We love builds with character! Creating characters from LEGO elements, whether traditional System bricks or using elements from Bionicle and Constraction themes, is an amazing way to showcase your building skills. Brining out emotion and personality in bricks is an art!

Gorgeous Gargantuan GODZILLA in all its Glory

This gigantic Godzilla is a masterpiece like no other. Builder IGU gloriously captures the essence of this monster and leaves you in awe. The tail construction features a great use of tyres to give it an organic look and feeling of strength.

I can’t think of anything scarier that has been constructed in LEGO in recent times. The Stegosaurus-like plates are cleverly constructed, giving Godzilla his familiar silhouette. He stands tall and proud, and makes you wonder at just how heavy this guy really is!

The Little Match Girl

This digital build by Bert Van Raemdonck uses many pieces in colors that LEGO doesn’t actually produce, but does anyone even care? This recreation of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Match Girl captures all the emotions of the fairytale, as deep as they are. It reminds us not to take the good in our lives for granted, and also gives us hope even in the most hopeless times.

The build focuses on presentation and composition to carry its message, rather than complicated techniques. The combination of light and shadows in a snowy setting work in harmony with the emotions of the original story.

Santa versus dragon

A while ago, I was involved in a conversation that led to the phrase “Santa Claus fighting a dragon”. Something so ridiculous and insane just has to be built, so I did. I used some of my established techniques and here is the result. There is really not much more to be said about a build like this: what you see is what you get. Merry dungeon Christmas!

LEGO Ideas 21308 Adventure Time [Review]

Unless you’re just tragically unhip or have been living under a rock, on Mars, then you’ll no doubt have heard of the critically acclaimed, Emmy winning, noodly limbed, gender stereotype breaking, cult followed, totally mathematical, pop culture phenomenon that is Adventure Time.

It’s now been 10 years since the original pilot aired, and with almost 250 episodes under its belt (including a new 8-part special Islands coming next month) the show remains as popular as ever, thanks to its groundbreaking style, the diversity of its characters, and massive merchandising empire. And now it is finally a LEGO set, 21308 Adventure Time. Not bad for a cartoon inspired by D&D and videogames!

You better watch out, you better not cry, you better not pout, I’m telling you why...

LEGO Santa Claus is coming to town, and doesn’t he look a treat with his pink glowing cheeks, magnificent fluffy beard and cheery smiling face. Several points of articulation make this brick-built Father Christmas by DOGOD Brick Design quite poseable.

But my absolute favourite part of this rendition of jolly Saint Nick would have to be the compartment within his back, where minifig Santa can enjoy a hot mug of cocoa by his Christmas tree in front of a roaring fire with his cat.

Here “down under” in Middle Zealand Santa generally sports surf shorts, flip-flops and a surfboard. So seeing Christmas with snow, lights, warm fires and ugly sweaters always all seems a little odd when it’s in middle of summer and we’d rather have a BBQ lunch and find a comfy spot under a shady tree with a cooler.

All of that said, there is nothing like seeing the jolly fat man in the fluffy red suit with a stack of presents and a tree with lights to get us in the mood for Christmas. Wherever you are and whatever you are doing for Christmas this year, I hope you are as happy and comfortable as this little scene.

To know your enemy, you must become your enemy

I’m not sure who’s who in this duel by Grant Masters, let alone who is going to win. From the striking poses to the top knots in their hair, these expressionless faceless combatants belong in a Kurosawa film. Superb lighting and novel use of slopes give these graceful figures fighting stances a natural hanging clothing effect. Could this represent a battle between good and evil, the struggle between Yin and Yang, or the clash of East versus West? Who knows…

LEGO Overwatch characters on a macro scale

We’ve featured plenty of Overwatch LEGO here already, from a minifig-scale D.Va and her mech, to life-sized Overwatch weapons. But today we have something in between. Builder Piggy brother has graced us with these rather large builds of six of the game’s heroes. Seven if you count D.Va’s mech separately.

An insane hat trick

This bobble headed Mad Hatter by Julius von Brunk seems to contain both regular LEGO bricks and an element of madness. You might remember one of Julius’ previous works we featured back in September — a menacing set of aces from Alice’s Wonderland. According to the builder, this Hatter figure will be starring in an upcoming stop-motion animation parody. I can’t wait!

Moon of my life, My sun and stars

Justin Chua nails it with this minimalist LEGO depiction of Khal Drogo and Daenerys Targaryen from Game Of Thrones. The characters are immediately recognisable, despite the stripped-back simplicity of the models — from Drogo’s distinctive tattoos and beard, to Daenerys’ dress and hair.

I love the work on Drogo’s hair too — without his long braid (a record of victory in battle) he wouldn’t be able to command the respect of his riders.

This is an interesting scale and style for character building. I’d like to see more of the denizens of Westeros (and Easteros) rendered like this.

Gas! Gas! Gas!

The immediate action drill for suspecting a gas attack is to shout “Gas! Gas! Gas!” and then start putting on your respirator and protective clothing. nobu_tary has a build already prepared for such an occasion with his protective clothing, gas mark and a dark foreboding look. The build uses a clever mix of Technic, constraction and system parts to form this awesome looking character. As examples of this mix, the respirator uses a headlight tile from a Dino theme set, the thigh part belongs to Poe Dameron, and an old-school system modified brick is perfect as the toe of his boots.

A Baltic blizzard blasts from this Bionicle build

A cold front has clearly influenced this build entitled Valtias, The Blizzard Tyrant by Dave Foreman. Although dominated by Bionicle parts, Dave has also used cold, icy parts from Chima and Hero factory to complete his build. The character started as a head using the Frost Beast mask from set 44011 Frost Beast and then borrows some armour and weapons from 8982 Strakk. A lot of frosty imagination has been used to complete this chilling tyrant. I particularly like the explosive blast of jagged shards extruding from his central chest and those sharp trans-blue claws on his hands and feet, that resemble built-in crampons.

Just don’t expect this tyrant to wash his hair – Dave admits that his huge chest has resulted in a rather limited shoulder movement. Despite the limited shoulder movement, Blizzard is still able to deftly hold those axes and is certainly not limited in charisma, as you can see from this ‘Joker-like’ pose.

Classic LEGO nutcracker brings holiday cheer

German builder Robert Heim has recreated the classic king nutcracker in LEGO, complete with gold crown, upturned mustache, and a mouth that opens with a lever on his back. But my favorite detail in Robert’s creation is the trio of pieces lying next to the tall nutcracker — perfect use of a LEGO globe and brown minifig head.
