The adorable deception of Tyler’s Bubble Dragon

LEGO Masters builder, and half of the winning team for the show’s debut season, Tyler Clites presents us with quite the adorable fellow in his Bubble Dragon build. While one wouldn’t typically associate a dragon with such a cuddly demeanor, Tyler has convinced me otherwise with this deceptively simple creation. At first glance, we’re drawn to associate the CGI bubbles in both the foreground and background to the title. However, a closer examination reveals rounded, or bubbled, claws on the feet, hands, teeth, wings, and the cutest rounded belly. It’s putting to use just about every curved slope and rounded plate and tile that one can find in turquoise and orange-yellow!

Behold! An excellent LEGO D&D monster!

Other than its titular dragons, there isn’t a more iconic Dungeons & Dragons monster than the terrifying Beholder. And this version by Tim and Dannii from LEGO Masters Australia is a critical hit! The shaping and coloration are fantastic, and I love the bit of drool dripping out of that hideous mouth. All those teeth make for a menacing countenance the causes my level 10 warforged wizard to quake with fear. I also particularly like the ruins in the background. It shows some elegantly simple work with brown bars, and it sets a great scene without stealing the show.

Could I interest you in some enlightenment?

There’s no denying that these are trying times. If you’re like me, you could probably use a break to search for some inner peace. Dicken Liu (from Season 1 of LEGO MASTERS China) has built a lovely object for contemplation – the brick-built head of a Bodhisattva. The calm visage, carved from pristine white marble LEGO, is enhanced by golden accents. Clever part usage includes sea shells, Unikitty tails, and Ninjago sword tassels. The closer you look, the more this work rewards you.

LEGO Master Chef enters the automat

In case you’re wondering, automats are basically vending machine restaurants. Tons of little windowed boxes hold cold and hot fair available to any customers that drop a few coins in its slots. Well, before inflation and fast food pretty much killed them. Still, I can’t help but be reminded of these eclectic bits of culinary history when looking at this lovely sandwich built by Australian LEGO Master Henry Pinto. White bread with a mysterious orange cheese over some tomatoes and lettuce is exactly what you might find in an automat vending machine. Though white bread can be pretty bland and gummy, Henry’s solid LEGO reproduction is wholly satisfying. Each slice is two studs high with a smooth nougat crust attached to the white interior using modified bricks with studs on the sides. Sloped tiles used in the crust capture the pudgy corners of the bread, contrasting the sharp angles of the greens and the slices of tomato peaking out. Meanwhile, sloped bricks create the distinct cut in the sandwich which I hope runs all the way through the model.

LEGO Sandwich

I will remind you that you shouldn’t eat LEGO food, despite how appetizing builders might make it look. Though, you might actually want to grab a snack before you get lost in more of Henry Pinto’s masterful models.
