We all love a good LEGO Gundam or Macross mecha, but LEGO builders everywhere are also creating excellent models of their own designs. Have a look at them here.

Fictional Industrial

The average LEGO mecha we feature here are heavily armed, anthropomorphous robots. In other words, they tend to stand on two legs and go “pew! pew!” As much as I’m a fan of Gundam-inspired mecha, it’s nice to take a break and think about what mecha might really be like in the future — the blue-collar workbots of the space docks and maglev yards.

To that end, Izzo presents his “Sci-Fi Industrial Mecha Competition“.

Here’s one example from Izzo’s own repertoire — a railroad bot:

Okay, this one’s bipedal, but still a great example of a construction mecha:

Although Izzo is only accepting contest entries from builders over the age of 19 in Japan, that doesn’t mean you can’t take his contest as a challenge and build something cool yourself. Even if it’s not for a prize, I for one think the world could use more rail-laying, cargo-hauling, sewer-cleaning, reactor-scrubbing mecha.

To get you started, here’s Izzo’s great list of inspirational links:

Deadly Killbot

Andrew Lee‘s formidable killing machine based on a concept art leaves us screaming… for more that is. An accomplished space and mecha builder, Andrew’s latest work takes on an innovative mech design that’s not often seen among the myriad of bipeds out there.

ZED’s Autobot Ka-50 “Black Shark” Transformer

Constructed for a competition on the Russian-language LEGO fan site DoubleBrick.ru, Brickshelfer ZED‘s Ka-50 “Black Shark” helicopter transforms into a “Night Hunter” Autobot:

Decorated in Ukrainian livery, ZED’s Autobot looks ready to leap into action and protect humanity.

Jas Nagra’s new mecha inspires repeated uses of the F word

Jas Nagra may not be prolific on Flickr yet (though there’s some great stuff in his old Brickshelf gallery), but what he’s got there now is pretty awesome.

His latest mecha has commenters waxing profane. ;-)

Wash’O’bot!!!

I can’t stop laughing, so I’ll just let Tim Goddard tell you all about his new bot himself:

“Wash day blues? Let Wash’O’bot wash, dry and iron your cloak for you!”

Ha! Excellent.

Infected mecha

Toying with the idea of the black fantasy virus infecting a mecha, I altered my Project Bley Mecha to display filaments of the virus infection. The concept of using Brickarms grenades to simulate tumors played out wonderfully.

Mechatronics

Today is a wonderful day for fans of LEGO mecha. I’m going for a triple post due to the flood of excellent designs.

Industrial Grade P-8 Lifter Robot

Firstly Lukas presents this amazing Industrial Grade P-8 Lifter Robot. It’s tiny, it’s incredibly attractive and it has just become my favourite small scale mecha design.

The Troll Crusher

Secondly Aaron Andrews has demonstrated his skill at both mecha and fantasy with The Troll Crusher, a ‘dwarf punk’ creation.

Danboard

Finally Soren Roberts gives a cute overload with Danboard.

I’m all out of gushing words. I just plain love all three.

Black Fantasy wrap up

The Black Fantasy contest has just ended, and there are has been a myriad of entries, including a score of stunningly horrific creatures. The following highlights some of the amazing entries submitted towards the end of the contest.

The Final Horror, by Dene Quest.

Kermit the Destroyer, by Megan Rothrock.

Howl of Lamentations Unending, by Justin Vaughn.

Cyclopean Spawn of Stars, by Mark Stafford.

The Demon of Madness, by Justin Stebbins.

Infinite Sadness, by Chris Edwards.

Soren Roberts builds a very small city and then blows it up

Check out the brick-built laser blast in this lovely little scene from Soren Roberts. The squieu-esque mecha is certainly cool, but look closely — the laser blast is just amazing!

Kwi Chang gets industrial

Mecha builder Kwi Chang puts together one of his pictures from a trip to the port of Chiba with his latest mecha to create a very cool effect.

LEGO Exo-Force theme to end in 2008 [LEGO]

The LEGO Exo-Force theme was received with mixed feelings back in 2005. Nevertheless, many fans have embraced the theme in the intervening years — if for no other reason than that it yielded a plethora of new minifigs and other new parts.

So, it is once again with mixed emotions that I share the news of the end of the LEGO Exo-Force theme at the end of this year. Personally, I think the 2008 Exo-Force sets were some of the best-designed sets of the theme, so it’s disappointing to say goodbye to the theme just as it seems to be coming into its own.
