We love builds with character! Creating characters from LEGO elements, whether traditional System bricks or using elements from Bionicle and Constraction themes, is an amazing way to showcase your building skills. Brining out emotion and personality in bricks is an art!

Get it off your chest

This wordplay-inspired creation by Simply bricking it is both unsettling and funny. While skeletons are spooky and scary in their own right, this one is actually quite cute and cartoony with its round skull and large pelvis made of shells. On the other hand, the colourful pile of blood and internal organs is far from cute.

I love how simple yet imaginative the whole concept of this model is. The use of seemingly random pieces is inspired. My favourite part would have to be the unidentified yellow organ made out of the ice cream pieces, which may be the large intestine or a very deformed pancreas.

The most infamous action hero of all: Duke Nukem

Duke Nukem might hold the gaming industry record for the longest time between announcement and availability, taking a full 12 years to hit store shelves. Although it did eventually come to fruition, it didn’t live up to its expectations generated during the hiatus. Whatever you think of the game, though, LEGO builder Havoc did our action hero justice in translating him from pixels to bricks.

I am the (LEGO) law!

The stern scowl and helmet of Judge Dredd is an instantly recognizable combination, and Grantmasters has captured it well in this flat build inspired by the portraits of Chris McVeigh. This build makes great use of the space with the background behind Dredd simulating the sprawling, dense city in the film. And the use of gold LEGO wings to simulate the pauldron is a master stroke. I am the law!

He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother

There’s no closer BFFs than Grizz, Panda and Ice Bear in Cartoon Network’s show We Bare Bears. They live together, eat together, and even navigate the human world together. They also enjoy all the things that we do like social media, giant burritos and tiger jean jackets – all while traveling together in one “bear stack”. Brandon Griffith has recreated this cuddly column of creatures perfectly in LEGO:

Madventures of these Finnish travel dudes

Madventures is a top-rated travel documentary in Finland and the brainchild of popular Finnish TV host Riku Rantala and compatriot Tuomas ‘Tunna’ Milonoff. Eero Okkonen‘s ability to build characters in LEGO is well established and this time he depicts the intrepid duo armed with their camera and sense of adventure.

I love the poseability of these characters and their resultant chunky, solid stances. Eero has employed some ingenious parts use such as dark tan minifigure arms for Tunna’s moustache, minifigure hands for Riku’s eyebrows and tan skeleton arms for their fingers. The resultant LEGO characters seem as dynamic and unpredictable as their real life counterparts.

Evolution brings us the Ninjabread Man

What happens when a Gingerbread Man can no longer tolerate countless bites from his person? This is what happens when cookie species eventually evolve. Scorched and shaped by Matthew Hockers, he introduces the Ninjabread Man. Straight from the oven, baked to perfection, deadly but still savoury (if you can catch one of them).

Beauty and the Beast LEGO BrickHeadz revealed [News]

Last week we got our first look at LEGO BrickHeadz, the upcoming line of collectible brick-built characters. Today LEGO is unveiling 2 additional characters, the beloved Disney characters Belle and the Beast. This isn’t the first time Beauty and the Beast has come to LEGO, as Belle’s Enchanted Castle was released last year in the Disney Princess line.

Each BrickHeadz character will retail for $9.99 USD, and they will be available for VIP early access beginning Feb. 15, with a wide release March 1, just in time for the March 17 opening of the live-action Beauty and the Beast film. Read the full BrickHeadz press release below the jump.

Frogs, Monkeys and Cthulu, Oh My: We interrogate that builder of the bizarre, Fedde Barendrecht [Interview]

This week we were able to track down Fedde Barendrecht to his Australian hideaway in Brisbane. Fedde, who goes by the handle Karf Oohlu, works from home, uploads another crazy LEGO creation almost daily and dreams of world domination. Somehow lots of monkeys and frogs are involved. Let’s dive into his mind but keep your wits about you. Once he has us in his tentacled embrace he may not let go again.

The Brothers Brick: Hey Fedde! What can you tell us about yourself? How did you get into LEGO and what keeps you there?

Fedde: Hi, I’m an old fart, my name is Fedde Barendrecht, Dutch born, Australian raised, and now living in Brisbane Australia. I blame a certain AFOL, Aaron Andrews (aka Darkspawn)—it’s all his fault. The first time I’d visited his place, I saw all the castle MOCs he was working on. (These days, family life—kids—is burning up most of his spare time, and cost him his Lego room.) It got me interested, so I first got into Bionicle, thinking they seemed restrictive and so would feed the interest but not get out of hand. A few System sets eventually got bought, some more—things got out of hand.

Keep Up! Time is running away!

What would a clock say if a clock could talk? (say that three times fast!). Leonid An brings us a very charming character of time and named him Tony the Talking Clock. His expression is familiar to many of us–an exasperated blue-faced look that says, “I ain’t gonna wait for you if you’re more than a second late, buddy!” I’m still in awe at how Tony is able to stand without falling over with that top-heavy build! I suspect the magic behind that is that time does not stop, and if you’re always in motion, you’re not going to fall.

He might be little but he is no chicken...well actually...

Chicken Little is everyone’s favourite neurotic chicken who runs around telling everyone that the sky is falling and is mocked for his efforts. Well, just as Chinese New Year approaches, Alan Boar has created this adorable LEGO version of Chicken Little as he appears in the animated movie. His cute chicken features, stripey T-shirt and geeky specs are perfect, even though Alan had to compromise on colour and use grey instead of green frames.

Thankfully Alan decided to build Chicken Little with his beak closed. In the movie, Chicken Little has teeth, presumably in case he gets a bit peckish, but it just seems wrong to me.

What is thy bidding, my master?

Kneeling is a sign of reverence, submission and obedience. Darth Vader assumes this pose before the Emperor more than once during the original Star Wars trilogy, and this poignant action helps to emphasize his emotional conflict, between the master that guided him most of his life (but who he eventually destroys), and the offspring that he has known for a much shorter time. In recreating this moment in LEGO, builder SPARKART! takes the unusual approach of using a Vader minifig headpiece atop an entirely brick-built figure. He even offers a glimpse at the parts and techniques necessary to copy this distinctive statuette yourself.

It’s hard work but some droid has to do it

Nobody likes to do chores, but even a starship needs to be swept and dusted to ensure those grey space corridors are dust free for photoshoots. This fun little scene by TBB contributor Jen Spencer shows some Brooma and Waita droids helping out with the chores, albeit with a general lack of enthusiasm for their task. Jen’s little droids are adorable, with their cute pot bellies and Kardishan-esque booties.

The part used for their ‘assets’ is the dark orange 2×2 curved top brick, which is also the seed part in the ongoing ABS Challenge contest. And did you spot the ingeniously subtle use of the huge Airplane wing parts forming the walls and doorway?

The comical posing of the droids really makes this little scene for me; the Waita droid at the end seems to be struggling with his heavy plate of fruit. The poor Brooma droid on the lower floor is having to deal with a messy Cola spillage. I hope he has called for some back-up, ideally droids bearing mops and buckets!
