About Caylin

A life-long LEGO fan, Caylin returned to the hobby as an adult in 2003, after her mother bought her a basic creator tub as a joke. Her mother regrets this. She regularly attends BrickCon in Seattle, Washington, where she goes by the title of Prize Goddess. You can check out her flickr account here.

Everything is just an illusion

These fantastic LEGO optical illusion sculptures come from Marion. Each one is a visual delight. You may recognize a number of these sculptures as mind-benders and thought puzzles, each using fantastic technique to get the shaping just so, and it’s quite effective.

It is I, your Pumpkin King!

I do hope you enjoyed carving your pumpkins this Halloween, as the mecha Pumpkin King is out for tribute. This adorable mechanized squash from LEGO 7 is bright, angry, and makes excellent use of the great little pyramid tile pieces from Nexo Knights. The use of black wings as a swishing cloak is a nice touch; I particularly like the use of Ghost Rider’s head as a scepter.

What’s this? What’s this?! There’s color everywhere!

Are you ready for a trip to Halloween Town? We posted a fantastic minifig-scale scene with Jack Skellington and the Mayor earlier, and have more to show you from The Nightmare Before Christmas. Let’s get this party started!

First up is a great pair of custom minifigs from Yong Hoon Yoon. His minifig scale Jack and Sally are just wonderful; Sally is spot on.

Start your Halloween weekend with Tales from the Crypt

It’s Friday before Halloween, and all good ghouls and ghosts are starting their haunts. Can you hear it now? The creaking iron door, the thunder clashing? Can you see the dusty, dilapidated mansion? I can. It’s time for Tales from the Crypt. Jason Allemann has given us a spooky Halloween version of his pop-up book, with an appropriately spooky gate inside. Step inside, if you dare!

Into the woods with Tom Bombadil

While Tom Bombadil is an overlooked character in the Lord of the Ring films, this LEGO rendition of his home is too good to let slip by without mention. legostrator has given us a colorful woodland scene, with the character in question front and center. The house itself is quite wonderful and full of color.

The combination of finger hinges and minifig hands gives a nice texture to the roof, while the different methods for the siding on the house make it visually interesting. Barrels in the corners are easy to miss! I particularly love the spindly tree to the right of the house. The lady’s dress is lovely, too!

Come warm yourself by the LEGO fire

It’s a bit to early for roasting chestnuts, though I suppose you could go for roasting pumpkin seeds near the fire. Heikki Mattila has given us this glorious little fireplace, complete with a stand for wood and kindling. The fireplace itself is lit with LEDs, which adds a very nice touch to the presentation. I particularly like the spindly tree off to the left, though I daresay it looks like it should be a bit further away from the heat source.

A little LEGO hound

This adorable little Hund comes from SweStar. Hund is full of some fantastic details. I see something new each time I look at it.

I particularly love the LEGO coffe mug on the head, as well as the ball joint feet. It looks very dainty on those tips, and I could imagine a clunky sort of ballet. I like the wheel hubs around the shoulder area, too.

Sweet, delicious LEGO cherry pie

My grandmother was quite the baker. Her farm produced tons of fresh fruit, and fruit pies were a particular specialty. There were never leftovers. Her crust, in particular, was divine. You know what her secret was?

She followed the recipe.

W. Navarre clearly did not follow a recipe, and this pie is good enough to eat. I particularly love the translucent red for the delicious cherry filling. The cross-hatch pie crust on top is perfect, and looks appropriately tender and sinking into the pie, just like it should be. The build feels like it just came fresh from the oven, which can be a tricky thing to convey.

A figure study in gray

Great builds don’t need to be large, or complicated. Sometimes sticking with simple connections, good photography, and good composition can do amazing things. This pensive character comes from Milan Sekiz. Our gray friend has a grey bird, cleverly using robot arms and wings. The whole spindly scene uses mostly axle connections, and the result is quite fascinating – and beautiful.
