Cam M. built himself a nifty little stand to hold his iPhone so that he can actually steer while playing car racing games. Cam utilized a Smallworks Brickcase to attach the phone, but it would still be possible to do something like this without such a case. I think I may have just found myself a project for this weekend.

The Palpatine’s Shrink-O-Matic contest over at FBTB comes to a close at midnight PST tonight. One of my favourite entries that I have stumbled across is this Naboo Starfighter by Bartosz Sasiński (bartosza6m (War-C)). The construction of the cockpit is absolutely brilliant, and the sleek shaping is spot on. Plus the display stand really adds a nice final polish.
Flickr user Garry_rocks has been churning out an endless supply of stunning mecha and hardsuit designs ever since he joined in November. I tend to overlook strictly virtual creations more than I probably should, and Garry reinforces that I should pay closer to attention to LEGO Digitial Designer (LDD) models more often. The fact that he creates these models without being able to hold the bricks impresses me even further, when I build it is always by trial & error and just generally fiddling with the pieces. If you haven’t already, you must take some time to browse through Garry’s stream. It is guaranteed to inspire all the mecha and sci-fi builders out there.
Garry has a total knack for creating fantastic cockpit designs at a relatively small scale…trust me when I say that I have been making notes.
If you are familiar with Mike Yoder at all, then you know that he not only builds a mean LEGO spaceship, but he is also a gifted painter. Well Mike certainly has proven both of these points with his latest project…an acrylic on canvas painting of his Calamity Jane starship.
I don’t recall a spaceship ever looking so beautiful.
I made mention in my post of Peter’s mecha that I really appreciate all the great minifig head designs that LEGO has been putting out. Well that sentiment can be taken one step further with respect to minifig parts in general. And I can’t think of anyone that makes that any more obvious than Hammerstein NWC.
I know some people tend to look down on fig-only creations, but I think minifigs can be great fun to fiddle with, and also challenging to come up with unique combinations. By mixing and matching the vast assortment of both official minifig pieces and the odd third-party accessory, he truly creates some fantastic characters with a tonne of personality. I am always impressed by the unique choices he makes. I have told him that he needs to build vehicles to go along with them, but even if he doesn’t listen to me, I am still happy to look at just the figs.
Perhaps I have missed them, but I am surprised that we have not seen more creations made for the Space Marine Collectible Minifigure.
But Peter Morris (peterlmorris) has done it in spades with his Rapid Reaction Force. The SM-41 Mauler mech is a more heavily armed variant of his previous Futuron Strategic Pursuer Mk II. Not only does the mech add some firepower to his squad, but he also outfitted the figs with some extra pew-pew. I also must give props to LEGO for giving us so many unique sci-fi heads over the years…as a result there is a lot of added personality in Peter’s squad, and that is very cool!
Kyle Collard (Lazer Blade) says that he built this wonderful little drone in 10 minutes…I wish I was that efficient! The unique shape and rockin’ colour scheme really make this ship pop. Well played Mr. Collard, well played!
Eight months ago I built a spaceship and my son Tate decided that the pilot should be my wife Trish. I thought that sounded like a nice idea, and since I didn’t want any family member to feel left out I decided to build one for each of us. I built both my son Milo’s, and mine within the following two weeks. I even did a substantial upgrade on Trish’s in the meantime. But considering Tate came up with the idea, the poor little guy had to wait eight whole months for his very own. (I am such a horrible father :P)
So to reward his patience, I tried to go all out on his. As a result I built quite possibly the craziest vessel to ever come out of the .Tromas Shipyards. He ended up with not only a rockin’ starfighter, but it converts to a mecha as well.
I am still trying to talk them all in to taking a family swoosh-portrait, but in the meantime…
I also just realized that I am going to have to build another ship for our bambino that is due in March…a father’s work is never done :)
…because it is too big to fit out the door.
Ryan McNaught has built quite possibly the coolest helicopter ever to be created with LEGO. His Erickson Air-Crane “Elvis” has been created with over 100,000 LEGO elements, and was built in only a month! Those of you lucky enough to be attending Brickvention will be able to see it in person this weekend.

I watched My Neighbour Totoro for the first time just after Christmas. I wish I had seen it years ago, because it was absolutely wonderful. So seeing legorobo:waka’s model of the iconic Catbus was right up my alley! I love the somewhat simplified/blocky style…and that smile is just spot on!
But the coolest feature is definitely the movement:

Andrew Lee (onosendai2600) took the classic Town racing set 6395 and applied a liberal amount of GARC to it. The result is the most delicious group of space raceships I have ever laid eyes on.
Andrew built 4 very distinctive and unique ships to represent the different cars from the set. Each one is awesome in it’s own right, and I am finding it very hard to pick my favourite. But I am going to have to choose the blue one, if for no other reason than it has an Ice Planet 2002 tile.

Eric Druon (baronsat) has created a wonderful rendition of Robby the Robot from Forbidden Planet. The use of the inside-out tires for the legs and arms works so well…and the greebly details are wonderful too!
