About Tromas

LEGOmaniac for life, TR has never forgotten the joy that playing with LEGO brings. With three young sons it is just further reason to never stop playing. Typically a SPACE! builder, but has been known to dabble in TOWN! as well. Has to yet to try CASTLE! in any meaningful amount. So please feel free to check out his flickr account if you are up for some SPACE!, the occassional TOWN! and very little, if any CASTLE!

Pew Pew

Tim Zarki (spook) has been doing a series of small scale sci-fi firearms. I have to admit that I was mildly disappointed when I discovered that there was not necessarily going to be a big mecha made to carry these…but the more he posts, the more I appreciate them as individual models! The scale is perfect to get a good amount of detail while still maintaining an almost cartoony toy vibe.

I had trouble picking my favourites to post, but please be sure to check out the rest in his SubApoc set…which just so happens to be chock full of other cool stuff too :)

Yoshimitsu

Andrew Lee (onosendai2600) builds one big bad mean looking samurai.

Yoshimitsu

He says it is because every good guy needs a worthy opponent from time to time…well those weren’t his exact words.

Isla Guadalupe, a Keith Goldman Production

…well and Mike Rutherford too ;)

Keith Goldman (Don Quixote 2×4) unfailingly puts out absolutely brilliant large scale dioramas. His latest one was a collaboration between he and Mike Rutherford (Seadog1098again). Keith said that this work was pretty well the brainchild of Mike. In his own words:

“Rutherford was the driving force on this effort and definitely deserves all credit/blame for the overall concept. With limited access to his bricks (weekends) Mike once again found himself in a position to talk more than build, but I think it worked out within our constraints for this particular project.”

I agree 100% Keith…this most definitely worked!!!

No matter what the subject matter, whether it be apes, spaceships, and anything in between, Keith’s ability to portray a story is second to none.

Isla Guadalupe

One of my favourite things about these displays is the propensity to arrange the minifigs into vignettes within the larger overall diorama. There are micro stories to be found within the larger work…and it is always fun to find them all :D

You simply must be sure to check out all the pictures in the photo set.

Rolls Royce Trent 1000 Engine in LEGO

Ed Diment & others at Bright Bricks are apparently responsible for this half scale model of the Rolls Royce engine used in the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The model is comprised of over 152,000 pieces and was designed using actual CAD plans of the real thing. Weighing in at 677 lbs. (307 kg) it is only a fraction of the 1.25 tons for the actual engine.

ITV News also has a video on the build.

Big thanks to Stijn for the heads up.

Giant LEGO Bridge

If you happen to live in Wuppertal, Germany you are lucky enough to get to cross an actual LEGO bridge. Well I suppose it is just a regular bridge painted to look like LEGO by street artist Megx, but it would still be awesome to cross.

Cheers to Will Page for the heads up :D

When ugly becomes pretty.

Shannon Sproule (Shannon Ocean) gave me some sage advice when I was trying to no avail to build a real world starfighter. He told me “to make it look ugly”. I knew exactly what he meant, yet I still find that I have trouble with it…perhaps that is because I am so pretty ;)

But one thing is for sure, Shanno can make ugly look like a Victoria’s Secret model…

JAXA Japanese Lunar starfighter vessel

Lunar recon drone

He has already posted his two entries to the contest, so that means I have full reign to post these. Which is great, because I have been wanting to feature literally every entry on here…I have been sitting on my hands for too long now. So thanks Shanno, I am glad you still feel the need to build these. You keep building them, and I will keep smilin’!!

…and for the record I am not saying that Shannon isn’t pretty too!

Ma.K-tastic

Logan (CaptainInfinity) knows just what puts a smile on my face! He has just updated his previous SAFS Space Type Fireball with some new hardware and cool little base. I haven’t built any Maschinen Krieger stuff for quite some time…but this makes me tweak!

Ma.k Fireball Dio

I love that rocket firing…but the ‘title’ on the base just makes me giggle :D

And you thought you only had to worry about pee...

Ryan H. (L D M) proves there just may be worse things lurking in ball pits. I don’t really need to point out what is awesome with this…well, because…it is all awesome :-D

Ball Pit

I was actually going on to Ryan’s flickr stream to blog his masterpiece Settlers of Catan game that he built for Brickworld, but the ball pit distracted me…so I’ll just kill two birds with one stone.

The Settlers of Catan

I don’t even want to know how much this cost you buddy!! That is a lot of Bricklinkin’!!!

Portal on CUUSOO

I have seen a lot of discussion with respect to CUUSOO, in particular in terms of licenced themes, but generally about feasability of the entire program. Everyone obvioulsy has their own opinions, but personally I think the program is brilliant. We have to keep in mind that this is all in Beta right now and obvioulsy the kinks will be worked out over time. I think the true success of CUUSOO will be through highly thought out projects that are designed with the program in mind…just throwing any given LEGO model on there won’t work in most cases.

Now with all that being said, Team Jigsaw, made up of Five X Five, Brickthing, Lego Junkie, and Arkov have just published a new project based on the hugely popular Portal video game series. I have to be honest, I have never played the games, but I am familiar with the design and aesthetic of it, and one thing is very clear with this project…these guys put a tonne of thought and effort into all aspects of the design!

Well here we go again!

The thing that really stands out with this for me, is that they have really designed it with different types of possible sets in mind. This wouldn’t be restricted to just a simple building set. One of my favourites is the LEGO boardgame version.

Portal Board Game (Cuusoo)

Be sure to check out all the details and ideas. If nothing else, these guys deserve a pat on the back for their planning and development. I think they have set the bar rather high for the design effort of future projects. This had previously been denied by the CUUSOO team, but their perseverance got it reconsidered and approved for voting.

Well done guys!! I really do think that this is a project that could be a huge success!

HMS Neptune C-01

No surprise that Chris (Babalas Shipyards) can build a mean naval ship, but his latest creation is something spectacular.

HMS Neptune forward overview

The angles and finishing details really put this over the top. And considering this was the state of it just a few days ago, makes it all the more impressive :)

One small contest for man...

Tim previously announced the contest that Stijn (Red Spacecat) and I are running over at the Starfighters Group on flickr. Figured since it was the half way point of the contest, I would take the opportunity to spread the word a little more.

This whole contest was a total last minute whim on my part, and it was only when Stijn graciously arranged the prize sponsorship with Morebricks that it became a legitimate endeavour. So far the participation has been outstanding, with 23 entries of all shapes and sizes. I don’t want to give away my favourites quite yet, but be sure to check them all out. Personally I still haven’t built a ship for it, but my man Stijn has totally shown me how it is done with his EADS TWDS ‘LONGBOW’. As usual his presentation is rather fantastic!

EADS TWDS 'LONGBOW'

So all you space-boys and space-gilrs out there…get your bricks out and start getting creative. Lets see if we can’t get 50+ entries. You have until August 1st.

Oh yeah, one last bit of incentive…behold this swanky 1st place trophy!!!!

I like-ah this Leica

H.Y. Leung (Mr.Attacki) appears to be relatively new on flickr, however, a quick Google search reveals that he has been on MOCpages for a while longer. But one thing for sure, these fantastic creations don’t appear to be getting the attention they deserve!!

These are two of my favourites, but be sure to click through the rest as well.
