Destiny Rules

Call it fate, call it karma, call it luck…whatever name you hang on it, destiny is a force to be reckoned with. And while it can be a scary thing, it can also be beautiful. I mean, just look at First Order LEGO‘s Hand Of Destiny. This monochromatic vision in bluish-grey LEGO may not evoke feelings of giddiness, but it still is a lovely thing to behold.

There are a lot of great textures in play in the base and fingers, but to me the real star of this build is the tree’s foliage. Those are hundreds of 8mm wheel rims. If you look very closely, you can see that they’re attached using various 1×1 clip plates. There has to be some very interesting architectural support hiding under those rims, too.

I’m always struggling to find good uses for all the LEGO wheels that accumulate in my parts bins. Maybe the techniques in play here can help inspire some creations of my own. And if not, that’s got to be the case for some other builder. Destiny demands it!

LEGO Exodus Black from Destiny 2 stands nearly 3 feet tall

It’s that time of year again for SHIPtember — one month to build a spacecraft over one hundred LEGO studs in length (approximately 31.5 inches). I haven’t participated successfully since 2014, when I built UNSC Savannah from Halo: Reach. 2018’s build worked out much better, so I present my LEGO model of Exodus Black, a colony ship from Destiny 2.

A fireteam needs a Guardian to lead the pack

Destiny 2’s equal parts science fiction and fantasy allowed its artists to imagine some unique designs for its exotic gear. One such design is the sidearm Rat King, which has a relief of a pack of rats on the slide and a rat skull surrounding the hammer. Bryce Dempsey replicated this exotic pistol in LEGO, creating its slide and grip texture without sacrificing function.

Bryce’s Rat King features a moving slide, spring-loaded trigger, and removable magazine, all demonstrated in this video.

43-inch LEGO Destiny 2 D.A.R.C.I. knows so very well

Bungie must have had some fascination with sassy robots when creating Destiny 2. Your Ghost companion, the hunter Cayde-6 (voiced by the great Nathan Fillion), and Exodus Black’s AI “Failsafe” always have something witty to say. Even the sniper rifle D.A.R.C.I. has some shade for actions such as quitting multiplayer when your team is losing. The lore for D.A.R.C.I., as well as its interesting, blocky aesthetic and teal tubing inspired my latest LEGO replica.

The build measures over 43 inches long and weighs 9 pounds. It took almost three months to build, but this was due to building every other Saturday, when I would be home from school. For a while, I wanted to build a LEGO prop that utilizes teal elements. As most of the rifle is black, gray, and white, the teal and dark azure details really popped, as does the green scope screen. Despite the LEGO-like look to D.A.R.C.I., its build proved difficult in even spacing of its rectangular details throughout.

Energized by the Light of the Traveler

Some gamers are celebrating the launch of action-adventure first person shooter Destiny 2 with all-nighter gaming sessions. Then there is BrickinNick, celebrating the second entry in the franchise with three LEGO Hunter-class Guardians unleashing their super abilities. Nick captured the iconic futuristic cloaked warriors well, recognizable with just a handful of pieces.

The first of the new Iron Lords wields the LEGO Destiny Young Wolf’s Howl

Canadian builder Nick Della Mora shows his love for Destiny with his life size LEGO replica of the Young Wolf’s Howl, an exotic tier sword first appearing in the Rise of Iron expansion. It would have been difficult to construct the engraved Iron Lords crest on the blade and still have the blade hold together when wielded, but it would also look inaccurate to skip that detail altogether. Nick’s choice to instead focus on the red-orange glow of the crest was a creative idea, and led to a neat light-up effect.

In the video below, Nick shows the light-up crest and the techniques used in the blade to maintain stability.

Forge your legend in Destiny’s Old Russia

Like many Destiny players, I have spent many hours grinding out XP slaying Fallen in Old Russia’s Cosmodrome. Without even reading the title of this build from Nick Della Mora, I knew it was specifically The Divide region of the Cosmodrome. That particular group of buildings are recognizable, as many Dregs and Shanks have been sniped from atop them.

But for me, the highlight of the build is the Fallen Walker. It is not only accurate in its aesthetics; it waddles like the one in game, and the head slides out, exposing and illuminating the weak spot. Watch these functions, and an overview of the whole scene, in the following video.

An ancient instrument of war: LEGO exotic Khvostov rifle from Destiny

Although Destiny at this point is just over two years old, many players feel nostalgic for the first rifle your Guardian acquires in his or her adventure, the Khvostov 7G-02. A cracked reflex sight and custom attachments made this generic AR-15-like rifle special and one that told a story. In a bit of fan service from Destiny’s developers, one can, put simply, backtrack the first mission in a special quest to obtain an exotic version of the Khvostov (designated Khvostov 7G-0X) with wood furnishings and a repaired reflex sight.

I was inspired by this mission as it reminded me of what made me enjoy Destiny in the beginning. This, combined with a desire to build something that looked like a real firearm and to finally construct something life size with wooden components, led to the construction of my LEGO Khvostov 7G-0X. The build measures over 40 inches long, weighs 5.5 pounds, and has some working components including a removable magazine, moving trigger, and sliding charging handle. I also constructed two sights: the repaired reflex sight, and the original cracked reflex sight.

Go forth and conquer

Otto Blees built a follow-up to his LRV3 Javelin with Birth of History, another Guardian jumpship from Destiny. His LEGO rendition of this chunky craft looks fantastic and accurate to the in-game ship, but with a more vibrant color scheme. The subtle angles on the fuselage and detailing inside and outside of the massive thrusters are the standout features to me here.

The spacecraft of Destiny are as much an inspiration to LEGO builders as its its weaponry. Here are two jumpship models that would make the Tower’s shipwright proud.

Jake is back with a follow-up to his Phaeton-class jumpship. His CX-20 Spindle Demon is just as stunning.

Can’t earn Sleeper Simulant in Destiny? Build it with LEGO!

ZaziNombies is well known on YouTube for creating Exotic-tier weapons from the popular video game Destiny. His latest is the Sleeper Simulant, an exotic fusion rifle new to Destiny’s The Taken King expansion. The paneling surrounding the barrel as well as the use of custom chrome LEGO parts makes this replica pop. Destiny’s Phaeton Class v2 jump ship

If you’ve been paying attention to what’s marketable in pulp culture these days, the video game Destiny has pretty popular. It has also become a pretty common excuse: “Sorry, can’t build, playing Destiny”. Jake (Jayfourke) has solved this problem by building Destiny with this fantastic ship:

Even if it wasn’t from a game, the ship design is gorgeous. I love the simple colour stripes, and really great angles that Jake was able to recreate. Though my favorite part, and what impressed me most was those iconic triangular intakes:

This thing looks like it was built for swooshing.
