BrickMania M4A3 Sherman Tank custom kit now available for pre-order [News]

Dan Siskind of BrickMania has just announced that his next custom kit is available for pre-order — the M4A3(76)W VVSS Sherman Tank.

I’d never bought any custom LEGO kits from somebody else, but I bought two of Dan’s kits a few months ago.

I couldn’t have been more pleased. They’re well-designed, interesting to build (well, except maybe the tank treads, heh heh), and a lot of fun to see how another LEGO builder solves interior structure problems you’d never see in a photo.

Though the printed instructions for the two kits I ordered were $10 more expensive, I found them harder to read than the electronic version on a CD.

If you’re reading this, you probably have a computer, so I recommend taking the cheaper, more legible route.

What Stanisław Skalski did on the first day of the September Campaign

Ciamek (Piglet) has incorporated his Polish PZL P.11c fighter into an interesting diorama that tells a fascinating story.

Stanisław Skalski was a Polish fighter ace during World War II, credited with 18-22 victories over Axis forces. Escaping to the UK after the Nazi/Soviet invasion of Poland, Skalski later even commanded an RAF squadron.

Iron Mountain Legion Tank

I’ve been talking with some friends lately about building a joint post-apocalyptic diorama. I started thinking about various factions that could do battle in the wastelands, and came up with several ideas. One was the Iron Mountain Legion.

The Iron Mountain Legion is intended to be the remnants or descendants of an elite military unit that was sealed away in a bunker (Iron Mountain) during the war. They emerge to wreak havoc from time to time.

Goofy back-story aside, this is my first completed attempt at building a tank. It turned out rather, oddly, if you ask me. It seems almost cartoony. While that wasn’t what I set out to do, I think it’s interesting. It also successfully includes four-wheel steering, which I’m happy about.

I’m definitely looking for feedback on this one, so let me know what you think.

This rusty grenade by Victor Vitale is da bomb. No, really, it is! The color scheme really works well and using a keychain ring is very clever. My question is whether a rusty grenade more or less safe than a new shiny one?

Ciamek’s PZL P.11c defends the skies of Poland against Nazi invasion

Ciamoslaw Ciamek gets a head start on commemorations for the 70th anniversary of the September Campaign (the invasion of Poland by both Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union) with a Polish PZL P.11c fighter.

The PZL P.11.c has the distinction of being the first Allied plane to shoot down Axis aircraft during World War II. Unfortunately, the Polish air force’s outdated P.11s were quickly overwhelmed by the Luftwaffe. Only one PZL P.11 survives today.

Flying high

It would appear that both Ralph Savelsberg and I have been busy building aeroplanes this weekend. I assure our loyal readers that this was a total coincidence and not a cunning ploy on my behalf to cut down on the number of blog posts.

Ralph has added to his military collection with a BAE Sea Harrier for a presentation with Ed Diment at the Manchester Museum of Science and Industry.

I’ve kept myself civilian (or at least sort of) with a De Havilland Otter.

Colonial Marines APC & Power Loader from Aliens, by Larry Lars

Larry Lars has been on a bit of an Aliens kick lately.

His Colonial Marines APC is the latest in a long tradition of LEGO creations inspired by this awesome vehicle, but Larry’s version has some excellent turrets and sweet angles.

The Power Loader looks ready to take on the alien queen.

Mrs. Monster takes to the skies

It might not be enough on its own to challenge the massive air superiority of her husband, but Mrs. Monster has built her first airplane.

This jet is based on the Royal Air Force Red Arrows. I love the angled vertical stabilizer.

LEGO tank with full interior by mad_a0

Flickr newcomer mad_a0 recently exploded onto the scene with this awesomely detailed minifig-scale tank.

Very cool, certainly, but what sets this tank apart is that mad_a0 has built a fully detailed interior. Most LEGO tanks are lucky to fit a minifig driver, much less components like a removable engine.
