Iron Mountain Legion Tank

I’ve been talking with some friends lately about building a joint post-apocalyptic diorama. I started thinking about various factions that could do battle in the wastelands, and came up with several ideas. One was the Iron Mountain Legion.

The Iron Mountain Legion is intended to be the remnants or descendants of an elite military unit that was sealed away in a bunker (Iron Mountain) during the war. They emerge to wreak havoc from time to time.

Goofy back-story aside, this is my first completed attempt at building a tank. It turned out rather, oddly, if you ask me. It seems almost cartoony. While that wasn’t what I set out to do, I think it’s interesting. It also successfully includes four-wheel steering, which I’m happy about.

I’m definitely looking for feedback on this one, so let me know what you think.

The toxic waste zombie outbreak begins

Mysterious viruses and radiation exposure aren’t the only ways to start a zombie outbreak. Muffinmanifestation suggests that what we’re pouring into our lakes and streams might have a little something to do with the coming zombie onslaught.

With the outbreak underway, the soldiers who discovered Ground Zero try to make it back to base.

The impending rise of the undead will be televised in living color

A common criticism of ApocaLEGO creations is that they’re all shades of brown or gray — believable colors for many apocalyptic scenarios, but not necessarily for the zombie apocalypse. With that in mind, I’ve added a few more colorful creations to my fleet of zombie-hunting vehicles.

The big red vehicle is an apocafied version of my S&S/TATRA Wildland Ultra XT fire engine, while the light blue car should be familiar to fans of a certain boy wizard.

The requisite back story for the blue car:

A trio of intrepid survivors convert an old Ford Anglia into a zombie defense platform — complete with Browning M2 .50 Caliber machine gun and M134 Minigun requisitioned from an abandoned Army base. The flamethrower is apparently homemade.

Of course, these particular survivors have a few extra tricks up their sleeves. Other survivors say that the color of the fire from their flame thrower "just ain’t right." They can also be heard to exclaim "Incendio Cranium!" as they charge into a horde of zombies.

Like the green and white camper, the Ford Anglia is an example of an apocafied official set, one of the categories you can win prizes in during Zombie Apocafest 2009 this October at BrickCon.

I had so much fun with the little pink Vespa leading the charge that I had to build her a gang of zombie-hunting comrades.

The girls are riding scooters from BrickForge designed by Arealight, with custom weapons from BrickArms (including several new prototypes).

Zombie minifigs infest Brian Colin’s paintings

Artist Brian Colin recently painted a series of small canvases featuring LEGO zombies. Gotta love that Classic Space zombie leading the horde.

Perhaps not the thing to hang in your baby’s nursery, but awesome on so many levels that I wanted to pick up a couple myself. Sadly, I was vetoed by my wife. The good news is that I’ve picked up a couple as prizes for Zombie Apocafest 2009.

During winter, the zombies freeze

Kevin Fedde (Crimson Wolf) knows that things are a bit safer in northern climes during a zombie outbreak.

I really like the contrast between the grey police station and the tan restaurant. The LEGO Universe panel on the top of the building is also a great detail.

Nowhere to run

Sometimes, the words we write for our blog posts can’t do justice to the wonderful LEGO creations we feature. Here’s Kevin (Legorevolution) in his own words:

The NSR (or New Space Reich) lost contact with the battle cruiser Andromeda a little over 2 light years ago. Since the vessel was exploring an uncharted sector of space, whatever they had mapped or come across was vital to our database and to the progression of our colonies. As a trained veteran in both military, technological, and scientific affairs I was natural chosen to find the ship and bring her and the crew home. However no training could have prepared me for the frightening discovery I have just made. The ship is in utter ruins- the crew all dead and seemingly infected with some sort of unknown agent that turns their skin tone green. Scouting out the lower hull of the ship so far has produced various wall murals written in blood. The most disturbing of which I have just found in one of the hangars spelling out ‘RUN’. Why RUN? The quietness is so eerie; all I can hear is myself breathing in my hardsuit. My god, what has happened here…

Dr. X shows us how zombie-apoc is done with these excellent vehicles. They look like contemporary vehicles, but with stuff tacked on. That is good.

This is not the future my mother warned me about – Terminator Salvation minifigs

It’s been a very long time since going to see a movie inspired me to build a bunch of minifigs as soon as I got home. I saw Terminator Salvation on Saturday night, and had to build the heroes and their antagonists.

The human Resistance wouldn’t be the same without a couple of T-600 Terminators to fight.

Announcing Zombie Apocafest 2009 – coming to BrickCon this October [News]

The LEGO convention season is upon us, and BrickCon 2009 is just over four months away — time to start planning your trip and what you’re going to build. Likewise, it’s time to start planning collaborative displays.

With a successful Zombie Apocafest 2008 under our belts, we at The Brothers Brick are pleased to announce Zombie Apocafest 2009.

To celebrate this announcement and as an example of one of our new prize categories, I’ve turned 7639 Camper into a mobile zombie defense platform.

This year, we’re splitting up the prizes into four categories:

Best Original Vehicle (last year’s winner: Andrew Lee’s Truck)
Best Apocafied LEGO Vehicle (new category; example above)
Best Original Building (last year’s winner: Paul Hetherington’s Casa Baron)
Best Apocafied LEGO Building (new category)

There are still many details to iron out, and we’re definitely open to suggestions. What kind of overall theme would you like to build toward? If you were there, what worked last year? What didn’t? Let us know in the comments.
