Science Fact vs Science Fiction

I admit. I couldn’t decide which of the two I wanted to blog, so I went with both. Ryan (eldeeem) posted two amazing space creations recently, and they demand to be seen.

Let’s to with science fiction first. Ryan posted the latest addition to the Starfighter Telephone game with his contribution, the Nata V.II:

I just can’t say no to those curves and colors.

For science fact, Ryan’s posted this stunning commission for the University of Colorado Boulder. According to the description, this will be on display mid-September. The build features the Apollo 11 service module, nicknamed Columbia. This module, commanded by Neil Armstrong, brought he and fellow crewmates Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin to the moon 45 years ago this past July.

So. Here’s the question: Science Fact or Science Fiction? Which is your favorite?

We Can Do It!

I built a factory diorama for my T-47 Sheridan walking tank a few weeks ago. Of course, as the style of the build is alternate WWII, the workers in the factory are all female. As it’s Labor Day here in the US, it seemed like the perfect day to post this diorama, and celebrate the achievements of the American worker.

Small business

LEGO’s Cafe Corner sets evoke a world of historic multi-story architecture and fine European living. So where are the sets that folks on Main Street can relate to? Well, eyescream54 has provided the solution, just in time for Labor Day…

First up is this donut shack, complete with super-enthusiastic shopkeeper, fully loaded fryer, and a brick-built sign that’s probably big enough to be seen from space.

Not sure if that race car belongs to the shopkeeper – maybe that’s why he looks so happy!

Next we have an authentic pizzeria, with authentic brick oven, and authentic Italian owner…

And finally, this totally tubular surf shop, complete with surfer dudes waxing their boards..

Fingers crossed that this builder’s next creation is an Irish pub!

Fuel up and head to the wilds

This vignette by Brick Vader uses bold techniques to create an intricate scene. I’m not sure if the garage will collapse if I lay a finger on it, but it looks good in the photo.

A feast for the eyes

As popular as LEGO’s Mixels line has become, I must admit to me they are just great “parts packs”. And now I have more eyeball bricks than I know what to do with! But it’s heartening to see how these new parts seem to have stimulated a minor surge in character-based builds since the line’s introduction back in March.

Case in point: Serbian builder Djordje uses them to great effect in this recreation of Goofy, everyone’s favorite …erm, what the heck is he again?

Friday Night Fights – Devil in the architecture Details

Welcome back fight fans, to Sin City Nevada for another round of Friday Night Fights. Tonight we’re going to go straight into the details! Sometimes it’s too easy to get overwhelmed and build big and boring, the key is layer in the details while building big. Let’s go to the tale of the tape.

As usual, constant reader, you are tasked with deciding, by way of comment, which of these beautiful builds will win the battle. Classic Space with a cup of Lava

I’m a big fan of collaborative builds, there’s nothing like working with fellow builders in creating something bigger than yourself. And at Brick Expo down in Australia, three builders: Josh (I Scream Clone), Rod (intrastella), and Mark (Bricktron) came together and created a classic space layout that is just out of this world:

Not ones to be satisfied with just one theme, these musketeers were able to fuse Classic Space, M:Tron, and Blacktron (monorail!):

And if you look really hard, you’ll even spot an LEGO’s recent nod to classic space, the infamous Exo-Suit:

The Temple of Mithras

Dan Harris (macsen_wledig) has built a temple with this magnificent mosaic as the center point. He’s also provided interesting history related to the obscure Roman god whose temple he chose to build. 1:16 scale LEGO locomotive is over a meter long

Better known for super-accurate scale model motorcycles and trucks, Dutch builder Bricksonwheels has decided to try his hand at a train. And not surprisingly, the result is spectacular – and also huge!

At 1.31m in length, this model EMD SD40-2 freight locomotive required months of building and approximately 20,000 bricks to complete. It was built at 1:16 scale …which I suppose technically puts it in the “rideable” 3/4 inch scale Live Steam gauge! It will also be featured in an upcoming book on LEGO scale model building by No Starch Press.

Back to school

The summer vacation is drawing to an end, and kids in the US are now drifting back to school. It’s such a magical time of year …for us parents! This vignette by Ted Andes celebrates the new school year by turning a couple of high school stereotypes on their head…

Classic Space Dream Catcher

This funky classic space themed ship by David Roberts is breaking molds with its interesting design. Check out the gallery on MOCpages for photos of the ship set against different spacey backgrounds.

Panda-moneum in Hong Kong

Bizarre conservationist flash-mob movement 1600 Pandas recently visited famous landmarks in Hong Kong, and local builder Alanboar Cheung decided to commemorate the event with this panda-enriched model of the Tian Tan Buddha. If you ask me, the pandas totally look like they’re gonna eat those tourists!
