Make your own MaK – fresh off the sprue

Surely even the most die-hard LEGO builder has also dabbled in model kits? Who hasn’t spent time pruning the parts off a sprue and reaching for the glue? Builder Andreas Lenander takes some inspiration from Peter Reid’s Turtle Robot kit and gives us the opportunity to put together a little hardsuit inspired by the Maschinen Krieger universe. This creations is totally appropriate for MaK, as the theme originally came about as a collaboration by “kitbashers” — modellers who would customise plastic kits into near-future creations.

Confundo, Crucio, Deletrius!

First introduced by TBB’s very own Iain Heath, the Rejectz are back in magical style with these new figures by Mel Finelli. Everybody loves Rejectz because they’re the “ugdorable” alternative to Brickheadz. This special line-up just for Potterheads features Harry Pooper, Herwhynie, Ron Weeeweee and Dumbledaft.

Honey, I blew up the figs!

As a minifigure collector myself, I’ve seen many ways fans display them for the perfect showcase. This build from Letranger Absurde takes the cake! At a glance, it almost seems like an optical illusion with the realistic-looking furniture, making the figures appear larger than life. Or perhaps the minifigures used were their larger LEGO clock counterparts? It’s such a nice scene it took me a moment to notice some of the cool details, including the micro-sized AT-AT and Slave-1.

Cruise around the galaxy in sleek style

Spaceships can come in all shapes and sizes, and this build by Inthert manages to capture an unusual form with brilliant brickwork. Its organic shape makes it stand out — a beautifully curved structure, something challenging to achieve in LEGO. The key in making a great spaceship model is making one believe what it can potentially do. What sells this is not only its aerodynamic shape and the depth of functional-looking details, but enough bulk and build around the engines that it genuinely feels like it could have sufficient thrust to make warp speed.

The side profile certainly gives you a sense of how curved and elegant the model looks…

Set course for sunset, sailing amongst the clouds

Builder James Zhan calls this a Steampunk Airship, but it’s unlike others we’ve seen before. The steampunk style can sometimes be little more than an overlay of anachronistic technology, but this creation is stronger than that. It feels like a realistic flying pirate ship — if that’s possible!

James has a crew of Dwarven engineers for this craft, which perhaps explains the chunky solid feel of the machinery on display. A side view reveals the interesting cutaway section at the ship’s centre, giving a good view of the technical gubbins which serves to keep the vessel aloft.

David Beckham receives a set of LEGO Stadiums for teams he’s played for during his career

What do you do when you hear of a famous Celebrity Fan of LEGO coming to town? You find out where he’s heading and you build him something that he would be delighted to have, and that’s what a few friends from Seoul, South Korea did when they found out the legendary David Beckham was coming to town. Led by Brian Yu the BrickMaster LUG recreated five iconic football stadiums that are homes for five clubs Beckham had played for during his professional career.

Set shields to maximum! Incoming unidentified battlecruiser!

Extending to a length of 125 studs — or for better scale, the length of 4 LEGO modular buildings — this battlecruiser dubbed the Basilisk was designed and built by Pico van Grootveld, and it’s a thing of stunning beauty. The belt frame built in yellow gives it a sturdy and unique texturing for a spaceship’s body. The army green all over makes it feel like it’s a tank-class battleship not to be messed with, especially with the menacing looking fins — or spikes shall I say!

Flying in an alternate bubble of reality

If you’re a fan of the sci-fi film Oblivion, you should recognize this unique bubble ship piloted by Tom Cruise. Builder Marcin Otreba constructed a worthy replica of the vehicle sparing no expense for details and function. He did a good job capturing the visual styles of the movie into LEGO brick form. It is said that the ship was inspired by the Bell 47 helicopters of today.

Marcin did slightly modify the design to fit a single passenger to provide details from the actual movie ship.

LEGO wedding cake proves that you can indeed have your cake, but you can’t eat it

It’s not often you see a build that you want to take a bite out of. But especially for this LEGO wedding cake, I’d think twice about my pearly whites before I took a mouthful. LEGO chef Handoko Setyawan brick-baked a LEGO cake for dear friends who clearly are fans of both Harry Potter and a galaxy far far away. The icing on this cake is not what is outside, but a hidden showcase of a diorama showcasing the couple’s favorite movies.

Let’s go on a wild goose chase! [Video]

Jason and Kristal from JK Brickworks have a knack for making LEGO builds come alive with movement. To celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday recently, they’ve built the Canadian goose! The mother goose is a remote-controlled motorized build with a string to pull along her little goslings. The result is a very realistic family creating havoc at your command!

I don’t want to spoil all the fun in how it’s all put together, but you certainly do want to watch the video feature.

Hyperspace is making me dizzy!

SHIPtember is in the air, which means you get the best of the best (space)ships from the LEGO fan community being churned out all month long. You could almost smell the fumes from the fuel of competition out there. This elegantly elongated wingspan of a build by lokiloki29 is aesthetically pleasing in shape, and almost looks like an orbital satellite of sorts. Thinking of ships, I’m starting to wonder why I see more space(ships) instead of actual floating ships of the sea.

Possibly the most hated droid in the galaxy

The newest character that’s going to go down in history very soon-ish is so predictable, and yet full of mystery and anticipation. We all know BB-8 for his very unique squeaks that brings the droid to life and give him so much character. It was recently revealed that BB-9E has a nickname on set — the new First Order droid is better known as BB-H8 (BB-“Hate”). This build by Kevin Wanner was modeled very closely to the recently released 75187 BB-8, and one can only imagine how much evil-er a droid can be in a galaxy far far away.
