18+ LEGO Super Mario set 71426 Piranha Plant revealed [News]

LEGO’s Super Mario theme collides with the popular botanical line with the reveal of 71426 Piranha Plant. The venerable enemy from the Mario games adds to an 18+ line-up that already includes Bowser, the Question Mark block, and the console on which Mario made his debut, the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). The Piranha plant is considerably smaller than these, clocking in at 540 pieces and 23cm (9″) tall. Consequently it’s also considerably cheaper! From November 6th, 71426 Piranha Plant will be available for US $59.99 | CAN $79.99 | UK £57.99.

Feel the holiday season approaching with the new 10325 Icons Alpine Lodge set [News]

With just over three months till Christmas, LEGO unveils this year’s addition to the prominent Winter village collection – 10325 Icons Alpine Lodge set. Unlike the last year’s 10308 Holiday Main Street, the new lodge will take you away from the busy uptown, straight to a distant rural resort. The new model comes with 1,517 pieces and five minifigures, and will retail for US $99.99 | CAN $129.99 | UK £89.99.

TBB NEWS AND REVIEWS This was a very exciting week for Star Wars fans as the latest UCS set was announced, The Venator-class Republic Attack Cruiser and it continues the Clone Wars era trend for this year, with the Coruscant Republic gunship announced in August. We also reviewed the only new set for the upcoming Marvel movie, The Marvels. LEGO also revealed 3 new sets for the movie Wish, and I reviewed the new LEGO Ideas set, the Viking Village. LEGO Marvel 76232 The Hoopty [Review]

Nowadays, with box office and sales numbers being such a huge part of how media gets reported on, it can be hard to be a fan of something without having to engage in a little bit of business discussion. For example, Marvel’s 2019 blockbuster Captain Marvel took in more than a billion dollars at the box office. But the follow-up movie is titled simply The Marvels and is bringing Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers together with Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) for an ensemble adventure. Naturally, movie websites and user forums across the internet are littered with opinion pieces as to whether this shift in the franchise is a smart business move or not. But the truth is, not a one of us knows right now how that decision will play out. And we shouldn’t care. All that should matter is “Do we like the movie?” Similarly, when The Marvels sole LEGO tie-in set was officially revealed, there was plenty of opining as to the business decision to sell the set at a cost of more than 20 cents a brick. (10 cents per brick is the usual average.) LEGO Star Wars 75367 UCS Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser officially revealed online

We’ve had quite the string of Ultimate Collector Series LEGO Star Wars sets that have pushed the limits of set size. First, we had both iterations of the UCS Millennium Falcon. That was followed with mega-sized versions of the Star Destroyer and AT-AT. And today, LEGO has officially revealed the next giga-UCS set: 75367 UCS Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser. Clocking in at 5,374 pieces, this massive spaceship from the prequel series is a titanic 12.5″ (32 cm) tall, 21″ (54 cm) wide, and 43″ (109 cm) long. With a plaque commemorating the 20th anniversary of the first Clone Wars TV show (Tartakovsky’s project, not the computer-animated series), the set also includes minifigure versions of Captain Rex and Admiral Yularen. Releasing from LEGO stores and their website on October 4th (October 1st for Insiders), 75367 UCS Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser will retail for US $649.99 | CAN $849.99 | UK £559.99

Trio of LEGO Disney sets revealed from upcoming Wish film [News]

Disney’s next big animated flick is Wish, and three LEGO sets based on the film were revealed today. All three depict buildings in the movie’s Kingdom of Rosas, as well as the protagonist Asha in minidoll form. The fabled LEGO goat also returns! Well, sort of. 43223 Asha in the City of Rosas includes pet goat Valentino. Star – presumably another of the film’s main protagonists – also features in this and the other two sets, 43231 Asha’s Cottage and 43224 King Magnifico’s Castle. All three will be available in a little over a month, from October 1st.

LEGO Ideas 21343 Viking Village – Hearty and sturdy, or a real cold fish? [Review]

LEGO Art 31209 The Amazing Spider-Man breaks the mold [Review]

LEGO Art started out three years ago with four portraits, where the most variation in physical depth was the height of a stud. LEGO 31206 The Rolling Stones broke out of the rectangular frame and added a bit of depth and 31208 The Great Wave took the depth a bit further, but with LEGO 31209 The Amazing Spider-Man, LEGO have boldly gone right out of the frame! The set also combines larger plates and slopes with varied size tiles to replicate the style and shading of a comic book. The LEGO Group announces slowdown in growth for the first half of 2023

According to their most recent press release, the LEGO Group’s revenue for the first half of 2023 is up only 1% over the same period in 2022. Similarly, consumer sales grew by 3% compared to that same period last year. And while a positive number is definitely better than a negative one, this rate of expansion pales in comparison to the stats thrown up over the last three years by TLG (revenue was up 17% for the first half of 2022, for example). However, amid a shrinking toy market, these numbers are outstanding when compared to their peers. And in that hostile environment, TLG managed to further grow its market share over this period.

CEO Niels B Christiansen remains undeterred by the slowdown: “Our strong financial position allows us to invest for the long term, particularly in areas such as digital, sustainability and manufacturing. Overall, our performance is in line with expectations, after three consecutive years of extraordinary growth and we are grateful for our great colleagues who work each day to inspire children through play.” In that vein, work continues on new factory construction in the US and Vietnam, as well as expanding facilities in Mexico, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and China.
