Creepy crawly or fuzzy & fluffly (yes, that’s possible in LEGO), we love our LEGO animals. Check them out here, and fall in love yourself.

Chip ‘n’ Dale

Brickshelf user m-and-m did a great job of building these classic Disney chipmunks and capturing their characteristic expressions. The stump display stand is a great addition for presentation, and the acorn is a brilliant finishing touch.

Nasty, nasty bugs

Starship Troopers seems to be a movie that divides people (I like it*), but hopefully negative opinions about the film won’t detract from Tim Goddard’s (Rogue Bantha) excellent LEGO rendition of the “bugs”. And if you really hate the movie, take heart from Ian Heath’s “Woah, did Blacktron just take it up a notch?!”.

The birds of New Zealand by Thomas Poulsom (with bonus badger)

One beautiful summer evening in December 2008, I walked down a dirt road in New Zealand and listened to a distinctive hooting in the distance — the nighttime call of the kiwi. Today, I work for a company based in Auckland and look forward to returning to New Zealand again soon.

Thomas Poulsom (DeTomaso77) has been posting antipodean birds for a while, but he’s just added two from New Zealand to his growing collection of living dinosaurs, starting with the iconic kiwi and the weird & wonderful kakapo (an adorably fat, flightless parrot).

Here’s “Kaimi the Kiwi”:

And “Karo the Kakapo”:

We’ve been supporters of Thomas’ LEGO CUUSOO project since the beginning, and I’m glad to see that it now has more than 6,200 supporters, though I’m inclined to agree with LEGO in their official comment that we’d like to see Thomas focus on one particular bird (my favorite is Bobby Robin).

But Thomas doesn’t just build LEGO birds. He recently posted a round and chubby badger named Roger to highlight the plight of this unique animal in Great Britain.

If you’re seeing Thomas’ animal models here for the first time, head on over to his photostream on Flickr for hundreds more LEGO animal photos.

Not for the Xenophobic

Zemata gives us a look at the decidedly otherworldly: a creature from a planet where insects have the mastery. It’s a fantastically created diorama, with vivid colors and an interesting shape. Plus, it lights up.

Shriek of the Fell Beast

This sculpture of the Fell Beast by captainsmog captured the ferocity of this menacing creature from The Lord of the Rings. Having the creature pose on the sharp rock formation gave the model a much more dynamic appearance.

Mutated Cyborg Piranha? YES PLEASE!

Kingmarshy says that his Mechua was betrayed by his brother in battle, cursing him. His flesh now being consumed, transforming him into a living machine. All I have to say is that I would NOT want to be his brother, because Mechua is apparently wandering the oceans looking for vengeance.

King Candy Cy-Bug

Bruce Lowell brings the fun with his most recent build…the King Candy Cy-Bug from Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph. Again Bruce shows that he is a master at creating builds with a tonne of character. But where is Ralph when ya need him?

Aerial Assault in the 18th Century

French fan Théo‘s latest model depicts a terrifying past filled with adventurous biologists, mighty dragons, and a fair bit of Steampunkery.

Llama Llama LEGO Llama

I thought the adorable love llamas we blogged a couple weeks ago looked a bit like alpacas, but who am I to split the hairs of a South American camelid? Still, this lovely llama by Delta (itself inspired by delayice’s pair) has a certain fuzz factor thanks to the studs-out construction that I can appreciate.

Stormbringer

I think it’s rather trite to say that something “doesn’t look like LEGO” — it’s a lazy statement and plays into the non-building public’s perception that “LEGO these days” is “overly specialized” and “doesn’t foster creativity.” Also, we try not to feature the same model twice.

Nonsense, all of it. Just look at this amazing dragon built by aurore&aube.

This new version includes much-improved horns, and arms posed as if the dragon were about to leap into the air.

Chris Maddison gets crabby

Of course, Chris Maddison is certainly holding his own against Bruce Lowell! This aquarium features a delightful crab, as well as realistic details like the water aerator/purifier unit thingy on the tank.
