Valentine’s Day was yesterday, but we couldn’t pass on highlighting this amazing LEGO portrait of a silhouetted couple built by Letranger Absurde. Look closely, because while those black shapes with smoothly curving edges may look simple, they’re actually a complicated conglomeration of plates and slopes facing all directions. The creation is also much larger than it appears at first glance, standing around two feet tall.

It’s Valentine’s today, and what better way to celebrate than with a bit of LEGO love, in the form of a an over-eager minifigure Cupid shooting heart tiles at random passersby?
The custom prints in this model are terrific, from the emotive expressions on the figures to the little hearts tiles. Interestingly, the Fabuland and Rebrick torsos are original.
Berthil van Beek loves making some of the coolest LEGO machines around. Just a few week ago we highlighted his awesome LEGO ball maze that accelerates balls to 1,000 rpm, and he’s already back having spent more than 100 hours designing another breathtaking creation. This time, it’s an undulating wave of LEGO colors featuring 38 distinct swatches from LEGO’s palette (a palette that’s changing over the years).
Like Berthil’s ball maze, this mechanism is designed to fit with the Great Ball Contraption standard, fitting end-to-end with other fans’ creations for continual movement of LEGO’s tiny soccer balls and basketballs. Berthill tells us he was inspired to create the rainbow wave machine after seeing the vibrant rainbow of colors in the official image of LEGO’s Creator XXXL Box, which he also used a source for many of the colored bricks.
The Rainbow Wave Great Ball Contraption uses about 1,150 pieces and is powered by a single motor, with each of the colored pistons sitting on an 8-tooth gear. Each piston’s gear is exactly 1 tooth offset from its neighbors, and this means the balls travel in a perfectly level line as they move across the waving surface. Berthil says this mechanism took a lot of testing and redesigning to perfect, in particular because digital prototyping with LEGO rendering programs isn’t feasible for complicated moving machinery.
A few days ago we reviewed the first four LEGO BrickHeadz characters, all from The LEGO Batman Movie. Today we’re moving on to the second four characters in BrickHeadz Series 1, the Marvel characters. We get Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow, and The Hulk. Like all the BrickHeadz, they will retail for $9.99 USD, and they’re available beginning Feb. 15 for LEGO VIP-card holders both in LEGO stores and from the LEGO Shop Online.
As we mentioned in our last review, each of the characters’ boxes are numbered for Series 1, with the DC characters being 1-4, the Marvel characters 5-8, and the Disney characters 11-12. The back of the Disney character boxes reveal what the missing two characters are, but LEGO has asked us not to show them yet, although images are available elsewhere.
The LEGO Batman Movie opens today and we enjoyed it, though not without a few reservations (read our review). LEGO is naturally pulling out all the stops to advertise the film, and that includes giving away free Batman minifigures and now, revealing a brand new set. Today we get our first look at 70917 The Ultimate Batmobile, which is a huge vehicle that splits into four smaller vehicles: the Batmobile, Batwing, Bat-Tank, and Batcycle.
The Ultimate Batmobile will be available June 1 for $129.99 USD. It also includes a light-up Batsignal, and Batman, Robin, Batgirl, Polka-Dot Man on a flying disc, Alfred Pennyworth (in Batsuit), the Wicked Witch of the West, and two Flying Monkeys. We didn’t spot this vehicle in the movie, but let us know in the comments if you do!

The LEGO Batman Movie comes out today, and to celebrate LEGO is giving away two more ridiculous costumes for Batman. The set, 30607 Disco Batman/Tears of Batman is available free with the purchases $75 of more in LEGO stores and the LEGO Shop Online. The promo begins today, Feb. 10, and runs through Feb. 28 or while supplies last. LEGO is also giving away posters of various characters from The LEGO Batman Movie with orders.
Disco Batman includes an exclusive torso print, while the pearl gold Bat-cowl and flashy two-tone cape are only available otherwise in the huge Batcave Break-in set. The Tears of Batman minifigure will net you an exclusive red Bat-cowl and green cape. Of course, the torso is also exclusive.
We loved what we saw when we got our first look at LEGO’s new BrickHeadz theme, but how do they stack up in the brick? The LEGO BrickHeadz will be available to LEGO VIP-card holders in LEGO stores and the LEGO Shop Online beginning Feb. 15, and they’ll retail for $9.99 USD each.

I spent many hours as a kid playing 1994’s amazing vertical scrolling flight shooter Raptor: Call of the Shadows on MS-DOS, so I instantly recognized this scene by Havoc. It’s a brilliant game for its age, with an upgradeable ship and damage that has to be repaired between missions. I love that Havoc has built the entire interface into the model, including the health bar on the right side, and that explosion which looks perfectly retro.
I hadn’t thought about this game in 20 years, but I decided to look it up again after seeing this fantastic creation and was elated—and more than a bit surprised—to discover it’s not only available on Steam but can be played for free in a browser. Guess what I just spent the last half hour doing?
Finally, builder Havoc has even recreated the pixel art from the cover.
Everyone has a different process for building. Some people start with a piece of reference art they find inspiring, or a drawing they’ve made. Some people start with a technique, or a combination of parts and just keeping adding pieces until something takes shape, which is the route I took in designing this small starfighter, which I call the Wyvern.
I knew I wanted to build something dark green, so I sat down with the dark green bin and looked for interesting elements. What I found were a surprising number of minifigure chairs, so I began stacking them. Continue reading

LEGO and Warner Bros. today announced several upcoming expansions to LEGO Dimensions, adding to the growing pantheon of licenses the video game envelops. The new packs will include characters from The Goonies, Harry Potter, and LEGO’s own Chase McCain. The new packs will be available in May. New packs are also available Feb. 10, including a Batman Movie Story Pack to coincide with the The LEGO Batman Movie, an Excalibur Batman, and Knight Rider.
