Featured builder: Dark-Alamez

We normally focus on only the most recent LEGO creations, but from time to time I run across a builder whose work I hadn’t taken notice of before (despite Josh posting Dark’s bazaar), and that I have to share regardless of when it was posted. Such is the case with Russian builder Dark-Alamez.

Brick Town Talk recently featured this Chicago scene, complete with a portable compressor and checkered taxi cab.

Chicago style

But I was transfixed by the next photo over, which combines simple details like the bedroll on the horse’s saddle in the foreground with a forced-perspective microscale castle in the background to create a wonderfully layered scene that tells a touching story.

The Return

Dark’s more recent ghost town features a collapsing shack and weathered chapel, with exactly the sort of rundown equipment you’d see lying around in parts of Northern California.

Ultimately, what caught my attention about Dark-Alamez is the variety of what he builds — not all in one style or theme. Check out all of Dark-Alamez’s LEGO models in his photostream on Flickr and Brickshelf gallery.

Shawn’s LEGO Predator hunts you invisibly

Shawn Snyder has been building a variety of Predator head sculptures for a couple of years, but when he brought an early version of his latest to a SEALUG meeting a few months back, I knew it was going to become my favorite. The completed sculpture was worth the wait, and even better than I imagined.

LEGO Predator bust

Expanding on his fearsome Predator head design, Shawn incorporates brick-built skulls, bones, and body armor to complete the look.

I’m quite sure there’s a joke about land wars.

Though to be fair, I suppose someone of (reported) short stature and something to prove to his wife might consider Russia a relatively easy target.

Regardless, my impression from TheBrickAvenger‘s creation is that it was bloody, miserable, and cold and generally not a good day for Eylau.

Fabulous job.

A little bit of every LEGO

“This build features a bit of everything: modulex, duplo , fabuland and regular system bricks”… that really says enough about Pierre E Fieschi’s Sobani Battleship. Well almost enough, it’s also beautiful.

Western Trainset

Western Train

In the past I’ve designed and made instructions for a Wild West playset as Christmas gifts to the community. This year the Spaghetti Western contest at Eurobricks encouraged me to build one for myself. I wanted it to look like a cool toy train that a kid might get for Christmas or a birthday. Hopefully I achieved what I set out to do.

Release the Lego Kraken!

Lego.Skrytsson‘s depiction of the Kraken does it great justice. The teeth is just wow.

It’s not over until the reasonably proportioned minifig lady sings

That old cliché doesn’t really work when minifigs are all shaped the same. Anyway, this operatic scene by Seth Christie includes a great backdrop, complete with curtains and a viking ship.

Viking Opera

Although I prefer Bizet and Puccini, I certainly appreciate the Wagner reference, as well as inspiration taken from classical music in general.
