hotwheels. Kristof calls his ride an “h.rr Ikûso concept,“, I call it one sweet ride.

Friday Night Fights (Round 7)

Welcome back fight fans, to Sin City Nevada for another eye-gouging edition of Friday Night Fights! Tonight’s bout is all about a veteran’s quest for redemption and newcomer who doesn’t mind getting dirty. Let’s go to the tale of the tape:

Fighting out of the red corner…with a FNF record of zero wins and one loss…from the Badger State…Brian (mondayn00dle) Kescenovitz and his “Salvage Bot.”

And fighting out of the blue corner…from parts unknown…Hugebricks and his “Drossel”.

As usual, constant reader, you are tasked with deciding the outcome of this pugilistic endeavor by way of comment. On the last edition of Friday Night Fights, Pate-keetongu won a decisive 4-1 victory over his hapless opponent.

Col. Strong Vincent marches to Gettysburg

Okay, just one more — I couldn’t pass up the beautiful landscaping in this scene by Gary the Procrastinator, who managed to finish his diorama well in advance of the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. Gary has depicted Col. Strong Vincent leading the 3rd Brigade, 1st Division of the V Corps of the Army of the Potomac in an overnight march to the decisive battle that would place the Union Army on the road to victory. Strong was mortally wounded defending Little Round Top during the battle.

Gary built this as part of a collaborative display for BrickFair Virginia this summer.

Tiny tank chaser

Before I hand things over to Keith for the weekend, I think I owe our readers a somewhat more adorable chaser to follow all the super-serious discussions about LEGO and the military this week. This “MK45-Toad” is brought to you by Eero Okkonen (Pate-keetongu).

The use of binoculars for the tank treads is brilliant, and even the minifig includes some interesting part combinations, like the modern/space visor on the LEGO Castle helmet.

R-Types: Saving the best for last.

With nearly 70 entries in the R-Type & Beyond Build Challenge I think it is a safe bet that the month was a huge success. There was a brilliant diversity of designs and scales, yet all entries were totally reminiscent of the R-Type style. However, it appears that a few builders were saving some lovely surprises for the last day…

Curtis Collins builds, in my opinion, the most ‘classic’ looking model of the month, and his spray painted canopy and use of a toy ball commandeered from his son for the Force Pod are just the sort of creative twists we love to see in the Starfighters group.

Stefan Schindler is no stranger to starfighters with beautiful angles, but his R-Type Ampulex definitely wins this month for coolest colour scheme.

Simone also builds a classic looking R-Type with wonderful lines, but this time in midi-scale.

So thanks to all who participated, it was very great to see such great quality builds throughout the entire month. Keep an eye out at the flickr group for future monthly build challenges.

Hunkering down atop Amon Sûl

Jonas (Legopard), this month’s cover photo artist on our Facebook page, has just posted a beautiful rendition of Weathertop from The Lord of the Rings. Jonas says he wanted to “improve my skills in Rock-Building and also try my hands on a bigger ruin.” I’d say he succeeded rather nicely.

The campsite looks a little underpopulated in the main photo above, but there’s action aplenty on the summit as Strider battles the Ringwraiths.

My latest starfighter features some hard-to-find medium green bricks and my current favorite part: the pink alien pod. I’m happy with the way it turned out, and hopefully you’ll agree that it indeed has an alien look to it.
